Notes: Abstract Of the 18 359 American lobsters (Homarus americanus) tagged and released at three locations in the Bay of Fundy during 1977–1980, 5 375 lobsters (29.3%) were recaptured within 6 yr of release. Mature lobsters (≧95-mm carapace length, CL) on average moved significantly greater distances than immature lobsters (〈95-mm CL). Many (16.4%) of the mature lobsters were recaptured 〉92.6 km (50 nautical miles) from the release sites; the farthest distance moved was 798 km for a male at liberty for 3.5 yr. Examination of the direction of movements indicates some intermixing of lobsters within the Bay of Fundy, and throughout the Gulf of Maine and the adjoining Continental Shelf and slopes. Mature lobsters were recaptured in deeper waters during winter than during summer. The seasonal shallow-deep migration of mature lobsters in the Bay of Fundy is possibly associated with maximizing degree-days for molting, growth, gonadal development, and egg development. In some areas, mature females on average moved farther and seasonally earlier into deeper waters than mature males. Although the seasonal migration resulted in many lobsters returning to the original release area year after year, some lobsters made extensive long-distance movements away from the Bay of Fundy. Temperature-dependent, seasonal deep-shallow migration can explain both the local returns and the long distance migrations of mature lobsters in the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine. To achieve appropriate seasonal temperature regimes, mature lobsters have to move different distances and directions, depending on local topography.

Notes: Abstract Fifty wolframite crystals from San Cristobal (Peru) were analysed with the electron microprobe for Fe, Mn, and W. Detailed studies of several samples reveal complex compositional zoning within individual crystals. One sample contains two crystals with contrasting zoning: one crystal has a high-Fe core and an Fe-poor rim, whereas the other has an Fe-poor core and a high-Fe rim. This suggests that these two crystals formed at different moments and that the wolframite composition did not change monotonically with time. The full range of wolframite compositions measured is from 28 to 97 mol% ferberite (FeWO4). Although a range of 59 mol% was determined for one sample, the average range for all fifty samples is 10 mol%. Samples with average compositions in the range of 84–92 mol% ferberite have relatively small compositional variations, whereas those with average compositions in the range of 61–84 mol% are quite variable. On a vertical longitudinal section of the Main Vein of San Cristobal it appears that the low ferberite values correspond spatially with high tungsten grades. The iron content of the wolframite goes through a minimum across its depositional interval. This may be due to a change in the Fe/Mn ratio of the mineralizing solution with either distance or time.

Notes: Abstract The San Cristobal tungsten-base metal deposit differs from other quartz-wolframite vein deposits in that it has a major period of base metal mineralization consisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Homogenization temperatures of primary and pseudosecondary inclusions were measured in augelite (260–400°C), quartz (230–350°C) and sphalerite (180–220°C). The δ34S values of H2S in solution in equilibrium with the vein minerals range from 1.6 to 9.0 permil increasing through the paragenesis. The relatively heavy $$\delta ^{34} {\text{S}}_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{S}}} $$ values suggest a nonmagmatic source for the sulfur. Evaporitic sulfates are a likely source of heavy sulfur and sedimentary anhydrite is known to occur near the San Cristobal region. In contrast to San Cristobal are three similar quartz-wolframite vein deposits, Pasto Bueno, Panasqueira, and Tungsten Queen. They each have an average δ34S value for sulfides of about 0 permil, suggesting a sulfur of magmatic origin. At San Cristobal an influx of sedimentary sulfur could not only account for the distinctive isotopic signature of the sulfides but also for the presence of the base metal mineralization.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of isoxicam and piroxicam were compared in 12 young adults (〈40 years) and 12 elderly subjects (〉65 years). After a single oral dose of 200 mg isoxicam or 20 mg piroxicam blood samples were taken for 168 h and the plasma drug concentrations determined by HPLC. The elimination half life of piroxicam for the adults was 57.1±16.4 h (mean ± SD; harmonic mean 52.9 h) and for the elderly subjects was 57.8±22.1 h (harmonic mean 52.1 h). The corresponding values after isoxicam were 34.3±13.6 h (harmonic mean 31.6) for the adults and 39.1±22.7 h (harmonic mean 33.5) for the elderly subjects. Similarly no differences were noted in either the AUC0-∞ after piroxicam (adults 154.1±52.2 µg·h/ml, elderly 163.6±99.1 µg·h/ml) and isoxicam (adults 642.7±241.9 µg·h/ml, elderly 787.9±613.1 µg·h/ml) or the apparent oral clearance of piroxicam (adults 2.39±0.80 ml/min, elderly 2.51±0.90 ml/min) and isoxicam (adults 5.84±2.04 ml/min, elderly 5.59±2.12 ml/min). One adult and two elderly subjects exhibited slower elimination of both medicines than the remainder of each group. However determination of the oxidation phenotype using sparteine metabolism showed that this was not a likely determinant of the reduced clearance.

