Notes: Summary Monoclonal murine antibodies are increasingly used for immunotherapy and in vivo diagnostic procedures such as immunoscintigraphy. The therapeutic or diagnostic reagent however, is a foreign antigen, which may induce host reactivity. This may interfere with the therapeutic or diagnostic reagent in vivo, resulting in a loss of efficacy or the necessity to increase dosages. In addition, there is an important interference to in vitro immunoassays detecting specific antigens utilizing murine monoclonal antibodies. In the present study, sera of patients who had undergone a therapeutic trial using 140 mg of an anti-CD4 antibody, were investigated. Human anti-murine-immunoglobulin-antibodies (HAMA) were detected 2–3 weeks after treatment was started and reached maximal amounts of 0.8 μg/ml after a single and 2 μg/ml after a repeated treatment course. Parallely raised values of TSH were found in sera containing HAMAs of more than 0.3 μg/ml. Elevations of TSH levels up to 13 μU/ml were most pronounced after a repeated trial of the murine antibody and were detectable up to 20 weeks.

Notes: Summary Reported are two methodically different methods for localization of the placenta by means of marking erythrocytes with radioactive isotopes. In 36 cases tracing was carried out with 12 (up to maximal 20) μCi51Cr-human serum albumin by collimated point measure ments. In 19 cases of supected placenta previa one time a conclusive statement could not be made. In 10 cases the suspicion of placenta previa could be dropped in accordance with the clinical course. In 6 cases the suspected placenta previa could be confirmed. In 17 cases the method was helpful in avoiding puncturing of the placenta on amniocentesis. The method appears to be particularly useful for institutions which are confronted with these problems less frequently. For the scintigraphic representation of the placenta113mIndium-chloride was used in a dose of 800 μCi in 7 cases up to the present time. This method presently should be the most conclusive one among methods for localizing the placenta by radiactive isotopes. By obtaining scintigrams out of two planes the size, shape and location of the organ can be determined with regularity and acurately. With increasing experience even conclusions on morphologic details can be drawn.

Notes: Summary Between September 1990 and July 1991, we treated 17 patients with renal-cell carcinoma by radical nephrectomy and two patients with urothelial carcinoma of the kidney pelvis by ureteronephrectomy. Immediately after nephrectomy, perfusion of the kidneys with cold HTK solution was performed and the organs were kept in hypothermia of 8°C. The tumor-free parenchyma of the kidneys was treated 4 h later with shock waves of different energy levels in an experimental shock-wave system (Siemens Company, Erlangen). Light microscopy and examinations by scanning laser microscopy were performed after treatment. High-energy shock waves (HESW) produce significant changes in the tubulary and blood-vessel system of the viable human kidney, depending on the energy applied. Although our model is limited by hypothermia of the explanted kidneys, the effects of shock waves on the organs can be studied. Our model is suitable for testing the effects of different lithotriptors on the human kidney.

Notes: Abstract The effect of different carbon sources on the sugar concentration and composition of theAspergillus niger mycelium has been studied at different days of incubation. No positive correlation could be drawn among dry weight, growth rate, and concentration of sugar and with substrate and sugar composition of mycelium. Glucose was the predominant sugar in all the cases.

Notes: Abstract. The representations of visual hemifields in the extrastriate areas of various species exhibit field discontinuities and islands. We propose that these violations of retinotopy are a developmental consequence of the elongated shape of the respective cortical areas. To substantiate this claim, we investigated a model of activity-driven map formation. In agreement with observations, this model yields maps with field discontinuities if the cortical areas exceed a threshold elongation. Moreove r, within the same model island representations in the periphery and the area centralis can also be understood. A multistability of the solutions in the model gives a very simple explanation for the observed interindividual variability of maps in cats. The model leads to a prediction of the radial dependence of the areal magnification factor near field discontinuities, which could be accessible for a high precision mapping experiment.
