Notes: Abstract Evidence from cDNA cloning has shown that calcitonin receptors (CTRs) have seven potential transmembrane domains. In this study, structural analysis of CTRs from ten cultured human tumor cell lines and 117 human blood samples demonstrated allelic variants at the 1377th nucleotide in intracellular domain 4, expressing either proline or leucine as the 463rd amino acid. It was found that the variant with proline at this site was the more prevalent type of CTR among the Japanese population.

Notes: Abstract Five patients were admitted to our hospital because of classical heat stroke during the heat waves which attacked our country in the summers 1994 and 1995. The clinical and laboratory findings of all patients suggested the rapid progress of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Blood purification (BP) therapy, in addition to conventional treatment, was performed in three of the patients. Despite their disastrous general condition, all completely recovered or recovered sufficiently to be transferred to a rehabilitation hospital. Two additional patients were treated with conventional treatment only and both died in 1–3 days after admission.Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings on admission showed no differences between the cases receiving BP therapy and those not receiving BP therapy. These findings suggest that, in heat stroke patients, additional BP therapy may provide a better prognosis than conventional therapy only. These beneficial effects of BP may have been due mainly to the removal of proinflammatory cytokines related to heat stroke.

Notes: Abstract We have cloned a pyr4 gene encoding orotidine-5′-monophosphate decarboxylase of the filamentous fungus Rhizopus niveus. The pyr4 gene of R. nivens has an open reading frame composed of 265 amino-acid residues and has two putative introns. We have also isolated a pyr4 mutant of Rhizopus delemar from 5-fluoroorotic acid-resistant mutants and transformed it with the pyr4 gene of R. niveus as a selectable marker. Introduced DNA was integrated into the chromosome in a multiple tandem array. The mitotic stability of the introduced DNA was increased by a repeated sporulation process. The expression of the Escherichia coli β-glucuronidase gene in R. delemar was successfully obtained under the control of the pgk2 gene promoter of R. niveus by co-transformation with the pyr4 gene.

Notes: The strain dependence of the critical current, Ic, of Bi2223/Ag/Ag-alloy compositesuperconducting tapes has been studied both experimentally and analytically under bendingdeformation for two types of tape used in the VAMAS bending round-robin program (classified asVAM1 and 3). Our former analysis showed that the experimentally obtained Ic values were betweenthe calculated ones based on a damage-free initial state and a case where delamination occupied thefull width of the tape mid-plane. The experimentally obtained Ic values were explained by thedelamination occupying partial width of the tape mid-plane. However, the microscopic observationindicated that the delamination location in the thickness direction was not limited to the mid-plane.In the present study, the analysis was modified to incorporate the movement of the delaminationlocation in the thickness direction. The calculated Ic values with delamination increased when thedelamination location moved to compressive side of the tape, and decreased when that moved totensile side of the tape. Finally, the experimental Ic values can be understood by the distribution ofdelamination in both width and thickness direction

Notes: In an open-label, multicentre, randomized, parallel group study, 164 women with endometriosis were assigned to treatment. Out of these women, 81 received danazol (600 mg daily for 8 weeks, then 400 mg for 16 weeks) and 83 were given gestrinone (2.5 mg twice a week for 24 weeks). Five weeks before the start of treatment clinical evaluation and diagnostic laparoscopy were performed during the screening visit. Drug assignment and laboratory data assessment were carried out within 3 days of the estimated onset of the menstrual cycle at baseline visit. The response to treatment was assessed during visits at weeks 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24; at the last visit a second laparoscopy was performed. Therapeutic efficacy was evaluated by analysis of the laparoscopic scores assessed according to the revised American Fertility Society classification. Symptomatic response was measured by clinical scores and laboratory data. In one centre, bone mineral density was also recorded. One patient in the danazol group discontinued treatment due to a cutaneous rash as a probable adverse reaction at the beginning of the study. The therapeutic efficacy of danazol and gestrinone did not differ significantly when the revised American Fertility Society scores were compared. The symptomatic response also showed no statistical difference when clinical examination scores were analysed. There was no significant difference between the drugs in laboratory data, including bone mineral density, with respect to adverse events. Analysis of clinical scores showed that danazol was superior to gestrinone with respect to acne and irregular bleeding. Based on these data, we conclude that both danazol and gestrinone are reliable in the treatment of endometriosis and offer similar results.

Notes: Number of Cu atom(s) in the 1.014 eV copper center in silicon crystal was determined from an accurately measured relationship between the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of the center and Cu concentration in the crystal. For Cu concentrations lower than about 1×1014 atom/cm3, the PL intensity increased linearly with increasing Cu concentration. From this result and the law of mass action, it was concluded that the Cu center had only one Cu atom in it, contradicting the long-believed pair Cu model. Based on already published data and the present result, a structural model in which the Cu atom was bonded at the center of the Si–Si bond was presented for the Cu center. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to determine dissociation energy of the 1.014 eV photoluminescence (PL) Cu center in silicon crystal, decay of the PL intensity of the center by annealing samples at various temperatures was measured. The samples were prepared by contamination of Cu from Cu solution and heat treatment at 700 °C followed by rapid cooling to room temperature. From the temperature dependence of the time constant of the decay of the PL center, activation energy of dissociation of the center was obtained. The value was 0.47+±0.05 eV, which was much smaller than that (1.02 eV) obtained by the decay of the deep level transient spectroscopy Cu center peak at Ev+0.09 eV. The present value could reasonably explain the rapid thermalization of rearrangement of the centers after the release of stress which had been observed earlier. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background  Although it has been recognized that photoageing and chronological ageing differ in various morphological and biological aspects, the characteristic alterations of cutaneous neurogenic factors in photoaged skin are poorly characterized. Objectives  To characterize cutaneous neurogenic factors, including innervation, neuropeptides, nerve growth factor and interactions of mast cells, in photoaged skin.Subjects and methods  Paired biopsy specimens were obtained from sun-exposed volar forearm skin and from sun-protected dorsal upper arm skin of 20 elderly subjects. Various cutaneous neurogenic factors, including innervation, neuropeptides, neurokinin receptor, nerve growth factor, neurogenic inflammation and morphology of mast cells, were compared in sun-exposed vs. sun-protected skin quantitatively and qualitatively. Results  Cutaneous neurogenic factors associated with photoageing were characterized by a significant increase in the densities of dermal and intraepidermal nerve fibres, a correlation between epidermal innervation and the severity of photodamage, increases in the number of neuropeptidergic sensory nerve fibres in the dermis and in tissue levels of sensory neuropeptides, increases in the content of nerve growth factor, reduced expression of neurokinin receptor 1 by epidermal keratinocytes and by vascular endothelial cells and a tachykinin-specific reduction of cutaneous neurogenic inflammation. Mast cells in photodamaged skin showed several characteristic morphological features, including various degrees of activation and an intimate association with fibroblasts, which were distinct from those in sun-protected skin. Furthermore, mast cells in photodamaged skin possessed larger amounts of substance P within their granules than did those in sun-protected skin. Conclusions  These findings document for the first time characteristic alterations of cutaneous neurogenic factors in photodamaged skin and suggest that the cutaneous nervous system may be involved in photoageing processes.
