Notes: In the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror, ion cyclotron range of frequency heating has been used effectively in the central cell. The ion temperature becomes several keV and an ion beta value is a few %. Semiconductor detectors are used for measurement of high energy protons in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the magnetic field line. Observed pitch angle distribution peaks near the cyclotron resonance layer and estimated pressure profile in the axial direction is consistent with the profile from a diamagnetic loop array. Strong temperature anisotropy can drive an Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) mode unstable. In a typical discharge, the temporal evolution of the endloss high energy ions has strong correlation with that of the AIC-mode amplitude. The enhancement of the loss of high energy ions due to the AIC mode is suggested. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The relationship between the photoluminescence (PL) intensity due to the W (or I1) center and the oxygen concentration in implanted silicon crystals was studied. The PL intensity of the W center decreased consistently with increasing oxygen concentration for carbon-implanted samples with a wide range of carbon fluences, while it showed no dependence on the oxygen concentration for samples implanted with elements such as hydrogen, silicon, and heavy metals. Based on these results and considerations of the reactions of intrinsic defects generated by implantation, the origin of the PL W center was attributed to a defect composed of silicon self-interstitials. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hatching rates and hatching times (50% hatch) of red sea bream, Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel), eggs in culture media that were prepared to dilute rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Muller extract at 4000-, 6000-. 8000- and 10 000-fold with artificial sea water (σ15, = 24.0) were investigated. Although differences in hatching rate between the culture media and control artificial sea water were negligible, hatching time was significantly shorter in media at 4000- and 6000-fold dilutions than in media at 8000- and 10 000-fold dilutions and in the control artificial sea water, when the eggs immediately post spawning were incubated. The hatching rates of eggs at three developmental stages, immediately post-spawning, gastrula stage and heart-beat initiation stage, incubated respectively in the medium at 6000-fold dilution and the control, did not differ either, yet the hatching times at each egg stage in the medium were significantly shorter than that in the control. These results suggest that hatching enzyme secretion from the hatching glands is promoted to perceive chemical stimuli in the water-soluble fraction of rotifer extract via the embryo's chemoreceptors, from the heart-beat initiation stage to immediately before hatching, thus shortening the hatching time.

Notes: The need to control and manage the effects of urban, industrial and agricultural development on Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, led to the formation of the Lake Biwa Comprehensive Development Project (LBCDP). This article describes the nature and effects of the development, how the LBCDP was conceptualized, implemented and managed, and comments on its effectiveness. Although the basic objective of the project was to promote development of the Keihanshin region by providing additional water, other important objectives included the conservation of the natural environment, the promotion of public welfare, and the restoration of water quality. To achieve objectives on a sustainable basis, extensive political, legislative, social, technological and environmental matters needed comprehensive consideration. This article considers such matters in detail.

Notes: Genetic abnormalities in human oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) were examined using restriction landmark genomic scanning (RLGS), a method of two-dimensional gel analysis allowing detection of amplifications and other aberrations in genomic DNA. DNAs from 11 oral tumours as well as from contiguous normal squamous epithelium, were cleaved with the restriction enzyme Not I, [32P] end-labeled and electrophoretically size-fractionated. Following a second digestion employing Hinf I, the further fragmented DNA was again electrophoretically separated. Five fragments/spots were found amplified in at least 64% (7/11) (chromosome nos. 4, 9–12 or 22) of carcinomas, with one of these spots amplified in 100% (chromosome no. 4) of tumour samples. In addition, six other spots were frequently reduced in at least 55% (chromosome nos. 15 or 9–12) of tumour tissues. Further characterization of these common changes is needed to determine if they represent important alterations in OSCC.

Notes: Abstract The present work was undertaken as part of a study to clarify the relationship between the electrical properties and the microstructure of the SnO2-glass composite. The glass composites with different particle dispersions of SnO2 were prepared under various mixing conditions of the starting powder. The densification behaviour and the electrical properties of the glass composites were discussed from quantitative analysis of the dispersion of SnO2 particles in glass matrices. As a result, the glass composite having homogeneous particle dispersion densified and showed an abrupt increase in conductivity (κ) and the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) at a low firing temperature. But after the completion of densification, the glass composite with the inhomogeneous dispersion of SnO2 particles showed a high κ and a TCR close to zero because the highly aggregated SnO2 particles connect with each other to form highly electrically conductive networks.

Notes: Abstract SnO2—glass composites are promising materials for nitrogen-fireable thick film resistor systems. However, the SnO2—glass composite has many undesirable properties which should be improved for industrial application, such as a high electrical resistivity and a large negative temperature coefficient of electrical resistance. This work was undertaken to make a survey of the methods for improvement in the electrical properties of the SnO2—glass composites. The effect of the addition of Cu particles, with a large positive temperature coefficient of electrical resistance, on the electrical properties of SnO2—glass composites has been investigated. Cu particles have been coated with semiconductive SnO2 fine particles by hydrolysing tin and antimony ethoxides then firing. The coated particles have been applied as conductive components in the glass composite. Using SnO2-coated Cu particles, Cu and SnO2 particles are homogeneously dispersed in a glass matrix, and the electrical properties of the glass composites largely depend on the volume fraction of Cu in the glass composite. The volume fraction of Cu in the glass composite is determined by a Cu/SnO2 volume ratio in the coated particles. From the experimental evidence, it is thought feasible to produce the glass composite having well-controlled electrical properties by the suitable selection of the Cu/SnO2 ratio in the coated particles.

Notes: Abstract To determine whether heat shock proteins can be utilized as a biomarker for cytotoxicity of dental materials the induction of synthesis of heat shock proteins by mercuric chloride was examined. To analyse the synthesis of heat shock proteins, HeLa cells were labelled with [35S] methionine, and the labelled proteins were separated by SDS-PAGE and autoradiographed. Incubation of the cells in a medium containing 1.25 to 40 μM mercuric chloride markedly increased the synthesis of HSP70. At 20 or 40 μM mercuric chloride in medium, HeLa cells synthesized HSP70 at 2 h after exposure, maximally at 4–7 h, and gradually diminished thereafter. Examination of the cytotoxicity of mercuric chloride by the conventional neutral red uptake assay revealed a reduction of uptake of the dye in the presence of mercuric chloride at 40 μM and above. These findings suggest that the induction of synthesis of HSP70 is one of the most sensitive cellular responses caused by mercury ion, and the heat shock protein assay can be utilized for evaluation of the cytotoxicity of dental materials.
