Notes: Summary Concentration of cholecystokinin-8 and the activity of glutamic acid decarboxylase were determined in the various cerebral cortical subdivisions of Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata fuscata) at three different ages (embryonic 4 months, full-term and adult). The CCK-8 immunoreactive material extracted with 90% methanol from the cerebral cortex of the adult and foetal monkey were shown to be identical with synthetic cholecystokinin-8 by the criterion of co-elution on gel filtration chromatography (Sephadex G-50). The peptide concentration increased dramatically by about 30–80 fold (in terms of protein) and 17–28 fold (in terms of wet weight) between embryonic 4-month-old and full-term monkeys, while the level decreased 1/6–1/16 (protein) and 1/4–1/10 (wet weight) between full-term and adult monkeys. In adults, the highest levels of the peptide was observed in the association cortex, orbital prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex. Glutamic acid decarboxylase activity, on the other hand, gradually increased about 4–10 fold (protein) between embryonic 4-month-old and adult animals and there was little variation in the increase rate among the cerebral subdivisions. In contrast to cholecystokinin-8, no reduction in the enzyme activity occurred between full-term and adult animals. The high level of cholecystokinin-8 in the embryonic period suggests that the peptide may participate in the regulation of the development of primate cerebral cortex.

Notes: Abstract The effect of quark exchange between different nucleons on the one pion exchange potential is studied in the framework of the resonating group method. The calculated phase shifts including the one pion exchange potential with quark exchange in addition to the one gluon plusσ meson exchange are shown to be consistent with experiments. Especially thep-wave phase shifts are improved by taking into account the quark exchange on the one pion exchange potential.

Notes: Summary The hydroxyproline concentration in both the soluble and insoluble material from trichloroacetic acid-treated serum from postpartum mice was determined. The hydroxyproline concentration in the insoluble material increased, but that in the soluble material did not increase during the uterine involuting period.

Notes: Abstract A high-power, line-tunable NH3 laser pumped by a TEA CO2 laser has been developed for application to laser isotope separation of tritium. Laser lines from15NH3 are newly observed in a range from 11.24 to 13.23 μm. The performance of an15NH3 laser is compared to that of an14NH3 laser.

Notes: Abstract DNA polymorphism patterns linked to the βA-globin gene were analyzed in healthy Japanese using four different restriction endonucleases. The chromosomes with the βA-globin gene were mapped through an evaluation of the presence of seven different restriction sites (HincII 5′ to ε; HindIII in Gγ and Aγ; HincII in, and 3′ to, ψβ1; AvaII in β; Bam-HI 3′ to β). Among 36 chromosomes analyzed, 20 chromosomes had a haplotype of [+−−−−−+]. Among 55 individuals examined, 7 possessed a homozygous haplotye of [+−−−−−+]. All Japanese with the AγT-globin gene had a subhaplotype of [−++−+] 5′ to the δ-globin gene. Their major haplotypes were [−++−+−+] and [−++−++−]. It was expected that the presence of the AγT-globin gene in Japanese may be deduced from subhaplotypes 5′ to the δ-globin gene.

Notes: Commercial cellulase preparations from Trichoderma viride and Aspergillus niger were immobilized on porous silica glass and ceramics such as alumina and titania with titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) and on their silanized derivatives with glutaraldehyde (GLUT). The amounts of the immobilized enzymes were in the range 10-50 mg/g carrier (dry) depending on the kind of carrier and immobilization method. Their activities toward carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xylan, aryl-β-glucoside, and aryl-β-xyloside were 3-53% of those of the native enzymes. The optimum pH of the enzymes shifted to the acidic side in most cases, whereas the optimum temperatures were nearly the same as those of native ones. The activity of immobilized enzyme preparations towards CMC did not change significantly during continuous operation over a periods of 60 days. Finally, xylan was hydrolyzed with the immobilized enzymes, and the sugars formed were investigated.

Notes: Abstract Expectation values of the total spinS of nucleons in nuclei are very quenched. This quenching is shown to be hardly explained by the mixture ofΔ-hole states. The quenching thus provides the best evidence for the role of non-central parts of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, especially the tensor interaction.

Notes: The incorporation and amphoteric behavior of Si impurities in Si-doped (100) oriented molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) GaAs layers grown under different As4/Ga flux ratios but with a fixed Si flux have been studied using Hall effect measurements, photothermal ionization spectroscopy and photoluminescence. The Si donor concentration increases substantially with increasing As4/Ga flux ratio, while the Si acceptor concentration remains less than ∼ 1013 cm-3, regardless of the variation of As4/Ga flux ratio. The observed increase of carrier concentration with increasing V/III ratio is not due to a change of site preference of Si impurities from Ga to As sublattice sites as previously supposed, but is due to the increase in incorporation of Si donor. This result can be explained by the kinetic effects associated with surface reaction processes involved in Si impurity incorporation. From these results it is clear that the sticking coefficient of Si is less than unity, and varies with the growth conditions.

Notes: The threshold intensity for detection of an AC electric field was studied in human subjects at several different temperatures and humidities. The dorsum and palm of the hand were exposed to fields, representing hairy and hairless skin, in order to clarify whether hair movement is critical for field detection. Experiments were carried out on human subjects (seven men and four women) during hot humid weather of July-August and dry cool air of October-November. Threshold values obtained in the summer were 30-65 kV/m for the hairy skin on the dorsum of the hand, while for the hairless skin on the palm the threshold was 〉 115 kV/m (highest field available due to limitations of the power supply). During the fall, the threshold was much higher than during the summer. We sought possible reasons for the difference and found that humidity was the main factor. Relative permittivity of woman's hair was then estimated by measuring capacitance of the hairs under dry (35% RH) and wet (85% RH) conditions at 20 °C. The values of relative permittivity obtained under these two conditions differed by several times the average. The differences in detection thresholds may be attributable to the different relative permittivities of the hairs under dry and wet conditions.
