Notes: An eosinophil chemotactic factor (ECF) of low molecular weight can be generated and released from human polymorphonuclear neutrophils by the calcium ionophore, phagocytosis of zymosan particles, arachidonic acid, and phospholipase A2. Since the activation of cells by the ionophore and during the phagocytic event leads to phospholipid turnover, with the subsequent generation of arachidonic acid, it is reasonable that phospholipase A2 represents the common link for ECF production. The kinetics of ECF release by phospholipase A2 is similar to the pattern observed with the various stimuli. After a rapid rise in activity a decline occurred at later times of secretion, suggesting a mechanism of inactivation. During subcellular fractionation of cells an ECF-generating component was enriched in the 200,000 g supernatant fraction, which represents the cytosol. Addition of arachidonic acid or phospholipase A2 induced ECF generation. On gel filtration analysis the ECF-generating component revealed a molecular weight of about 80,000 daltons. It is suggested that this component represents a lipoxygenase.

Notes: Summary On 121 consecutive patients with coronary heart disease coronary angiography and quantitative left ventricular angiography was done with the view to aortocoronary bypass surgery. 24 (20%) had mitral regurgitation (MR) by angiographic criteria, 20 of them had MR grade I/IV, four had MR II/IV. In 23 out of 24 patients with MR quantitative left ventriculography revealed localized contraction disorders. MR was clinically diagnosed in 15 out of 24 patients. In eleven patients (48%) contraction abnormalities were localized in the inferior wall, in five cases (22%) in the anterior wall and in seven cases (30%) both in the anterior and posterior wall. Of the latter group patients with MR showed a significantly lower ejection fraction than patients without MR (p〈0,05). Furthermore the MR-group showed larger akinetic areas, preferentially located in the inferior segments 0°–240° and in the anterolateral segments 60°–90°. Three vessel disease was more frequent in this group (43%) than in the group without MR (23%). Patients with inferior wall asynergy frequently showed combined stenosis or occlusion of the right and circumflex coronary artery. In conclusion, MR in coronary heart disease is most often associated with localized contraction disorders of the left ventricle; posterior wall infarctions, multiple vessel disease and large akinetic areas are more frequent. However, the hemodynamic significance of MR in patients with chronic myocardial infarction is usually insignificant.

Notes: Abstract. We consider the parabolic Anderson problem ∂ t u = κΔu + ξ(x)u on ℝ+×ℝ d with initial condition u(0,x) = 1. Here κ 〉 0 is a diffusion constant and ξ is a random homogeneous potential. We concentrate on the two important cases of a Gaussian potential and a shot noise Poisson potential. Under some mild regularity assumptions, we derive the second-order term of the almost sure asymptotics of u(t, 0) as t→∞.

Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Mortality of diabetic patients after myocardial infarction remains high despite recent improvement in their management. This study population-based evaluates the impact of cardiovascular drug therapy on mortality within 28 days and during 5-year follow-up in diabetic compared with non-diabetic patients.¶Methods. Using the MONICA Augsburg register from 1985 to 1992, 2210 inpatients with incident Q-wave myocardial infarction aged 25–74 years were included, of whom 468 had diabetes. Primary end point was mortality within 28 days and over 5 years. General linear model procedures were used for age-adjustment, controlling for sex, and testing significance; hazard risk ratios were calculated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards model procedures.¶Results. During the 5-year follow-up, 598 subjects died (396 diabetic, 202 non-diabetic). The mortality rate within 28 days was 12.6 % in diabetic patients (women 18.0 %, men 9.9 %) and 7.3 % in non-diabetic patients (p = 0.001). Mortality in diabetic patients over 5 years was increased by 64 % (95 % confidence interval 1.39–1.95) compared with non-diabetic patients. This was considerably reduced (p 〈 0.001) in patients treated with thrombolytic drugs (risk ratio: diabetes 0.57, no diabetes 0.65) and with beta blockers (0.62 and 0.64) and antiplatelets (0.76 and 0.74) at hospital discharge. Mortality of diabetic patients treated with these drugs was reduced to that of non-diabetic patients without such treatment (risk ratio 1.01 to 1.27; p 〉 0.1).¶Conclusion/interpretation. Diabetic patients after myocardial infarction are at particularly high risk of dying, but benefit clearly from treatment with thrombolytics, beta blockers and antiplatelets. This study does not, however, allow any inferences to be drawn for treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or the impact of left ventricular function. Notes: Abstract The differential cross section of the deuteron photodisintegration was measured at a protion c.m. angle of 180 degrees and for photon energies between 180 and 730 MeV. The protons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer. The proton energy resolution varied between 30 MeV and 50 MeV FWHM. Since these are the first data at 180 degrees in this energy range a comparison can only be done with data from other laboratories extrapolated to 180 degrees and with theoretical predictions. The agreement with existing calculations is poor. Contributions of dibaryons to the cross section seem not to improve the situation.

