Notes: Summary Percentage binding of 125I-labelled concanavalin A to erythrocytes in diabetic patients was significantly higher than that in normal subjects (12.2 ±2.8 versus 8.1±1.8%, mean ± SD, p〈 0.001). Insulin-dependent diabetic patients showed significantly higher concanavalin A binding than non-insulin-dependent diabetic subjects (15.0±1.4 versus 11.4±2.5%, p〈0.01). There was a highly significant correlation between percentage binding of 125I-labelled concanavalin A and glycosylated haemoglobin.

Notes: Summary Amino acid transport in the bullfrog small intestine was specifically inhibited by application of Cd2+ to the mucosal fluid. This inhibition was dose-dependent, reversible and competitive in nature. In contrast, Hg2+ inhibited both amino acid transport and sugar transport: the inhibition by Hg2+ was non-graded, irreversible and non-competitive in nature.

Notes: Summary The primary projection areas in the human somatosensory cortex activated by electrical stimulation of the digits of the hand and the ankle were localized by measuring the magnetic field outside the head contralateral to the side of stimulation. Most of the spatial variation in the amplitude of the field component normal to the scalp could be accounted for by representing each source as a single current dipole in a spherical conducting medium with solely concentric variations in electrical conductivity, although the fit of this model to the data showed some statistically significant deviations. Based on the best-fitting parameter values of the model, we found that the projection areas of the thumb, the index finger, the little finger and the ankle were located at successively more medial positions along the primary somatosensory cortex, at an average depth of 2.2 cm from the scalp surface.

Notes: Summary The observed cortical magnetic field evoked by a stimulus presented at various eccentricities in the visual field was interpreted as arising from current dipoles along the longitudinal fissure. The depth of the source increased as the eccentricity was increased, in agreement with the classical retinotopic map.

Notes: Summary Research in the evoked magnetic field reported in the last two years is reviewed. The studies have shown that the magnetic technique may be used 1) to reveal complementary aspects of the current sources common to evoked potential, 2) to identify the organization of the cerebral cortex and subcortical areas of the brain and 3) to measure functional properties of the active neural areas whose locations are identified.

Notes: Summary Isolated pancreatic islets and thin slices of substantia nigra (SN) of the rat were incubated in a medium containing3H-GABA or3H-leucine to test the activity of both tissues in the uptake of those substances. Pancreatic islets showed a low uptake of both3H-GABA and3H-leucine, but SN had a high activity in the uptake of3H-GABA, though not for3H-leucine. This suggests that GABA contained at high levels in the pancreatic islets plays some functional role other than in neurotransmission as in the central nervous system (CNS).

Notes: Summary The effectiveness of a new urease inhibitor, N-(pivaroyl)glycinohydroxamic acid, in the treatment of infected urinary stones was investigated. The hydroxamic acid markedly inhibited the alkalinisation of urine and stone formation when it was administered orally to rats with urinary tract infection caused by Proteus mirabilis; its inhibitory effect was potentiated by concomitant treatment with Cephalexin. This compound may become a useful medicine for the treatment of struvite stones.

Notes: Summary Ultrastructural and cytochemical studies have been made on secretory granules of B-cells (fibroblast-like cells) in the knee-joint synovium. The secretory granules were membrane-bounded spherical or slightly elongated bodies, 150 to 350 nm (average 230 nm) in diameter and had a homogenous matrix with several cores. These granules were found in B-cells of all animal species examined; they were numerous in mice and rats, and few in guinea pigs, rabbits and man. Ultrastructural and cytochemical examinations revealed that the Golgi apparatus was involved in the formation of the secretory granules. Unlike lysosomes, they showed no acid phosphatase activity. The granule matrix was positively stained by Thiéiy's periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazidesilver proteinate technique, and the cores were digested by protease. These findings suggest that the granule matrix contains mucopolysaccharide(s) and/or glycoprotein(s) and the core material is largely proteinaceous in nature.
