Notes: Summary Congenital absence of the gall bladder is an extremely rare embryological aberration with a reported incidence ranging between 0.013 and 0.075%. This report, the first from South Africa, discusses 2 cases of gall bladder agenesis, bringing to 413 the number of cases reported in the literature. In confirming the diagnosis of an agenesis of the gall bladder, it is necessary to exclude the abnormal locations which are intrahepatic, retrohepatic, on the left side, or within the lesser omentum or falciform ligament and retroperitoneal. Patients with gall bladder agenesis are classified into 3 categories: i) Multiple foetal anomaly (12.9%), ii) Asymptomatic (31.6%) and iii) Symptomatic (55.6%). Notwithstanding current diagnostic modalities, this rare condition may still present a dilemma to the abdominal surgeon. Agenesis of the gall bladder is a well-recognised but uncommon congenital abnormality. With the advent of minimal access surgery laparotomy may be avoided as the condition, when suspected, may be confirmed by ERCP and CT scan.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a study of theγ rays from the electron capture decay of 3.63d 100Pd. Singles and coincidence measurements provided an accurate determination ofγ-ray intensities and an improved knowledge of the100Rh level scheme. Experimental evidence supports excitation of levels in100Rh at 86-, 136- and 154 keV, not previously reported from the decay of100Pd.

Notes: Abstract Extensive γ-γ coincidence measurements have been made on γ rays accompanying theβ − decay of214Bi using a conventional GeGe coincidence spectrometer. A total of 33 new γ transitions among levels of214Po have been established. Twenty-three previously reported but unplaced transitions have now been assigned in the level scheme. In addition to confirming 56 previously proposed levels, four new levels are established at 1015.05, 1712.98, 3003.5 and 3160.5 keV. Directional correlation measurements have been made on six weak cascades which have the first excited state in common. Mixing ratios have been deduced for the transitions concerned.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out on jute fibers using a V5+ -cyclohexanone redox initiator system. The effect of the concentration of acid, monomer, and V5+ on graft yield have been studied. In order to obtain optimum conditions of grafting, the effects of temperature, acid, reaction medium, solvent, and some inorganic salts on graft yield have been investigated. The most remarkable features of the investigation include the proposition of a mechanism and derivation of rate expression for the grafting process. More than 100% grafting could be achieved with the present system.

Notes: The kinetics and mechanism of the retarding action of phenol on the V5+-thiourea initiated polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) have been studied within the temperature range of 30-50°C. The effects of retarder (phenol), metal ion (V5+), monomer (MA), sulfuric acid, some organic solvents and inorganic salts on the percentage and rate of polymerization have been studied. The remarkable observation of the present study is the positive intercept obtained from the plot of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. This type of observation is significantly different from previous studies on retarded polymerization. The values of composite rate constants k0kt/kikpkK have been calculated from plots of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. On the basis of experimental findings a reaction mechanism has been suggested, and a suitable rate expression has been proposed and explained.

Notes: The kinetics of the hydrolysis of n-amyl bromide and iso-amyl bromide have been studied in alkaline and neutral media at different temperatures in varying ethanol-water mixtures. The substitution and elimination reactions occur simultaneously in alkaline medium, while in neutral medium only substitution reaction occurs. They have been analysed kinetically and given separate rate constants.

Notes: An investigation on kinetics of aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by peroxodisulfate-thiourea redox system has been carried out in the temperature range of 40° to 50°C. The concentration effect of thiourea, monomer, peroxodisulfate on polymerization rate and percentage of conversion has been studied. The effect of some inorganic salts and different organic solvents on polymerization rate has also been investigated. The isolated polymer has been characterized by IR spectra. A suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed and appropriate rate expressions have been derived and explained in the light of experimental findings.