Notes: Summary We have studied the pharmacokinetics of enoxacin in two groups of subjects, 10 young (18–45 years) and 10 elderly adults (〉65 years) after a single oral dose of enoxacin (600 mg). Enoxacin was absorbed rapidly, peak plasma concentrations being reached within two hours in both groups. However, the peak plasma concentration of enoxacin was significantly higher in the elderly than in the young adults. The area under the concentration-time curve extrapolated to infinity was also significantly greater in the elderly compared with the young subjects, and the apparent renal clearance was significantly less in the elderly than in the young adults. Consequently, the urinary elimination of unchanged enoxacin was significantly reduced in the elderly. The apparent volume of distribution in the elderly was significantly less than in the young adults. The elimination half-time of enoxacin was similar in the two groups.

Notes: : A Helley-Smith pressure differential bedload sampler was used to measure bedload transport at consecutive riffle sections of a riffle-pool-riffle sequence on Bambi Creek, a small (154 ha), second-order stream on Chichagof Island, Alaska, during four storms over a 2-year period. Maximum bedload transport rate measured was 4920 kg/h at a streamflow of 2.35 m3/s corresponding to a storm having a 5-year return interval. Transport of larger sediment (〉 8 mm) varied systematically with streamflow at the two sampling locations. At flows up to approximately bankfull, transport of large sediment was greatest at the upstream site; at flows above bankfull, transport of large sediment was greatest at the downstream site. The net import of large sediment to the pool during moderate stormflows and net export of large sediment from the pool during flows above bankfull may be related to a “convergence” or “reversal” of competence between the upstream riffle and subsequent pool at flows approximating bankfull stage. Cross-sections monitored within the study reach indicate that stormflows resulted in net filling of the riffle sections and net scour of the pool; periods of low streamflow resulted in net scour of the riffles and net filling of the pooL

Notes: The Williams–Watts or stretched exponential decay of the form A(t)=exp[−(t/τ)β] and variations of this form are compared to the capture and emission kinetics of the DX center observed by a number of authors. It is found that the time and temperature behavior of the DX center capture and emission characteristics can be reproduced with a thermally activated time constant τ and a linear dependence of β on temperature. Activation energies, lattice vibration frequencies, and models of implicit distributions of activation energies are compared to values previously found in the literature. Consistency is found between parameters for both capture and emission, and implications of this model are discussed.

Notes: Ion implantation is used to modify the local environment of the DX center in Si-doped Al0.27Ga0.73As grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and the variations in DX center properties with subsequent rapid thermal annealing processes are examined using deep level transient spectroscopy. In the as-grown sample, two DX center peaks are found with the same activation energy of 0.46±0.01 eV, but with widely different cross sections. The main DX center peak ME3, which appears at higher temperatures due to its smaller cross section, remains stable throughout the experiments. The second DX center peak ME2 has a much larger cross section, and appears at a lower temperature. The capture properties of this subsidiary DX center peak are markedly altered in the ion-implanted samples. Samples which were subject solely to the rapid thermal annealing processes have stable DX center trap signatures, indicating that arsenic loss during annealing does not significantly influence the DX center characteristics. It is proposed that regions of incomplete ordering and defect complexing in the AlGaAs film give rise to the various subsidiary DX center peaks observed.