Notes: Abstract: We present new results from measurements and simulations of positron spectra, originating from 238U + 181Ta collisions at beam energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The measurements were performed using an improved experimental setup at the double-Orange spectrometer of GSI. Particular emphasis is put on the signature of positrons from Internal-Pair-Conversion (IPC) processes in the measured e+-energy spectra, following the de-excitation of electromagnetic transitions in the moving Ta-like nucleus. It is shown by Monte Carlo simulations that, for the chosen current sweeping procedure used in the present experiments, positron emission from discrete IPC transitions can lead to rather narrow line structures in the measured energy spectra. The measured positron spectra do not show evidence for line structures within the statistical accuracy achieved, although expected from the intensities of the observed γ-transitions ( E γ∼ 1250-1600 keV) and theoretical conversion coefficients. This is due to the reduced detection efficiency for IPC positrons, caused by the limited spatial and momentum acceptance of the spectrometer. A comparison with previous results, in which lines have been observed, is presented and the implications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Double differential cross sectionsd 2 σ/dΩdE were measured for high energetic electrons emitted in heavy ion collisions. Electrons were detected in the energy range of 60 keV-500 keV for various target projectile combinations 66≦Z u =Z t +Z p ≦145 and projectile velocities between 7 % and 10 % of the speed of light. Clear evidence was found that these electrons stem from the united atom formed during the collision. Slope and height of the spectra are discussed with respect to the momentum distribution of strongly bound states (i.e. theL-shell) at momenta far above the mean value. In addition for the systems S, Ni, Br→Pb electrons were detected in coincidence withK x-rays of Pb. By this method the contribution of theK-shell of the combined system to the total spectrum could be separated. Binding energies of theK-shell were estimated by a slope comparison between the coincident and single spectrum. The resulting values are close to the united atom limit.

Notes: Summary The D-(resp. R) configuration of isovaline (=2-ethylalanine) was proved for the peptide antibiotics antiamoebin, Tü 165 (CBS 382.62), stilbellin, samarosporin (=emerimicin IV), suzukacillin B (A), trichotoxin A-40 and A-50. This contradicts the previously reported L-configuration for isovaline in antiamoebin and emerimicin IV. The configuration was determined by GC of the N-trifluoroacetyl-isovaline n-propyl ester on glass capillary columns coated with the chiral stationary phase N-propionyl-L-valine tert.-butylamide polysiloxane (Chirasil Val). The D-configuration of the isovaline from trichotoxin A-40 was also established independently using GC of N-pentafluoro-propionyl-isovaline (+)-3-methyl-2-butyl esters on glass capillary columns coated with OV 17.

Notes: Summary Oximes of chiral ketones can be separated into enantiomers by capillary gas chromatography on the chiral polysiloxanes XE-60-L-valine-(S)- or (R)-α-phenylethylamide. Usually predominantly E-isomers are formed and are better separated than Z-isomers. From time-dependent gas chromatographic measurements it can be concluded that the oximes are configurationally stable and that racemization during oxime formation is negligible. The order of elution of enantiomers depends on the structure of the ketone and is different for aliphatic and alicyclic compounds.
