    Notizen: The photolightening behavior of red hair was investigated. Red hair was found to lighten to a similar extent by irradiation from both ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) light. Under the same irradiating conditions, blond hair was lightened by VIS light but did not lighten by UV light until it was washed after irradiation. These different photolightening behaviors of red and blond hair are supposed to be due to differences in their melanin compositions. The dominant type of melanin in red hair is pheomelanin; while blond hair investigated in the previous work contained both eumelanin and pheomelanin, with mainly eumelanin. Consequently, in this investigation, the photolightening behaviors of red and blond hair were compared to clarify the differences in photosensitivity between the two types of melanin. It has been proven that chemically intact melanin in red hair is considerably more photolabile to UV light than VIS light. Also, it is much more easily decomposed by UV light than melanin granules in blond hair, although they are both similarly decomposed by VIS light. This indicates that pheomelanin is far more sensitive to UV light than eumelanin, while these two types of melanin are similarly sensitive to VIS light. This leads to the following hypothetical photolightening mechanism of red hair: When UV light is irradiated on red hair, the light is absorbed by hair protein and attenuated before it reaches the melanin granules. However, since pheomelanin is highly sensitive to UV light, even the attenuated UV light decomposes the pheomelanin to some extent. As a result, UV light lightens red hair without the need for subsequent washing, in contrast to blond hair, which consists of mainly eumelanin.

    Notizen: New types of focusing lenses for relativistic electron beams (REBs) are proposed, and preliminary experimental results are obtained. The principle of the lenses is as follows: When REBs are injected into the small apertures of cylindrical superconducting lenses, self-magnetic fields of the REBs are perfectly confined in a region between the REBs and the wall of the lenses. The REBs are focused by those compressed fields. The superiority of superconducting lenses was shown using foilless REB diodes which were operated at 0.15-Torr Ne and had high-Tc , cylindrical superconductor anodes made of Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds (axial lengths of 30 and 145 mm and an inner diameter of 20 mm). The focused REBs (0.8 kA, 270 keV, pulse widths of less than 5 ns) had main beam diameters less than 2 mm.

    Notizen: The approximate d bands for a noncollinear γ-FeMn alloy are formulated by using Deegan's method and the formulas of Slater and Koster, and by taking into account the exchange interaction terms to produce the multi-spin-density-wave state. The electronic energies for the noncollinear γ-Fe70Mn30 alloy with the spin directions parallel to [100], [110], and [111] are calculated and the anisotropy energy is determined. It is seen that the state with the spin direction [111] becomes the lowest and the multi-spin-density-wave state is realized in it. For other noncollinear γ-FeMn alloys some discussions are given on the magnetic structure for them. Additionally, the anisotropy energies for noncollinear and collinear γ-FeMn alloys are discussed in detail.

    Notizen: This article describes the outline of a time-resolved x-ray measurement system developed at the Photon Factory to study the pulsed laser annealing of silicon crystals. This system consists of a triple-crystal diffractometer, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and two fast detector electronics using a plastic scintillation counter, and enables us to examine the time-change behavior of nearly intrinsic rocking curves under laser irradiation with a time resolution of about 50 ns. The difference in the recovery from lattice deformation between 1.06-μm laser annealing and 0.53-μm laser annealing is clarified.

    Notizen: X-ray intensity versus energy (I-E) curves were measured in order to obtain the rod profiles. The three-dimensional surface structures of Si(111) 7/8 × 7/8 -Bi and -Ag were analyzed. The adsorption sites with respect to the crystal were derived from the intensity changes along the integral-order rods especially near the Bragg points by utilizing the interference effect between the x rays diffracted from the adsorbed layer and the bulk crystal. The positions of the surface Si atoms were studied by using the interference effect between the x rays diffracted from the adsorbed layer and the surface Si layer.

    Notizen: A simple programmed temperature controller has been developed to grow single crystals from an aqueous solution. Linear temperature versus time ramps of several days or longer have been achieved with this instrument. From this we have been able to obtain large crystals. An analog ramp generator with an electrochemical device, named MEMORIODE, forms the basis of this design.

    Notizen: Thermal conversions of resistivities have been studied for In-alloyed semiconducting (100–106 Ω cm) n-GaAs grown by the liquid-encapsulated Czochralski method. These dislocation-free as-grown crystals are converted into semi-insulating (〉107 Ω cm) crystals by annealing at 950 °C for 2 h followed by a fast cooling. Such semi-insulating crystals can be converted further into crystals with lower resistivities (∼106 Ω cm) by treating them at 470 °C for 100 h. In the analysis of the as-grown samples by the temperature-dependent Hall measurements, four levels have been found with activation energies 0.13, 0.20, 0.42, and 0.50 eV. It has been shown that these resistivity conversions are induced by concentration changes of the deep states other than the midgap donor EL2, some of them being the levels found in this study.

    Notizen: The E' related defect called the 74-Gauss doublet is shown to be produced by reaction of E' with hydrogen and is positively charged like the E'. The doublet is easily annihilated by exposure to ultraviolet light in contrast to the E' which is comparatively stable. The new positive defect identified here appears to be the third paramagnetic "trivalent silicon'' apparently generally responsible for damage and repair of damage to thermal oxides on silicon.

    Notizen: 1 To clarify the effects of doxapram on the baroreflex, we recorded carotid sinus nerve (CSN) activity in isolated and perfused carotid artery bifurcations of rabbits. 2 The CSN activity due to chemoreceptor stimulation was blocked by resection of the nerve branches from the carotid body. After the resection, the CSN activity was correlated to increase of carotid sinus (CS) pressure. 3 Administration of doxapram reduced the CSN activity originating from baroreceptors. The effect of doxapram on baroreceptors was dose dependent and reversible. 4 It is unlikely that doxapram altered CS wall mechanics because CS pressure did not change in the presence of the drug. 5 We conclude that doxapram acts on the cardiovascular system in part by inhibiting the negative feedback loop that originates in CS baroreceptors.
