Notes: Current filaments formed in the parameter regime of the low-temperature impurity impact ionization breakdown of p-germanium were investigated by measuring tunneling and point contact characteristics of a scanning tunneling microscope tip fixed at certain sample positions under variation of the sample voltage. The results clearly indicate that the tip current is determined by local potential variations which can be interpreted by a model for the filament taking into account the finite electric resistivity of the sample contacts. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a procedure that locally determines the composition (from a given set of available materials) of a segmented or graded thermoelectric generator leg in order to maximize its output power to a matched load. The method is based on a new interpretation of the electrical output relation, which is organized to resemble a differential output power along the device coordinate. The procedure is applied to calculate the segment length and output power of a segmented bismuth-telluride/iron-disilicide based thermoelectric generator leg. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An integrated dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer has been fabricated using a YBa2Cu3O7−x–SrTiO3–YBa2Cu3O7−x multilayer process. The magnetometer consists of a 8.3 mm×8.6 mm pickup coil coupled inductively to a small washer-type SQUID with 9 Ω bicrystal junctions via an integrated 101/2-turn input coil. Using simple direct-coupled read-out electronics with additional positive feedback, a noise level of 9.7 fT/(square root of)Hz at 1 kHz and 53 fT/(square root of)Hz at 1 Hz was measured inside a magnetically shielded room. Due to the low noise level biomagnetic heart and brain signals with high quality and the very weak signals of the peripheral nerve system were recorded. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: All strains of Salmonella enterica investigated were found to carry the Salmonella enterotoxin gene (stn) as determined by PCR and hybridization studies. However, when using CHO-K1 cells for testing the toxicity of the strains, not all strains showed a toxic effect (cell elongation) on the cells or did so only at a low level. The cultivation of Salmonella in contact with epithelial cells (IEC-6) led to an increase in the production of toxin. The stn gene expression was detectable with the help of the RT-PCR after 3 h of incubation. The RNA of the strains was isolated, transcribed into cDNA (with MMLV-reverse transcriptase) and amplified using PCR. The PCR products were separated electrophoretically using a polyacrylamide gel and detected by silver staining.

Notes: Abstract We followed the levels of serum IgA-alpha-1-antitrypsin (IgA-AT) complex in 37 patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) during the first 3 years of the disease. The changes in IgA-AT were correlated with a radiological damage score (DS) of the hands assessed according to Larsen. At the onset of the disease, the IgA-AT serum concentration was significantly higher as compared to the control group (0.72±0.22 U vs 0.29±0.14 U, P〈0.01). The level significantly decreased during the 3-year observation period. The DS was significantly higher after 3 years. However, this difference was due to changes in only 11 patients; in 26 patients the DS was almost unchanged. In the group of 11 patients with radiological progression, the level of IgA-AT either remained high or increased significantly (0.95±0.18 U at the onset, 0.97±0.25 U after 3 years), whereas we observed a decrease in IgA-AT in 26 patients without radiological progression (0.63±0.16 U at the onset of the disease, 0.45±0.10 U after 3 years, P〈0.01). Moreover, a relationship between changes in IgA-AT serum level and radiological progression was shown (r=0.60, P〈0.01). Our studies suggested that the relationship between IgA-AT level and radiological progression of the disease should be considered. We cannot exclude the possibility that the constant high level of IgA-AT may cause worsening in bone erosions.

Notes: Abstract In the present study we investigated the long-term effect of intravenous pulse cyclophosphamide (CY) on lymphocyte surface antigens in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Blood samples derived from 17 lupus erythematosus patients were analysed using two- and three-colour flow cytometry. During the CY therapy, the total number of T lymphocytes (CD3+) was reduced by 31.4%, B lymphocytes (CD19+) by 67.4% and NK cells (CD16+) by 27.4%. Six months after the end of the CY regimen, these values recovered to entry levels. At the onset of the study we observed increased percentages of CD3+ CD25+, CD3+ CD4– CD8–, CD4+ CD29+, CD19+ and CD19+ CD5+ cells. The CY treatment regimen decreased the CD3+ CD25+, CD3+ CD4– CD8–, CD19+ and CD19+ CD5+ cells, but increased the CD3+ CD8+ subpopulation. Taken together, a deficiency of CD8+ T cells associated with CD4+ CD29+ predominance may imply an immune regulatory imbalance leading to abnormal CD4+ cell activation and in consequence to autoimmunity. Depletion of CD19+ cells combined with an enlargement of CD8 cells as a result of CY therapy may reduce the enhanced immune response in SLE patients.

Notes: Abstract Muscle tissue oxygen tension was measured by a polarographic oxygen fine-needle probe, and inorganic phosphate and creatine phosphate spectra were recorded using magnetic resonance spectroscopy in patients with chronic low back pain and in patients with fibromyalgia. Results were compared with healthy controls. The tissue oxygen tension was markedly higher in those with tense muscles than in normal subjects. Magnetic resonance spectra for inorganic phosphate were higher in patients demonstrating muscle contraction, and intracellular pH was shifted in the alkaline direction in cases with increased muscle tension. Results show that hypoxia is not the result of increased muscle tension, as was thought previously, but results from oversupply of oxygen demanded by the muscle, leading to increased capillary perfusion and rising oxygen tension.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Mobility and migration pose increasing risks for the health of travellers. Prevention of such health risks, especially of infectious diseases in general and sexually transmitted infections in particular, is seen as a priority task in Germany. Since the eighties the federal agency for health education (BzgA) conceptualized and prioritized health education on travel-associated health risks and STDs. Prerequisites for successful STD prevention are:〈@Normal.lf〉█*To focus on individual independence and self-determination,〈@Normal.lf〉█*To integrate the messages into a positive valued context (health) to diminish avoidance and denial, █*To implement the messages with adequate tonality, functional information or original presentation,〈@Normal.lf〉█*Adequacy for the target groups, █*To attract a high degree of attention, but to avoid distancing (no emphasis on prostitution, sex etc.), █*To offer personal references, █*To work with positive and encouraging messages, not with fear and threats. The evaluation of the education effects shows that nowadays especially travellers with increased STD risks also show better preventive behaviors. So far condom use increased from year to year, but now this seems to level off. Therefore it is important to continue and – if possible – to intensify prevention measures for travellers. Cooperative strategies with the travel industry will become more important. At the same time the quality of travel-associated health education and information has to be improved.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a test scheme for assessing the biodegradation potential of polymers, starting with aquatic screening systems (aerobic and anaerobic) and continuing to long-term systems. At the end of the scheme the material has to prove its behavior under the relevant disposal conditions. Aerobic screening was performed mainly under aquatic conditions, but also in soil, using BOD-respirometry. Carbon balances were performed to obtain a better evaluation of the biodegradation potential. Under anaerobic conditions, biodegradation in an aquatic medium was followed by measuring CH4 and CO2 production. Polymers not fully degraded in the screening systems were tested in aquarium systems for at least 1 year. Biodegradation was followed by monitoring the DOC released in the water, mass loss, and microbial growth on the samples and in the water as well as via FTIR spectroscopy and SEM pictures. Results are presented for the polymers PHB, PHBV, PCL, Mater-Bi AI05H and ZF03U, and Bioceta. By combining the data from the screening with the aquarium system, a good picture of the degradation behavior of the polymers is obtained.
