Notes: Summary Polyps of mature colonies of Hydractinia echinata obey the “rule of distal transformation” by regenerating heads but not stolons. However, this rule is not valid for young polyps as these regenerate stolons from proximal cut ends. Also, small cell aggregates and even small fragments excised from full-grown polyps are capable of stolon formation. Aggregates produced from dissociated cells undergo either distal or proximal transformation depending on their size, speed of head regeneration in the donor used for dissociation and the positional derivation of the cells. The latent capability of stolon formation is released under conditions that cause loss of morphogens and depletion of their sources. However, internal regulative processes can also lead to gradual proximal transformation: regenerating segments of polyps sometimes form heads at both ends and the distal pattern is duplicated. Subsequently, all sets of proximal structures, including stolons, are intercalated. In contrast to distal transformation, proximal transformation is a process the velocity of which declines with the age and size of the cell community.

Notes: Abstract Fracture phenomena in rocks are associated with mainly mode I crack growth, sometimes superposed by shear or torsion. The present paper contributes to a fracture mechanics analysis of mode I and mixed mode crack propagation, by presenting reliable fracture toughness data for some rocks which include the effect of induced crack propagation rate, and the influence of effective pressure, and by numerical calculations on fracture propagation in layered rock formations. Empirical relations between fracture toughness,K Ic' and induced crack opening displacement rate, as well as effective pressure, are given. The observedK Ic pressure relation supports a theoretical model which takes into account the existence of microcracks in the crack tip region. Finite element calculations of fracture propagation in layered rock formations demonstrate the important effect of mixed mode crack growth. The numerical approach is particularly applied to single crack growth in hydraulic fracturing and in three point bending tests on layered single edge crack specimens.

Notes: Summary In agreement with the atomic absorption tests, histochemical demonstration of zinc in meningiomas using the dithizone method revealed a higher level of zinc in fibromatous meningiomas than in its meningiotheliomatous variant. Calcified psammoma bodies and vessels exhibited an intensely positive reaction on their surface. The metabolic function of zinc in the synthesis of fibre proteins, as well as in metalloenzymes associated with mineralization, explains these findings.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents A program system is outlined which has the purpose to use field calculations for development and optimizing of electrical devices in the low frequency range. — As all quantities that could influence the behavior of a planned construction are considered and no other empirical data beside the material quantities or-characteristics are required, the calculation provides realistic predictions of all properties of a device. — Such a program must have an easy to handle input and provide an easy availability of all results. The program parts required for this purpose are described below.

Notes: Summary The role of lipoxygenase products was studied in children suffering from chronic diseases of the lung. Leukotrienes C4, D4, E4 and B4 were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a specific radioimmunoassay (RIA) for C4. Elevated levels (up to 40 ng/ml), especially for leukotriene E4, were found in plasma of asthmatic and bronchitic patients (leukotriene C4 concentrations varied between 0.05 and 40 ng/ml, mean 4.9±7.8 ng/ml). In healthy donors the concentrations were below the detection limits of HPLC, leukotriene C4 ranging between 5±4 ng/ml (RIA data). The conversion of leukotriene C4 to D4 and E4 was observed by incubating the samples with synthetic leukotriene C4. The half-life of leukotriene C4 in plasma varied greatly, ranging from 〈12 min to 72 min (mean 39±16 min). Bronchial lavages yielded leukotriene C4 concentrations of 0.2 to 7 ng. Leukotriene E4 was detected in 10 of 41 cases. Conversion of leukotriene C4 did not occur in 50% of all cases, but was regularly observed in putrid lavages. These data suggest that leukotrienes play an important role in allergic and infectious lung diseases.

Notes: Abstract This study describes clinical signs and symptoms in 16 patients with the DiGeorge syndrome (DGS). Diagnosed on the basis of typical facial stigmata, a broad spectrum of severity is seen with respect to congenital heart disease, hypoparathyroidism and immunologic parameters. A simple index of severity is introduced that clearly differentiates complete forms of the syndrome (cDGS) with poor prognosis from partial forms of the syndrome (pDGS). Of 13 pDGS patients, 12 are still living; 8 underwent corrective heart surgery without infectious complications. Moderate to severe mental retardation is seen in all pDGS patients. Due to the lack of thymus function, immunodeficiency is a result of cDGS, whereas immunoregulatory disturbances (hypergammaglobulinaemia, high titres of specific antibody production) prevail in pDGS patients.

Notes: Abstract We present immunological in vitro data on a group of 16 patients with the DiGeorge sequence (DGS). Detailed tests gave evidence that the decrease in number and function of mature T-cells is closely correlated with phenotypic expression and represents a wide immunological spectrum ranging from normal function to severe combined immunodeficiency with B-cells. Careful immunological testing in DGS may help to plan therapeutic procedures (i. e. thymic factor therapy or bone marrow transplantation) may also have prognostic significance and help to gain insight into mechanisms operative in disturbances of T-cell regulation.

Notes: Abstract Several styryl dyes were tested as fast optical probes of membrane action potentials in mammalian heart muscle tissue. After staining, atrial specimens were superfused in physiological salt solution, and fluorescence was excited by an argon ion laser. Excitation spot size on the surface of the preparation was 60 μm in diameter. Dyes RH 160, RH 237, and RH 421 performed excellently as fast fluorescent probes of cardiac membrane potential. Fractional fluorescence changes, ΔF/F, due to the action potential were in the range 2 to 6% at 514.5 nm excitation. Rise times of the action potential onset detected with each of the dyes were less than 0.5 ms, which is as fast or even faster than microelectrode measurements (atria of the rat). Thus membrane potential changes could be monitored with high resolution in both time and space. Emission spectra from heart muscle preparations stained with these dyes were shifted to shorter wavelengths by 70 nm and more as compared to spectra of the dyes in ethanol solution. The fluorescence spectrum of RH 160 at resting potential and the spectrum recorded during the plateau phases of the action potential were measured and showed no difference within the spectral resolution. As can be concluded from measurements of fluorescence changes at different excitation wavelengths, electrochromism cannot be the only mechanism causing the potential response.
