Notes: Abstact: The kinetic energy spectrum and the polarization of the PSI neutron beam produced in the reaction 12C(p,n)X at 0° with 590 MeV polarized protons were investigated. A strong energy dependence of the neutron beam polarization is observed which was not expected at the time the neutron beam was built.

Notes: Abstract Ras-related, guanine nucleotide-binding proteins of the Ypt/Rab family play a key role at defined steps in vesicular transport, both in yeast and in mammalian cells. In yeast, Ypt1p has an essential function late in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to Golgi transport, and the redundant Ypt31/Ypt32 GTPases have been proposed to act in transport through and/or from the Golgi. Here we report that mutant alleles of YPT31 and YPT32, whose gene products have a reduced affinity for GTP, are able to suppress the dominant lethal phenotype of YPT1 N121I . Co-expression of YPT1 N121I and the suppressor YPT31 N126I allow essentially undisturbed secretory transport in the absence of the respective wild-type GTPases. Such mutant cells massively overaccumulate 60–100 nm vesicles and are heat sensitive. It appears likely that the mutant GTPases, which are defective in nucleotide binding, compete for the binding of common interacting protein(s). These and other genetic interactions between YPT1, YPT31/32, ARF1 and SEC4 described here strongly support the view that Ypt31p and Ypt32p have a central, Golgi-associated function in anterograde or retrograde transport.

Notes: Abstract We report six cases of presenile (five) and senile (one) progressive dementia with a mild-to-marked frontal or frontotemporal atrophy and ventricular dilation (Frontal Lobe Degeneration [FLD]). The most prominent microscopic features were layer-dependet neuronal depletion of the cortex, spongiosis, and cortical and subcortical gliosis. Five cases showed additional degeneration of the S. nigra, and two also had motor neuron disease. Despite the absence of Pick cells and bodies, such cases have many features in common with Pick atrophy. Because Pick cells and bodies are inconstantly occurring features in other-wise typical cases of Pick atrophy, they cannot be regarded as inevitable markers of the latter. In our opinion, cases with mild frontal or frontotemporal atrophy as described herein and by others match the grades 1 and 2 in terms of Schneider's classification of Pick atrophy [37]. As long as the etiology of both Pick atrophy and the socalled FLD is unknown, and we finally have to follow morphological criteria for classification, there is apparently no convincing reason to introduce a separate category, such as FLD or FTA, for the cases with moderate or mild frontal atrophy and dementia of frontal lobe type, which can be sufficiently classified with the Pick spectrum of lobar atrophy.

Notes: Summary.  Second generation enzyme immunoassays (EIA-2) for antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) have a higher specificity and sensitivity than first generation enzyme immunoassays (EIA-1). We studied how many anti-HCV-positive blood donors were missed by the EIA-1, how many were false positive, how false-positive donors should be dealt with and how the results of the EIA-2 correlate to demographic data and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level. A total of 208, 544 northern German blood donors, not preselected for anti-HCV negativity, were tested for anti-HCV with EIA-2 and, if repeatably reactive (rr), were retested with a licensed supplementary test (RIBA-2). 0.43% of the donors were EIA-2 rr, but only 0.12% of women and 0.09% of men were RIBA-2 positive. RIBA-2 positivity rates were very low in donors 18 to 27 years old (0.03% and 0.05%) and rose with age in women but not in men. Infected women were significantly more often Rhesus-negative than men. The rate of unspecifically positive EIA-2 results (entirely negative in RIBA-2) increased with age in both sexes and did not correlate with ALT. The ALT distribution was age-dependent with a different pattern for men and women. Confirmation of EIA-2 results with RIBA was rare when ALT was low and frequent when ALT was high. ALT screening before introduction of Anti-HCV detected one out of six infected donors. To exclude this one infectious donation, 46 uninfected donations had to be excluded in addition. Only 8% of the then RIBA-2-positive donors were not detected by EIA-1. Apparent seroconversions in EIA-2 are usually not specific: only 1 out of 66 apparent seroconversions could be confirmed by RIBA-2 suggesting recent HCV infection. 0.15% of the donor population showed an inconsistent EIA-2 pattern during follow-up. We conclude that donors should not be excluded from further donations, even on the basis of multiple EIA-1 positive results or on the basis of only one EIA-2 positive donation. Anti-D-immunoglobulin prophylaxis may have been a source of infection in some Rhesus-negative women. ALT screening should not be discontinued because recent HCV infection can be detected earlier by ALT than by anti-HCV, but exclusion limits should be elevated to increase specificity and limit unnecessary exclusion of donations.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Background: For more than ten years, a live, attenuated varicella vaccine is available. With the licensure of a temperature stable vaccine preparation in Germany in 1994, a cost reduction from DM 510,– to DM 99.50 was achieved with a general vaccine availability independent of special cooling requirements. In the United States, in Japan and in Southern Korea varicella vaccine is already in use for routine vaccination in the second year of life. In contrast, in Germany the recommendation for VZV-vaccination is restricted to patients at increased risk for varicella complications as well as for regular intimate contacts of such persons. Discussion: In this article a short review of varicella and zoster is given, the characteristics of the VZV-vaccine are described and the options for future use in Germany are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A case ofNeisseria meningitidis peritonitis in a 41-year-old female undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for end-stage renal failure due to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is reported. The bacterial strain was serosubtyped as 4∶PI.15, a rarely encountered type. Surprisingly, the minimal inhibitory concentration of vancomycin for the isolate was low (16 mg/l). This may have contributed to the complete recovery of the patient.

Notes: Abstract  This study was performed to evaluate the sensitivity of immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgA antibodies to pertussis toxin and filamentous hemagglutinin in diagnosing pertussis from a single serum sample. The pertussis group was defined according to the World Health Organization pertussis case definition. The control group coughed for 21 days or more but had no microbiological or serological evidence of Bordetella infection. Both cohorts were divided into infants (〈12 months of age), toddlers (1–4 years) and school children (5–10 years). There were 525 subjects in the pertussis group and 321 in the control group, with an even distribution of genders. IgG and IgA antibodies to pertussis toxin and filamentous hemagglutinin were measured in a standardized enzyme immunoassay. Antibody levels beyond the 95 percentile of the control cohort were regarded as indicative of recent contact, setting the specificity level at 0.95. Acute serum samples drawn between 1 week and 3 weeks after the onset of coughing showed a low sensitivity (2–19%) for diagnosing pertussis. In convalescent samples taken 5–10 weeks after the onset of symptoms, detection of IgG anti-pertussis toxin was the best single test, with a sensitivity of 61%, 65%, and 74% in infants, toddlers and school children, respectively. A combination of IgG anti-pertussis toxin and IgA anti-filamentous hemagglutinin using age-specific reference values had a sensitivity of 81–89% in diagnosing pertussis from a single serum sample taken 5–10 weeks after the beginning of symptoms.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated hole doped (by lithium) and electron-doped (by nickel metal) NiO with photoemission (PES), inverse photoemission (IPES) and low and high energy electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Both types of doping create empty states approximately in the middle of the charge transfer gap of undoped NiO.

Notes: Abstract. The analyzing power, $A_{oono}$ , and the polarization transfer observables $K_{onno}$ , $K_{os''so}$ and $K_{os''ko}$ have been measured in neutron-proton elastic scattering at 260, 318, 386, 472 and 538 MeV for c.m. scattering angles between 64° and 160°. The data were obtained at PSI with a polarized neutron beam and a polarimeter analyzing the transverse polarization of the outgoing proton. They make a significant impact on the knowledge of the Isospin I = 0 nucleon-nucleon scattering.
