Notizen: Abstract Laser nitriding of Armco iron in nitrogen was studied for KrF-excimer-laser irradiation. The influence of the energy density and number of pulses on the nitrogen take-up and the nitride phases formed was investigated using Resonant Nuclear Reaction Analysis (RNRA) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Besides the original a-iron, austeniteγ-Fe(N), martensiteα′-Fe(N),ε-Fe2+χN, andα″-Fe16N2 were identified. The fraction of the e-phase was found to increase with the number of pulses and the energy density. A threshold energy density of 1.8(2) J/cm2 for the laser nitriding process was found.

Notizen: Abstract Sb/Ni multilayers of 200 nm total thickness were ion-beam mixed with 900 keV Xe++ or 600 keV Ar++ ions using fluences up to 1016 ions/cm2. The formation of crystalline intermetallic phases was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). To investigate, on a microscopic scale, the mixing-effects the perturbed angular correlation (PAC) technique was applied using some 1012 implanted radioactive 111In ions. The different phases were identified in the PAC spectra by comparison with those taken for single-phase material of intermetallic Ni/Sb compounds and pure Ni and Sb. After the 111In implantation usually up to 50% of the probes are found with PAC-parameters typical for the single metallic layers. The rest of the probes showed a complex mixture of electric field gradients (EFG). During ion-beam mixing this fraction increased to 100%. In some experiments individual EFGs were resolved indicating the formation of crystalline NiSb and Ni5Sb2 intermetallic phases.

Notizen: Abstract We report on the ion-beam mixing processes of Sb/Ni marker layers and bilayers under the irradiation of ions ranging from He to Pb, at 80 K and at room temperature. The concentration profiles are obtained by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy with 900 keV α-particles. At 80 K, the bilayer mixing rates cannot be reproduced by purely ballistic mixing; the essentially linear scaling of the bilayer mixing rate with the energy F D deposited at the interface points to local spike formation. A transition to global spike formation seems to be visible for the Pb-irradiations. Additional mixing effects at 300 K are due to radiation enhanced diffusion and scale with √F D. The marker mixing rates at 80 K are reproduced by the ballistic mixing approach, but are equally well described by local spike models. High fluence Xe-irradiations of Sb/Ni bilayers lead to intermetallic phases in the interface region as verified by transmission electron microscopy.

Notizen: Abstract Armco iron samples were surface nitrided by irradiating them with pulses of an excimer laser in a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting nitrogen depth profiles measured by Resonant Nuclear Reaction Analysis (RNRA) and the phase formation determined by Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (CEMS) were investigated as functions of energy density and the number of pulses. The nitrogen content of the samples was found to be independent of the number of pulses in a layer of 50 nm from the surface and to increase in depths exceeding 150 nm. The phase composition did not change with the number of pulses. The nitrogen content can be related to an enhanced nitrogen solubility based on high temperatures and high pressures due to the laser-induced plasma above the sample. With increasing pulse energy density, the phase composition changes towards phases with higher nitrogen contents. Nitrogen diffusion seems to be the limiting factor for the nitriding process.

Notizen: Abstract The γ-radiation following single and double neutron capture in isotopically enriched62Ni was studied at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin, using a pair and Compton suppressed germanium detector. Measurements before and after 170 d of breeding were performed. The γ-ray fluxes through63Ni and64Ni are discussed; several new levels and spin-parity assignments were found. On the basis of the known discrete levels and the low-energy neutron resonances, level density parameters were determined within the Constant Temperature Fermi Gas model. The neutron binding energies were measured asB n (63Ni)=6837.92(18) keV andB n (64Ni)=9657.64(24) keV. The63Ni (n, γ) cross section for reactor neutrons was measured to be σ=20 −2 +5 b.

Notizen: Abstract High spin states in the transitional nucleus87Nb up to 14 MeV excitation have been established for the first time via the reactions40Ca(50Cr, 3p)87Nb and58Ni (32S, 3p)87Nb. The87Nbγ-radiations have been identified throughγ-ray spectra taken in coincidence with the evaporation residues detected in the Daresbury recoil separator or with multiple proton emission. Gamma-gamma coincidences, DCO ratios,γ-ray angular distributions and lifetimes have been measured. A total of some 100 transitions have been placed into a level scheme comprising of sixty states. The one-quasiparticle (1qp) bands of either parity and several other band-like structures have been identified, some containing alignedg 9/2 nucleons. Moderately enhancedE2 in-band transitions of 13–48 W.u. as well as several weakE2 yrast transitions connecting bands with different quasiparticle numbers have been found. Similarities with respect to theN=46 isotones83Rb,84Sr,85Y,86Zr and88Mo are discussed.
