Notes: Abstract Nuclear spin polarization in the 4f 146s 2 1 S 0 ground state of175Lu+(I=7/2) ions is achieved by optical pumping with the resonance line (1 S 0-1 P 1,λ=261.5 nm). Nuclear magnetic resonance of the free ions in He buffer gas yields for the magnetic dipole momentμ(175Lu)=2.2240(11)μ n (with diamagnetic correction). This value can be used for a more accurate determination of the magnetic dipole moments of other Lu isotopes from knownA factor ratios. A comparison with nuclear induction measurements in solids results in the chemical shiftsδ(LuB12)=−23(5)·10−4 andδ(LuSb)= −31(5)·10−4.

Notes: Abstract Thermal9Be+ (I=3/2) ions are polarized by direct optical pumping in He buffer gas. Observation of⩼gDF=± 1 transitions yields for the hyperfine splitting frequencyv hfs(9Be+, 1s 2 2s 2 S 1/2)=1250018(5) kHz. The result is discussed with regard to predictions of recent theoretical calculations and of the Fermi-Segré formula for the ground state hfs of the Li isoelectronic sequence.

Notes: Abstract Daunomycin, adriamycin and 5 semisynthetic anthracycline antibiotics inhibited oxygen consumption or ATP production of rat heart mitochondria in vitro. The no-effect levels varied depending on the substrate used and ranged from 1 nmole to 800 nmole per mg mitochondrial protein. Mitochondrial functions were also studied in hearts of rats treated with repeated i.p. injections of the 7 antibiotics. Decrease in oxygen consumption without change in ATP production was observed with adriamycin and NSC-149584. Daunomycin, NSC-164011, NSC-143496 NSC-143114 affected primarily ATP production. The most potent compounds were daunomycin and adriamycin which damaged mitochondrial funciton at cumultive doses of approximately 10mg/kg. ECGs were monitored in groups of equally treated rats. Cardiotoxicity manifested itself by progressive widening of the QRS complex often followed by the development of a S-wave trough. The most toxic compounds also induced intraventricular block, bradycardia and heart failure. The development of the ECG changes showed a good correlation with the impairment of mitochondiral function.

Notes: Summary Semithin and thin serial sections of rat pancreas were investigated by immunocytochemical techniques using antisera against glucagon and endorphin. The immunocytochemical staining methods revealed that in the rat endocrine pancreas endorphin-like immunoreactivity is contained in glucagon (A-) cells. All secretion granules of glucagon cells that could be identified in adjacent thin sections exhibited glucagon as well as endorphin immunoreactivity. Since glucagon cells are devoid of ACTH-like immunoreactivity it is concluded that the biosynthetic pathway of pancreatic endorphin is not the same as in the pituitary.

Notes: Summary Serum digoxin levels were determined in 33 outpatients of a general practice in the countryside, on three occasions at intervals of 8 weeks. All the patients were on long term digoxin treatment, about 2 years on average. About 14 days after the first and the second visits the results of the measurements were sent to the patients, with a comment about their reliability in taking treatment according to the serum digoxin level. At the first visit half of the serum digoxin level were lower than 0.5 ng/ml; the mean serum concentration was 0.52 ng/ml. There was no correlation between serum concentration and age, dose or creatinine level; but there was with replies to the question about regularity of drug intake. The mean serum level at the second and the third visits was 0.88 ng/ml and 0.89 ng/ml, respectively. A correlation was found between the dose and the serum digoxin level. From these results it seems that compliance by the patient plays a major role in producing steady state levels of drugs.

Notes: Summary The plasma and urinary levels of triamterene and two metabolites were measured using a specific method of analysis. Urinary excretion was completed after 48 h, which permitted a rough estimate of its half-life as longer than two hours. The areas under the curve were 672.5±160.3 and 1.311.3±399.1 µg/ml × h after the triameterene 150 mg and 300 mg p.o., respectively and correspondingly 4.2±1.4% and 3.7±0.6% of the dose were excreted as unchanged drug. The principal metabolite of triamterene found was the sulfate conjugate. The area under the curve of this metabolite amounted to 6.672±2.120 and 11.941±5.005 µg/ml × h after the of 150 mg and 300 mg triamterene doses, respectively. The urinary excretion of the metabolite varied between 25.0±4.0% and 17.5±3.5% of the dose after either dose. In healthy subjects an effect on sodium excretion was observed after a dose of 150 mg, whereas the potassium-retaining effect was observed only after the dose of 300 mg.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary It is unknown whether histomorphometric parameters of bone surface remodelling change uniformly throughout the skeleton in metabolic bone disease. In patients without skeletal disease (n=8), in patients with chronic renal failure (n=13) and in patients with malignant tumors (n=11), post mortem bone samples were taken from the core of the 5th lumbar vertebra, from the iliac crest, from the femural head and from the interepicondylar portion of the distal femur. Histomorphometric analysis was carried out in undecalcified sections stained after Masson-Goldner. The dispersion of histomorphometric parameters between the different skeletal sites (cancellous bone) was evaluated by analysis of variance. There existed marked differences in the surface extension of the histomorphometric parameters which are related to bone remodelling, suggesting marked differences in the local remodelling rates (iliac crest 〉 lumbar vertebra 〉 femural head 〉 distal femur). In patients with bone disease all histomorphometric parameters changed uniformly throughout the skeleton with the exception of inactive osteoid. The study shows that in metabolic bone disease local factors do not interfere with remodelling in response to systemic factors. It also provides evidence that bone biopsy samples from iliac crest spongiosa reflect with reasonable accuracy the changes occurring elsewhere in the skeleton, although inactive osteoid may accumulate in the iliac crest out of proportion to its increase in low-turnover sites.
