    Notes: Abstract We have observed the time-height variation of the temperature field in the upper troposphere using a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) which consists of the MU radar and a high-power acoustic transmitter. The fast beam steerability of the MU radar has made it possible to measure temperature profiles in a fairly wide height range in the upper troposphere (5–11 km), even under intense wind conditions. Observations were continued for about 32 hr on 24–26 December, 1986 with a time-height resolution of 30 min and 150 m. During the observation period, the tropospheric jet was so intense that the acoustic wavefronts were severely distorted. Using wind velocity profiles observed by the MU radar we have numerically estimated the propagation of acoustic wavefronts, and further determined favorable pointing directions for the MU radar to receive significant backscattering from refractive index fluctuations produced by the acoustic waves. Conventional radiosonde soundings were carried out every 6 hr, which showed a temperature decrease of 4 K/day in the upper troposphere during the observation period. Temperature profiles taken by RASS agree well with the radiosonde results.

    Notes: Summary Alzheimer's neurofibrillary tangles (ANT) in the hippocampal area were studied immunohistochemically using antisera against glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S-100 protein in 48 patients with or without dementia between 52 and 92 years old. In 27 of the 38 brains that developed ANT in the hippocampal area, some ANT were immunostained with these antisera. Flame-shaped or globose-shaped immunostains were occasionally continuous with astroglial cell bodies and processes. They appeared particularly in the entorhinal cortex, subiculum and CAl. The ANT, immunostained with GFAP and S-100 antisera, apparently correspond to slightly eosinophilic tangles in H&E sections and to less argentophilic tangles in silver-impregnated sections in all of the 27 brains. ANT of another 11 brains were consistently negative with these antisera. The GFAP-positive eosinophilic tangles were encountered in the brains of older patients (P〈0.01) and with more abundant formation of ANT (P〈0.001). This alteration was present in all of the 20 brains with more than 100 ANT per section and none of the eight brains with less than 10 ANT. These findings suggest that in the last stages, ANT are penetrated by eosinophilic processes of astrocytes, and appear eosinophilic, and that the presence of GFAP-positive eosinophilic tangles indicates the abundant formation of ANT.

    Notes: Summary Intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies of the thalamus and the substantia nigra, and Marinesco bodies have been studied in four patients with myotonic dystrophy (MyD), eight patients with other neurological diseases (control A), and eight patients without neurological diseases (control B). The percentages of the affected cells were calculated by dividing the number of neurons including intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies of the thalamus and the substantia nigra, and Marinesco bodies, by the total cell count in these respective regions. Statistical analyses were performed with regard to the frequency of these bodies by using Student'st test. There was a significantly higher incidence of intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies of the thalamus (13.2% versus 0.7%,P〈0.001) and the substantia nigra (20.4% versus 2.7%,P〈0.001), and Marinesco bodies (37.4% versus 4.1%,P〈0.001) in patients with MyD than in controls A and B. From our observations, it is suggested that the presence with a high frequency, in combination, of these bodies is not an incidental finding but may have an intimate and important relationship with the pathogenesis of MyD, and may be a conspicuous and diagnostically important feature of MyD.

Experiments were performed in cats to determine whether the head tilt following a unilateral lesion of the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) can be attributed to removal of interstitiospihal fibers which have direct excitatory synaptic connections with ipsilateral neck extensor (biventer cervicis-complexus) and flexor (sternocleidomastoid, SCM) motoneurons. Unilateral INC lesions were made either electrolytically or reversibly by procaine infusion into the INC, and electromyographic activity was recorded bilaterally from biventer (BIV), splenius (SP) and SCM muscles. In both groups of lesions, activity of the ipsilateral SP and BIV was higher than that of the contralateral ones. When procaine was infused into the INC of awake cats, an increase of activity of the ipsilateral SP began before the cats presented the typical head tilt to the opposite side. Bilateral INC lesions caused dorsiflexion of the head. These results indicate that the head tilt resulting from unilateral INC lesions can not be explained by simple removal of the ipsilateral, direct excitatory interstitioneck impulses. 2. When unilateral INC lesions were combined with hemilabyrinthectomies, cats that were given labyrinthectomies on the side opposite to the previous INC lesions showed very severe head tilt, whereas cats that received labyrinthectomies on the same side did not show obvious head tilt. Furthermore, it took a much longer time for the cats of the former group to compensate the head tilt than it took those that had single lesions of the INC or labyrinth. These results suggest that the INC and labyrinth interact in the control of head posture and that the INC also plays a role in vestibular compensation. However, when bilatral INC lesions were combined with hemilabyrinthectomies, cats that had previously received bilateral INC lesions and which had fully compensated the head posture recuperated from vestibular symptoms following hemilabyrinthectomy within one to two weeks. Moreover, bilateral INC lesions that were performed in cats which had previously been given hemilabyrinthectomies and in which vestibular symptoms were well compensated did not produce any recurrence of vestibular symptoms. These results indicate that although the INC plays a role in the control of head posture following hemilabyrinthectomy, it is not needed for coarse vestibular compensation.

