    High-precision refractive index measurements revealing order parameter fluctuations in KMnF3 and NiO (1985)

    Notes: The temperature dependence of the refractive index n of cubic crystals undergoing phase transitions (PT) is measured with an accuracy of the order δn=10−6 at temperatures between 3.5 and 1000 K with a computer-controlled Jamin–Lebedeff interferometer. Microscopic monitoring for in situ sample orientation and single domain work is provided. Results are presented for KMnF3 (antiferrodistortive PT) and NiO (antiferromagnetic PT) and discussed within the framework of a generalized phenomenological indicatrix perturbation theory. It predicts the proportionality between the order parameter autocorrelation function 〈δη2〉 and the refractive index anomaly preceding the PT. Comparison with recent theoretical predictions is performed.

    Notes: Abstract Fifty-one pediatric patients undergoing a first cadaveric kidney transplantation were followed for at least 2 years after grafting. They were divided into two groups: those treated with methylprednisolone plus azathioprine (AZA) and those treated with methylprednisolone plus low-dose cyclosporin A (CyA; median dose 109 mg/m2 per day ≙ 3.4 mg/kg per day after 1 year). The steroid dosage given was significantly lower in the second group. The 4-year graft survival rate was 68% for the AZA group and 78% for the CyA group. Renal function did not differ significantly in the two groups; after 1, 2, and 3 years, the median 24-h creatinine clearance was 79, 69, and 51 ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively, for the AZA group and 78, 63, and 68 ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively, for the CyA group. Linear growth was similar in the two groups. We conclude that in pediatric patients the results of low-dose CyA immunosuppression do not differ significantly from those obtained with AZA in terms of graft survival, renal function, or growth.

Da das fragliche Gebiet zurzeit noch als vollkommenes Neuland anzusehen ist und diese Arbeit wohl mit zu den ersten SpezialUntersuchungen gehört, lie\ sich nicht in allen FÄllen eine erschöpfende ErklÄrung der einzelnen dielektrischen Erscheinungen erreichen. Immerhin hat sich gezeigt, da\ einige grundlegende Erkenntnisse den noch am Anfang der Entwicklung stehenden Kondensatorbau bereits ma\gebend beeinflu\t haben. - Besonderer Wert wurde darauf gelegt, das Verhalten der Isolation unter der dauernden Einwirkung des elektrischen Feldes kennenzulernen, da man bis heute noch nicht in der Lage ist, auf Grund einer kurzzeitigen Prüfung mit verhÄltnismÄ\ig hoher Spannungsbeanspruchung oder auch einer anderen Prüfmethode die betriebsmÄ\ige Eignung eines Kondensators, d. h. seine BewÄhrung im Dauerbetriebe mit Sicherheit zu beurteilen. Der unvoreingenommene Beobachter wird sich der Einsicht nicht verschlie\en können, da\ man hier noch ganz am Anfang des theoretischen Erkennens steht und es ist wohl nicht zu viel behauptet, da\ ebenso wie hier, so auch auf den dielektrisch verwandten Gebieten, noch hingebungsvollste Arbeit geleistet werden mu\, um die Isolierstofftechnik zur Lösung der gro\en Aufgaben zu befÄhigen, die ihrer im Rahmen der stetig fortschreitenden technischen Entwicklung noch harren.

    Notes: Abstract The radial and axial pump power distribution in the line focus of a cone (as simplest example of an axicon) is discussed. It is also shown that four conical surfaces covered with antireflection coatings can make an efficient polarizer for radial and tangential polarization of a light beam. Glass cones can be used as efficient pump optics for laser-pumped lasers. The advantages of the novel pumping scheme are discussed in detail for the cases of dye-laser and x-ray laser pumping.

    Notes: Abstract A compact heterodyne receiver system used in the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) is described. Calibration techniques and methods for eliminating standing wave effects are presented. The J=7–6 rotational transition of carbon monoxide was detected in OMC-1 and in W3 with a beam of 5.5′ HPBW. The peak antenna temperature of OMC-1 is 55 K, with the line center at +8±1 kms−1 and FWHM 6.0±0.3 kms−1. The total line flux in our beam is 7.8×10−13 Wm−2. This relatively high value seems to indicate that OMC-1 might be extended over at least several arcminutes in CO (J=7–6). In W3, the peak antenna temperature is 6±2 K, with line center at −42±2 kms−1 and FWHM ∼9 kms−1. The total line flux is 1.5×10−13 Wm−2. W3 thus emits about 50 L⊙ in CO (J=7–6) alone.

    Notes: Abstract Subpicosecond pulse amplification at the 351 nm line of XeF is reported. The study of the gain dynamics of XeF with subpicosecond (subnanosecond) pulses resulted in 0.2 mJ/cm2 (0.8 mJ/cm2) for the saturation energy density and 0.18 cm−1 (0.21 cm−1) for the small-signal-gain coefficient. In XeF a gain recovery of 78±4% with a 79±18 ps time constant is found.
