Description / Table of Contents: Summary Recently, Zenner et al. implanted the first totally implantable electronic hearing devices in patients with SNHL (HNO 46 [1998] 844–852). In the present report, technical and audiological features of the implant TICA are published. The development of the piezoelectric transducer and the microphone for implantation in the posterior wall of the auditory canal as components for the present fully implantable hearing system has already been described (HNO 45, 1997, 792–880). Here we report about our experience with the electronic main module that completes the TICA LZ 3001 system. This module is suited for implantation in the mastoid bone and contains the signal-processing electronics and an integrated battery that can be recharged transcutaneously with a portable charger. The recharging time is around 2 h for an implant operating time of 50h. The microphone and transducer connectors allow for easy replacement of the main module when the battery lifetime is reached. This lifetime is around 3–5 years. A small wireless remote control allows volume adjustment, contains an on/off switch, and permits selection of four different individual hearing programs. The basic audiological features are provided by a flexible, digitally programmable 3-channel-AGC-system with a peak clipping function. The total bandwidth is around 10 kHz. To our knowledge this is the first fully implantable hearing system that has been in implanted in humans.

Notes: Abstract c-myc was discovered as the cellular homologue of the transduced oncogene of several avian retroviruses. The gene encodes a transcription factor, which forms a heteromeric protein complex with a partner protein termed Max. In mammalian cells, Myc is a central regulator of cell proliferation and links external signals to the cell cycle machinery. Myc also induces cells to undergo apoptosis, unless specific signals provided either by cytokines or by oncogenes block the apoptotic pathway. Recent progress sheds light both on the factors regulating the function and expression of Myc and on the downstream targets in the cell cycle. Together, these findings suggest the existence of a novel signal transduction pathway regulating both apoptosis and proliferation.

Notes: Abstract  Using RT-PCR, western blot and enzyme and fluorescence immunocytochemical techniques, the three isoforms of neurofilament proteins (NFPs), namely NF-L (NFP-68 kDa), NF-M (NFP-160 kDa) and NF-H (NFP-200 kDa) were found in Sertoli and Leydig cells of human testes. RT-PCR showed specific for the three NFP fragments in testicular tissue, in isolated seminiferous tubules and in isolated Leydig cells. In protein preparations from the same testicular components, western blot analysis detected bands with molecular weights characteristic for NF-H, NF-M and NF-L. Application of immunofluorescence and immunoenzyme methods on cryostat and paraffin sections resulted in differences in the staining pattern in Sertoli cells and Leydig cells. In these cells, the NFPs showed predominantly a perinuclear location from which bundles emerge that were directed towards the basal, apical and lateral extensions of the Sertoli cells as well as the periphery of Leydig cells. NF-H coexists with vimentin-type filaments as seen by dual staining and staining of conseccutive serial sections of material embedded in paraffin. In Sertoli cells, vimentin and NF-H showed distinct dynamic changes depending on the stage of spermatogenesis and some structural variations of seminiferous tubules. Although in some tubules both vimentin and NF-H immunoreactivity was present at high levels, in the Sertoli cells from most individuals an inverse relationship in the staining intensity of vimentin and NF-H was observed. The strongest NF-H immunoreactivity was detected in Sertoli cells associated with stage 3 spermatids, whereas vimentin immunoreactivity was most abundant in association with stage 5 spermatids. The leydig cells did not show functional changes of the NFP immunoreactivity. The results obtained provide new evidence for the heterogeneous phenotype of human Sertoli cells and raise the question of their exact nature and origin.

Notes: Abstract 11B and 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy of three borophosphates was used to monitor their phase composition via the isotropic chemical shifts. CaBPO5 and BPO4 represent nearly pure samples, SrBPO5 contains β-Sr2P2O7 as well as BPO4 as impurities. The anisotropic chemical shift data provide additional information on the geometry and connectivity of the BO4 and PO4 building units.

