    Notes: Abstract The blunting of the tip of a crack in a ductile material is analysed under the conditions of plane strain, small-scale yielding, and mixed mode loading of Modes I and II. The material is assumed to be an elastic-perfectly plastic solid with Poisson's ratio being 1/2. The stress and strain fields for a sharp crack under mixed mode loading are first determined by means of elastic-plastic finite element analysis. It is shown that only one elastic sector exists around the crack tip, in contrast with the possibility of existence of two elastic sectors as discussed by Gao. The results obtained for a sharp crack are used as the boundary conditions for the subsequent numerical analysis of crack tip blunting under mixed mode loading, based on slip line theory. The characteristic shapes of the blunted crack tip are obtained for a wide range of Mode I and Mode II combinations, and found to resemble the tip of Japanese sword. Also the stress field around the blunted crack tip is determined.

    Notes: The adsorption of formic acid (HCOOH) on the Si(100)c(4×2), Si(100)(2×1), Si(100)9° vicinal and Si(111)(7×7) surfaces has been studied by means of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. Formic acid is partially dissociated to form the unidentate formate species (HCOO) and H adatoms on these surfaces at both 90 and 300 K. The formate species is bonded to the Si surface with a covalent bond formed between one of its oxygen atoms and the dangling bond of the surface Si atom. A condensed multilayer of molecular formic acid is formed after the Si surface is saturated with the formate species at 90–150 K. The thermal decomposition mechanism has been studied in detail. The decomposition temperatures of the formate species on Si(100) and Si(111) are ∼600 and 550 K, respectively. It appears that the surface steps do not play an important role in the Si–HCOOH interaction. As the formate-covered surface is exposed to atomic hydrogen, methylendiolate (H2COO) is formed on the Si surface.

    Notes: The high-Tc superconductor LaBa2Cu3Oy has been prepared under various conditions, and characterized by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, and dc resistivity measurement. It has been found that samples with excellent superconducting characteristics and also with good structural properties are obtained in a reproducible way if the following three procedures are performed: preheat treatment of La2O3 powders, sintering in N2, and low-temperature annealing in dried O2. Long-time annealing in undried O2 was sometimes found to degrade the grain boundaries and to lead to a lower zero-resistance temperature.

    Notes: High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has been applied to the study of the Si(111)(7×7)–H2O(D2O) system. At 300 K, H2O(D2O) is partially dissociated on the Si(111) surface to form the SiOH(SiOD) and SiH(SiD) species. Angle and primary-electron-energy dependences of the vibrational loss intensities were measured. Relative contributions to the vibrational excitations of the dipole, impact, and resonance mechanisms were estimated. The O–H(O–D) stretching and Si–O–H (Si–O–D) bending vibrations are partly excited by the resonance mechanism in the primary energy region of Ep (approximately-equal-to)2–7 eV. EELS spectra of the Si(111) surface exposed to H2O(D2O) at 300 K and of the same surface heated to ∼700–900 K are presented, and surface reaction mechanisms are discussed.

    Notes: Results of steady-state discharge test of coaxial LaB6 cathodes in a multicusp plasma generator are described. After a single-unit test of a compact, 6.4-mm-diam coaxial LaB6 cathode, a discharge test of two cathodes with one heater power supply was carried out with success. In addition, a new tapered coaxial cathode, which was designed to prevent overheating of LaB6 due to ohmic heating by discharge current, was investigated. During steady-state plasma source operation, a discharge current as high as 180 A was obtained with this tapered cathode.

    Notes: The effect of the lanthanide substitution on the superconductivity in Ba2YCu3O7 and (La,Sr)2CuO4 is investigated. The substitution effect is completely different between the two Cu-oxide systems. In Ba2YCu3O7, the replacement of Y with lanthanides gives negligible change in the transition temperature, whereas a few percent of lanthanide substitution depresses Tc by about 10 K in the (La,Sr)2CuO4 system. The depression of Tc in the latter system depends on the atomic number of lanthanides. From the results of the magnetic susceptibility and the relationship between the lattice parameters and Tc , we conclude that the depression of Tc cannot be ascribed to the magnetic effect nor to the volume effect. Possible mechanisms for the depression of Tc are discussed.

    Notes: Performance characteristics of the magnetic multipole plasma source depend strongly on the structure of the line-cusp magnetic fields and the behavior of the primary electrons. In order to design and improve the plasma source efficiently, we developed a computer code which can simulate primary electron orbits in the three-dimensional magnetic field generated in the source. Using this code, we compared the orbits of the primary electrons in the arc discharges with and without the mode-flip phenomenon. The result indicates that the trapping of the primary electrons in a local magnetic mirror fields causes the mode flip due to the reduction of the effective anode area. Trapping also degrades the spatial uniformity of the source plasma density, due to local arc discharge. The structure of the magnetic field can be optimized so that the primary electrons fill the center region of the source. The 3D simulation of the electron orbits turned out to be effective and useful in designing a multipole source.

    Notes: Samples of LaBa2 Cu3 O7−y have been synthesized, which show a superconducting transition above 90 K. One of the samples shows a superconducting transition with an onset at 93 K and a zero resistivity at 92 K. These temperatures are the highest among those reported so far on this system and even higher than those in YBa2 Cu3 O7−y. The magnetic susceptibility measurement also shows that it has a superconducting transition with onset at around 93 K. To synthesize such good LaBa2 Cu3 O7−y requires two important procedures. First is sintering above 950 °C in N2 gas atmosphere and the second is annealing at 300 °C in dried O2 gas atmosphere.
