Notes: Summary The mechanism of resistance to foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) which occurs 2 days after divinyl ether-maleic only anhydride (pyran copolymer) treatment but diminishes by the 7th day was investigated. Adsorption of virus by minced infant mouse spleen, muscle, kidney, heart or liver was not affected either at 2 days or 7 days after treatment of the mice with pyran. However,in vitro multiplication of FMDV in minced kidney was affected by pyran at both times. The resistance of mice 2 days after treatment was related to absence of virus in muscle, kidney, and spleen tissues. Seven days after pyran administration, however, FMDV was recovered from muscle and spleen but not kidney. Interferon was recovered from various tissues 2 days but not 7 days after mice were injected with pyran. Other unknown polymer-induced antiviral factors as well as interferon may have been related to the resistance mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Biogenic silica (BSi), total phosphorus (TP), and biologically available phosphorus (AVP) were measured in short cores from Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Peaks in BSi concentration and peaks in BSi:TP or BSi:AVP ratios provided stratigraphic signals of water column silica (Si) depletion as a response of increased diatom production to P enrichment and decreased diatom production resulting from silica depletion. By contrast the stratigraphic record of P accumulation provided very weak signals of the historical nutrient enrichment in the water column. These results indicate that system P recycling has a higher rate constant than Si recycling and, as a consequence, that relatively small levels of P enrichment can increase diatom production and sedimentation eventually causing Si depletion and Si-limited diatom production in the water mass.

Notes: Abstract Fusarium spp. isolated from plant materials grown in the hot, humid climate of North Carolina were tested for production of mycotoxins. Isolates of F. acuminatum, F. graminearum, F. moniliforme, F. oxysporum, and F. solani produced zearalenone while isolates of F. equiseti and F. graminearum produced T-2 toxin and deoxynivalenol, respectively. This is the first report of zearalenone production by F. solani. The toxins were identified by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. These findings suggest that there are toxigenic strains of Fusarium indigenous to the warmer regions of the USA and that fasariotoxicoses of animals in this region are not necessarily the result of importing toxic grains from the cooler, upper midwestern USA.

Notes: Abstract Three patients with giardiasis have been shown to have vitamin B12 malabsorption which returned to normal after eradication of the parasite. Radioactive vitamin B12 with sufficient amounts of biologically active intrinsic factor to exclude host intrinsic factor deficiency was administered. The subjects did not suffer from immunodeficiency states, and bacterial overgrowth did not appear to be a causative factor. The implications of this finding in relation to mechanisms of malabsorption in giardiasis are discussed. It is concluded that competition between parasite and host enterocyte is the most likely explanation for vitamin B12 malabsorption.

Notes: Abstract The 1/θ sum rules are derived for two-component uniform many-body systems. The density fluctuations are quantized for the case when both components satisfy Bose statistics. Information about the long wavelength behavior of the liquid-structure functions is deduced from both the sum rules and the zero-point density fluctuations.

Notes: Summary Many of the observed but yet unexplained phenomena associated with granular flow have been attributed to the development of a layered microstructure within the material. In particular the microstructure development has been called on to explain many of the experimental observations that cannot be accounted for in the presently available theoretical studies. While the attributions are based on sound physical arguments, the complexity of the processes involved has prohibited the inclusion of microstructure development in theoretical models. As a result no one has yet demonstrated how and to what extent the microstructure can account for the phenomena to which it has been ascribed. This paper addresses the effect of microstructure development for two dimensional flows by incorporating a heuristic model of the microstructure into a simple theoretical analysis.

Notes: Summary Mice treated with divinyl ether-maleic anhydride (DVE/MA) 7 days before, 2 days before, or simultaneously with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) viral antigens (aqueous or oil emulsified) were more resistant to virus infection and released antibody earlier than mice treated with antigen alone. Simultaneous treatment of swine with these antigens plus DVE/MA resulted in a slightly enhanced early antibody response, which, in a test with oil-emulsified antigen, was not associated with an early induced antiviral resistance to FMD. In general, the primary and secondary antibody responses to oil antigen plus DVE/MA were the same as in control swine receiving the antigen alone. However, swine sensitized with aqueous antigen plus DVE/MA responded faster and developed higher antibody titers after a secondary treatment with aqueous antigen than swine treated similarly but without DVE/MA.
