The Catalytic Conversion of Olefins, III 1 ). Synthesis of cis,cis-I,5-Cyclooctadiene and cis-I,2-DivinylcyclobutaneThe nickel-containing catalyst which will cyclotrimerize butadiene is converted, in the presence of suitable ligands, into one which produces cyclic dimers. Several variations for the synthesis of 1-cis, 5-cis-cyclooctadiene (3) are described. At 80° and normal pressure, 1 : 1 nickel: ligand catalyst (tris-o-biphenylyl-phosphite of) produces 3 at a reaction rate of ≈ 800 g butadiene/g nickel-hour in over 96% yield. With the help the same catalyst cis-1,2-divinylcyclobutane (4) may be obtained in 40% yield, working with a conversion of butadiene 〈85% With too low a concentration fo butadiene the four-membered ring system is rearranged catalytically to the eight-membered ring.

An nickelhaltigen Katalysatoren läßt sich durch Zusatz geeigneter Liganden die Cyclotrimerisation des Butadiens in eine Cyclodimerisation umlenken. Es werden verschiedene Ausführungsformen für die Synthese von cis.cis-Cyclooctadien-(1.5)(COD**);3) beschrieben. Bei einem Molverhältnis Nickel: Ligand (Tris-o-biphenylyl-phosphit) wie 1 : 1 wird bei 80° und Normaldruck bei einer Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit von ca. 800g Butadien/g Nickel-Stde. eine Ausbeute von über 96% 3 erzielt. Mit Hilfe des gleichen Katalysators kann man cis-1.2-Divinylcyclobutan (4) in 40 proz. Ausbeute darstellen, wenn man bei einem Umsatz an Butadien 〈85% arbeitet. Bei zu niedriger Konzentration an Butadien wird der Vierring katalytisch in den Achtring umgelagert.
