Notes: Abstract  This paper deals with the integration of different types of standardised and available fieldbus and sensor/actuator bus systems into control systems and applications. The concept for integration and the first steps of realisation considering the bus systems PROFIBUS, CAN and INTERBUS are presented here. This includes a simple but unified application programming interface (API) on all underlying interfaces including standardised fieldbus systems and other improvements for the adaptation to different fieldbus systems. A main feature of these improvements is that there is no recompilation necessary in case of exchanging field bus systems, making the integration of different fieldbus systems much easier. The remaining work for the system integrator is to modify a few configuration tables which are written in ASCII text and easy to handle. The presented concept is realised using VME bus systems with Motorola CPU board, real time operating system OS-9 and hard- and software modules for the interfaces to PROFIBUS, CAN and INTERBUS.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. The diagnostic accuracy of clinical examination for internal derangement of the knee were evaluated by arthroscopy in 195 patients (200 knees). Radiographs were available and 50 patients had magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical diagnosis was correct in 104 knees (52%), incomplete in 70 (35%) and incorrect in 26 (13%). When there was a single abnormality the diagnosis was correct in 70%, but when more than 3 lesions were discovered the figure was 28%. All individual lesions were diagnosed correctly in more than 90%. The lesions most difficult to diagnose were chondral fractures, partial tears of the anterior cruciate ligament and loose bodies. Knees with acute lesions and those with a single diagnosis were significantly easier to diagnose (p 〈0.01). Age, sex, MRI and the surgeon were not significant.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. A woman, 29 years of age, sustained a below knee amputation following injury and was left with a stump 5.5 cm long. Good soft tissue cover was obtained with a myocutaneous flap using the gastrocnemius muscle and heel pad flap from the injured leg. The stump was then lengthened by 7 cm, to 12.5 cm, using the Ilizarov distraction technique. The patient was able to bear weight on the end of the fixator during the 8 months it was in position. The gap filled with bone and there were no complications. She recovered good function.

Notes: Spent cherry brine is an acidic byproduct of maraschino cherry processing and typically consists of variable amounts of glucose and fructose of up to 11% fermentable solids, 0.5–1.5% CaCl2, up to 0.4% sulfur dioxide, sorbitol, and lesser amounts of other cherry constituents. Disposal of brine represents a significant cost to processors because of its high biological oxygen demand. As an alternative, brine was tested as a substrate for ethanol production. Initially, the toxic level of sulfur dioxide was reduced by raising brine pH to 8.0 to precipitate calcium sulfite. Because alkalinization was subsequently found to result in a 10-fold reduction in phosphorous, brines were titrated with phosphoric acid to pH 6.0 prior to inoculation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. All strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae tested were able to ferment all lots of Ca(OH)2-treated and phosphorous-enriched brines efficiently. One lot of brine containing 10% (w/v) fermentable sugar yielded 4.7% (w/v) ethanol in 4 days.

Notes: Abstract In order to remove the radiotoxic nuclides, Cs+ and I−, from low-level liquid wastes, the adsorption characteristics have been studied using a mixed adsorbent of chabazite zeolite and activated carbon. The equilibrium data of each nuclide were well correlated with the DA equation in the wide range of equilibrium concentrations. The SEM-EDAX analysis provided precise understanding of the adsorption mechanism of each nuclide. A surface diffusion model was applied to estimate the intraparticle mass transfer and provided prediction results acceptable for practical implementation in the liquid waste treatment.

Notes: Osseous defects and fractures may require supplimentation to support and promote healing. Bioglass® (BG) may be a useful therapeutic for these conditions. Therefore, we executed a study to determine whether particulate BG could promote healing of 20-mm unilateral ostectomies in the radius of rabbits. Ostectomies were either treated with BG or remained untreated in the control (CTL) group. At 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment, ostectomies were assessed histomorphometrically and biomechanically. New bone formation was more intense contiguous to the host bone for both BG and CTL than centrally, yet BG animals displayed active mineralization throughout the ostectomy. The amount of bone within BG-filled defects was greater than CTLs at 4 weeks, whereas, at 8 weeks there was no difference. Biomechanically, the BG-treated limbs required more torque to break than did CTL limbs at 4 weeks; however differences were not significantly different. By 8 weeks, the BG-treated and CTLs, had comparable strength. Bioglass® may be a useful therapy to produce the early phase of osseous repair. However, improvements in handling properties of the particles will be needed to enhance efficacy. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
