    Notes: Recently it has been recognized that the neutral gas in inductively coupled plasma reactors heats up significantly during processing. The resulting gas density variations across the reactor affect reaction rates, radical densities, plasma characteristics, and uniformity within the reactor. A self-consistent model that couples the plasma generation and transport to the gas flow and heating has been developed and used to study CF4 discharges. A Langmuir probe has been used to measure radial profiles of electron density and temperature. The model predictions agree well with the experimental results. As a result of these comparisons along with the poorer performance of the model without the gas–plasma coupling, the importance of gas heating in plasma processing has been verified. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A high precision mirror for measuring the storage ring beam size is under fabrication for the APS diagnostics beamline. The mirror, which will be located at 12.9 meters from the bending magnet source, is required to maintain less than 1.6 microradian slope error. The mirror design consists of a slot in the center in order to reduce incident power from the 300-mA, 7-GeV beam during normal operation. Water channels with fins are machined in the GlidCop mirror body to protect it against extremely high heat loads under accidental beam deviations. The mechanical design of the mirror, and results from a thermal analysis are presented in this paper. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A Raman system is described which is suitable for rapid determination of Raman spectra of silicates and other weak Raman scatterers under simultaneous high-pressure and high- temperature conditions. Samples are pressurized with an argon pressure medium and Sm:YAG pressure standard in an Inconel 718 or rhenium Merrill–Bassett diamond–anvil cell that is externally heated in a vacuum oven equipped with quartz windows on either side. Raman spectra are excited and collected through the front window using ≈160° scattering geometry. A triple spectrometer in conjunction with a holographic notch filter, disperses the Raman scattered radiation onto a liquid-nitrogen-cooled CCD detector. Simultaneously measured Sm:YAG fluorescence spectra are collected through the rear window and routed via an optical fiber to a second multichannel spectrometer system equipped with a diode-array detector. The high sensitivity of the detectors and the simultaneous measurement technique enable detection of and compensation of pressure drifts occurring at high temperature. The performance of the system is demonstrated by measurement of the positions and linewidths of the high-frequency Raman modes of polycrystalline forsterite (α-Mg2SiO4) at temperatures up to 930 K at pressures of ∼8 GPa and up to 842 K at pressures in the range 12–14 GPa.

    Notes: Intravenous infusion of 500 ml. of 10 per cent ethanol per hour for one hour inhibited uterine activity initiated and maintained by an infusion of either prostaglandin E2 or prostaglandin F2α.This study was carried out in seven women with intrauterine death of the fetus in the third trimester of pregnancy and in four women in whom therapeutic termination of pregnancy in the second trimester was planned. The significance of these findings in relation to the physiological role of prostaglandins in parturition is discussed.

    Notes: In 45 women pregnancy was terminated in the first and second trimesters and in 10 labour was induced at term by the intravaginal administration of prosta-glandins E2 and F2α. With prostglandin E2 the average induction-abortion interval in 30 women was 12½ hours, and in the 15 women in whom abortion was induced with prostaglandin F2α the average induction-abortion interval was 14 hours 50 minutes.

    Notes: An unusual giant combined dermatofibroma is reported in a 34-year-old man who presented with skin-coloured swellings on the medial aspect of the left scapula. The plaque was well defined, reddish-brown and 25–30 cm in diameter. It was also tender and indurated. Several similar smaller lesions (satellites) were present around the plaque. Light microscopy of an incisional biopsy from the main lesion showed architectural features of a deep penetrating type of dermatofibroma, with xanthomatous aggregates, myxoid changes and probable myofibroblastic differentiation. Our case represents an extraordinary example of giant combined dermatofibroma with satellitosis. Despite its benign nature, a wide excision is contemplated because of its unsightly appearance and physical discomfort.

    Notes: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films were deposited at high growth rates by increasing the rf power density in a (SiH4+H2) discharge, while powder formation due to gas phase polymerization was controlled by heating the cathode together with the anode. A combination of Raman scattering, infrared absorption, and small angle x-ray scattering experiments was used to study the short-range order and microstructure of films deposited in different (dusty or otherwise) plasma conditions. The results were correlated with initial and light-soaked photoresponse to demonstrate that films with more microstructure and less short-range order were generally poorer.

    Notes: Photon stimulated current measurements have been performed on red mercuric iodide single crystals in order to determine the trap energy, trap density, and capture cross section for different trapping levels that may be present in the platelet-shaped single crystals of red mercuric iodide grown by polymer controlled growth technique in vapor phase. The procedure of analysis of these measurements is outlined in brief. The analysis has shown that these crystals in general possess four trapping levels: two electron trapping levels with energies 0.10 and 0.31 eV and two hole trapping levels with energies 0.15 and 0.59 eV. The analysis has further shown that the total trap density is only of the order of 1013/cm3, indicating the superiority of this growth technique over other techniques. The analysis has also shown that all four trapping levels are of retrapping type. Finally, the possible mechanisms of formation of these trapping levels and the ways in which these trapping levels will influence the detector operation at room temperature are discussed.

    Notes: The mechanism of anomalous photovoltage in Cd0.8Zn0.2Te films is explained on the basis of the formation of junctions at the grain boundaries and the surface band bending. The role of atmospheric oxygen on the surface space charge and, indirectly, on photovoltage is demonstrated. The change of polarity with ambient temperature is explained as is the combined effect of the two models.

    Notes: Photoconductive CdS:Y films prepared by chemical bath technique show photocurrent to dark current ratios of the order of 105. From scanning electron micrographs, a combination of crystalline and noncrystalline growths are inferred. In the presence of Y a maximum transmission of the order of 60% is found. Traps at depths 0.68 and 0.72 eV are found effective.