    Notes: Summary Fibrinopeptide A (FPA) levels as an indicator of thrombin activity in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma of 25 patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) were measured serially by radioimmunoassay (RIA). FPA levels in CSF were extremely high on days 0–1 (1253±269 ng/ml, mean ± standard error) but decreased rapidly (11.3±3.9 ng/ml on days 2–4, 10.7±5.9 ng/ml on days 5–7, and 6.3±1.5 ng/ml on days 8–14). In the controls the FPA concentration in CSF was 1.2±0.9 ng/ml (mean ± standard deviation). Plasma FPA levels in patients with SAH showed no statistically significant changes with time. The bradykinin (BK) concentration in CSF and plasma in 27 patients with SAH was measured serially by RIA. The cocentrations in CSF were 122.7±22.7 pg/ml (mean ± standard error) on day 0, 38.6±6.1 pg/ml on day 1,22.7±6.3 pg/ml on day 2, and 17.1±3.0 pg/ml or less thereafter. Plasma BK levels in patients with SAH were higher than those in the control group, but there was no statistically significant change over time. From the measurement of FPA it was apparent that the coagulation system in the subarachnoid space is strongly activated in the early stage of SAH. The formation of BK in CSF after SAH is thought to be due to the contact activation of Hageman factor (intrinsic factor) in the subarachnoid space. Trabeculae as collagen bundles in the subarachnoid space were considered to have a possible role in activating the Hageman factor of the coagulation system in SAH.

    Notes: Detailed measurements of polarization-dependent gain-current characteristics have been carried out on (111)- and (100)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs single-quantum-well lasers by using Hakki and Paoli's method. Polarization-dependent gain-current characteristics have been found to strongly depend on the well width and the quantization direction. The saturation of gain with the injection current and the width of the gain spectrum depends on the well width, and they are also affected by the transition between the higher-order subbands. Experimental results of polarization-dependent spontaneous emission are also presented. The simple selection rule and the effective-mass theories do not quantitatively account for the experimental results.

    Notes: Fluorine-18-labeled ortho or para isomers of l-fluorophenylalanine were used in double-label experiments together with l-[3H]phenylalanine for amino acid incorporation into cerebral proteins of Mongolian gerbil brain. It was demonstrated by qualitative regional comparison of the 18F and 3H autoradiographic images that l-p-[18F]fluo-rophenylalanine is incorporated into proteins and exhibits a regional cerebral protein synthesis pattern. To a minor extent, l-p-fluorophenyl[3–14C]alanine and l-o-[18F]fluo-rophenylalanine are hydroxylated in vivo to form labeled tyrosine or tyrosine analogues that are incorporated into cerebral proteins as well. The advantage and validity of the application of l-p-[18F]fluorophenylalanine with positron emission tomography for noninvasive studies of cerebral protein synthesis in humans are evaluated on the basis of an experimental animal approach.

    Notes: Fundamental characteristics of (111) oriented GaAs/AlGaAs graded-index separate-confinement-heterostructure single quantum well lasers have been compared with conventional (100) oriented lasers. In particular, the threshold current density Jth of (111) oriented lasers does not change with the well width Lz in the range of Lz=30–100 A(ring), which corresponds to an ideal extreme. The lowest Jth of 145 A/cm2 together with a high characteristic temperature T0 of 186 K in the threshold-temperature dependence has been achieved for an Lz of 40 A(ring) and a cavity length of 490 μm. The dependence of T0 on Lz showed that T0 is maximum at Lz∼60 A(ring) for both (111) and (100) oriented lasers.
