Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Whereas 2.4 is likely to be an upper limit for theDq/B-value of Cr(3)-complexes which show fluorescence the existence of a lower bound is rather unlikely. Experimental evidence suggests that the energy difference between the minima of the2 E g- and the4 T 2g-potential curves is one of the factors determining the relative intensities of phosphorescence and fluorescence.

Notes: Summary As part of an ongoing study of the influence of environmental factors on pregnancy, childbirth, and fetuses, comparisons have been made between incidences in 1969–1974 and in 1980–1982 of chromosome aberrations in liverborn children in the same area of Denmark. The incidence of chromosome aberrations in the first period was 2.6 per 1000, compared with 4.1 per 1000 during the latter period. However, the difference was mainly due to an increase in inversions, and this in turn was due to a difference in chromosome staining methods between the two periods. It is concluded that the Danish study and similar studies in the United States, Canada, and Scotland indicate that early detection of chromosome aberrations by chromosome examination at birth is indicated in order to be able to inform and counsel parents of children with chromosome aberrations. Chromosome examination at birth is also of importance in the diagnosis of structural inheritable chromosome aberrations and consequent family investigation and genetic counseling.

Notes: Summary A chromosome examination was made on 11,148 consecutively live-born children: 93 had a chromosome abnormality and 192 a chromosome variant. The physical aspects of the children with chromosome abnormalities and variants were compared with those of the children with normal karyotypes. Children with aneuploid or unbalanced chromosome abnormalities were more frequently immature or not fully developed at birth than those with normal karyotypes. Birth weight was lower in children with all types of chromosome abnormalities, including reciprocal translocations and chromosome variants. The low birth weight in children with chromosome variants was mainly due to the low birth weight of children with G variants. These children were also subject to a higher frequency of special delivery treatment. Heart disorders were increased in children with aneuploid or unbalanced chromosome abnormalities. The frequency of foetal erythroblastosis was increased in children with short Y as well as in children with acentric fragments. Neonatal mortality was higher in children with aneuploid or unbalanced chromosome abnormalities than in children with normal karyotypes.

Notes: Abstract The energy and angular distributions ofp, d, t,3He and4He from the three targets Cu, Ag and Au were measured at five different angles for bremsstrahlung with peak energy 500MeV. The measurements were made using a telescope consisting of four surface-barrier detectors. The experimental data are compared with cascade-evaporation calculations. For the4He-distributions the calculations were extended to include the contribution from knock-out of surface alphas by the cascade nucleons. The comparison shows that the main contribution comes from evaporation but that there is a direct component of the order of 10%.

Notes: Abstract An exposure system for exposing plants to gradients of gaseous air pollutants in the field was tested using sulfur dioxide SO2 and hydrogen fluoride (HF). Well defined linear gradients of SO2 concentration and HF flux were easily produced and were repeatable from exposure to exposure. The gradients were altered by wind speed and direction, but in tightly closed canopies, the alterations were minor. This system has many advantages: a graded series of exposures can be conducted in a small area, plants may be grown using accepted cultural practices, the cost of the apparatus is low, and more than one pollutant can be used, either concurrently or countercurrently. Disadvantages include the requirement for an intensive air monitoring network and an unnatural vertical pollutant profile in the canopy. The gradient system should be used as a supplement to open-top chambers, and not as a replacement for them.

Notes: Summary Abnormal myoglobinemia (above 77 Μg/1) and free hemoglobin in plasma were found in 16 runners and in nine non runners immediately following distance running. The same abnormalities were found in six elite rowers following rowing. In parallel with the rise in myoglobin and free hemoglobin a rise was found in serum concentrations of cellular enzymes (LDH, CK, ASAT, alkaline phosphatase) and of various metabolites. We found no proteinuria nor casts in the urine. Non runners had a higher rise in serum myoglobin than runners. Competitive running caused a rise in the serum concentration of the heart specific fraction of creatine kinase in seven of the nine (healthy) elite runners. The abnormal findings are only explainable on the basis of leakage of proteins from muscle cells to the circulation in otherwise healthy, well trained persons. Myoglobinemia and a transient rhabdomyolysis is a common phenomenon in long distance running, but evidently also occurs in distance rowing. Three months of running training prevented most of the muscle damage from relaxed jogging in the nine previous non runners. Neither the observed myoglobinemia nor the hemoglobinemia resulted in any significant loss of iron in the urine.