Notes: Abstract To evaluate the role of inherited thrombophilia in the development of central venous line (CVL)-related thrombosis, the following parameters were determined in 77 pediatric-oncologic patients with CVL: activated protein C (APC)-ratio, factor V (FV) G1691A and prothrombin G20210A mutation, protein C, protein S, antithrombin, coagulation factor XII, lipoprotein (a) and homocysteine. An inherited prothrombotic risk factor was found in 17 patients (23%). Four out of 14 patients with a single defect (hyperlipoproteinemia, heterozygous FV G1691A and prothrombin G20210A mutation, protein C deficiency type I) and all three patients with combined defects (heterozygous FV G1691A mutation combined with heterozygous prothrombin G20210A variant, protein S deficiency or hyperlipoproteinemia) suffered from CVL-related thrombosis. In 11 out of 77 patients (14%) a CVL-related thrombosis was detected. In 2 children thrombosis occurred a few days after asparaginase therapy and in another three thrombosis was associated with CVL-related septicemia caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. After removal of CVL, thrombosis was detected in 5 children, in 2 without clinical symptoms but in the presence of inherited prothrombotic risk factors. Conclusion The present study demonstrates the clinical importance of CVL in combination with inherited thrombophilia in the development of thrombosis in pediatric-oncologic patients. Before or shortly after insertion of CVL, patients should be tested for the presence of factor V G1691A mutation, prothrombin G20210A variant and increased lipoprotein (a) values.

Notes: Abstract It is now well known that many marine organisms use low-molecular volatile substances as signals, in order to coordinate activities between different individuals. The study of such pheromones requires the isolation and enrichment of the secretions from undisturbed living cells or organisms over extended periods of time. The Grob-Hersch extraction device, which we describe here, avoids adverse factors for the biological materials such as strong water currents, rising gas bubbles or chemical solvents. Furthermore, the formation of sea-water spray is greatly reduced. The application of this technique for the isolation of pheromones of marine algae and animals is described.

Notes: Summary Bajo de la Alumbrera forms an example of a series of world class copper-gold deposits that are hosted by potassic igneous rocks. The Bajo de la Alumbrera porphyry copper-gold deposit is situated in the Catamarca Province of Northwest-Argentina and belongs to the ten largest copper mines in the world; it is also one of the largest gold producers in South America. The deposit is characterized by an alteration-zoning pattern with a central potassic core which grades outwards into a zone with propylitic alteration and an intermediate annular phyllic overprint. Porphyry copper-gold mineralization consists mainly of disseminated and/or vein-related chalcopyrite within the central potassic alteration zone which also hosts the highest gold grades (up to 2 ppm). Mineralization is genetically related to co-magmatic hypabyssal dacite domes with shoshonitic compositions which intruded the high-K calc-alkaline andesitic to latitic lava flows, breccia tuffs, and agglomerates of the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro Formation. The Farallon Negro Formation is interpreted as the remnants of a major stratovolcano some 16 km in diameter, with volcanism being controlled by sinistral pull-apart tectonics along a major NW-trending lineament. The dacitic rocks associated with the porphyry copper-gold mineralization have porphyritic textures with phenocrysts of alkali feldspar, plagioclase, biotite, and very rare amphibole in a fine-grained feldspathic groundmass. The abundance of hydrous minerals, such as biotite phenocrysts and apatite microphenocrysts, is consistent with the volatile-rich nature of the melts. The rocks underwent moderate degrees of clinopyroxene-biotite-âpatite-titanite fractionation. Several samples are overprinted by weak to moderate potassic or carbonate-sericite alteration. Geochemically, the dacites are characterized by high LILE (e.g. K20 up to 7.16 wt%, and Rb, Sr, and Ba up to 145 ppm, 445 ppm, and 610 ppm, respectively), moderate LREE (La 〈 73 ppm and Ce 〈 140 ppm), and low HFSE (TiO2 〈 0.92 wt%, Zr 〈 142 ppm, Hf 〈 4.6) which are typical for subduction-related potassic igneous rocks from a mature continental-arc setting. The rocks have evolved compositions with relatively low mg# 〈 53. Their high Ba/Nb and high Rb/Nb ratios (up to 87 and 31, respectively) clearly distinguish them from rocks derived from within-plate settings. The rocks from Bajo de la Alumbrera contain average ratios of Fe2O3/(FeO+Fe2O3) as high as 0.49 reflecting the oxidized nature of their parental melts.

Notes: Abstract We report a search for γ rays emanating from Coulomb excitation of fast (30–46 MeV/u) radioactive projectiles8He,11,12,14Be interacting with a lead target. These are clearly identified by their Doppler shift. The 320 keV 1/2− → 1/2+ γ transition from11Be was observed with a cross-section of 191±26 mb which is noticeably less than expected from the known lifetime and in the perturbation limit of pure Coulomb excitation. In the other nuclei rather stringent upper limits of 0.01 to 0.2 Weisskopf units, are placed on the hypothetical transition to 1− states.
