Notes: Abstract The electrical and geometric properties of GaAs multilayer structures are measured nondestructively by infrared reflectance spectroscopy (50–5000 cm−1). Using oblique incidence and both s- and p-polarizations of the probing beam, carrier concentration and thickness of the epitactic films as well as the carrier concentration of the GaAs substrate are determined. The main structures in the spectra are due to phonon reststrahlen bands, Fabry-Perot interferences and the zeros of the dielectric function leading to dips in the reflectance (Berreman Mode). The results compare favorably with a depth-resolved secondary ion mass spectrometric (SIMS) sample analysis. The range of applicability of the method is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Our measurement compares the energy dependence of the scattering cross-sections of muonic deuterium and tritium on hydrogen molecules for collisions in the energy range 0.1–45 eV. A time-of-flight method was used to measure the scattering cross-section as a function of the muonic atom beam energy and shows clearly the Ramsauer–Townsend effect. The results are compared with theoretical calculations by using Monte Carlo simulations. The molecular pdµ and ptµ formation creates background processes. We measure the formation rates in solid hydrogen by detecting the 5.5 MeV (pdµ) and 19.8 MeV (ptµ) γ-rays emitted during the subsequent nuclear fusion processes.

Notes: Abstract Strong solid state effects in low energy scattering of pµ atoms in solid hydrogen are reported and analyzed. Such effects have been observed in TRIUMF experiment E742 where muons are stopped in thin frozen (3 K) layers of hydrogen. Emission of low energy pµ atoms from the hydrogen layer into adjacent vacuum was much higher than expected, based on calculations which ignored the solid nature of hydrogen. Monte Carlo simulations, performed using the scattering cross-sections with solid state effects taken into account, show the important role of the coherent elastic Bragg scattering in the diffusion of pµ atoms. For pµ energies lower than the Bragg cut-off limit (∼2 meV) the total scattering cross-section falls by several orders of magnitude, the hydrogen target becomes transparent and the emission of cold pµ atoms takes place.

Notes: Proton chemical shifts for the C-18, C-21, —CO2CH2CH3 and —CO2CH2CH3 protons of epimeric ethyl esters of 20(R,S)-hydroxy-23-norcholanoic acids were measured in deuteriochloroform and pyridine-d5. The observed solvent shifts due to specific OH - pyridine hydrogen-bonded complexes allowed the quantification of the epimeric mixtures by analysis of the pyridine-d5 1H NMR spectra. The main features of the pyridine-induced shifts are rationalized in terms of the preferred conformations for the 20R- and 20S-epimers, which are predicted by molecular mechanics calculations.

Notes: The frequency dependence of the gain factor of stimulated Raman scattering was measured using tunable dye lasers as signal and pump light sources. In CCl4 and C2Cl4 peak gain factors of 1.3 × 10-9 cm/W and 1.7 × 10-9cm/W were obtained for the major Raman lines with a frequency shift of ν0 = 458 cm-1 and 447 cm-1, respectively. From the experimental gain factor a threshold power of 0.2 W was estimated for a liquid-core fiber filled with C2Cl4 (diameter 10 μm and length 1 km).
