    Notes: The follicular proximal ends of arrector pili muscles anchor the bulge areas of human hair follicles. However, the location of the ends of these muscles towards the epidermis, especially the fine points of attachment, is not fully understood. Conventional serial sections of the scalp skin of a 12-month-old infant were examined. Most of the distal ends were situated in the upper dermis. while some seemed to be in close contact with the epidermal basal layers. In vertical sections of the scalp skin of 16-week-old fetus, double immunoenzyme staining showed a close topographic correlation between the epidermal ends of the arrector pili muscles and the epidermal and dermal Merkel cells. These findings allow speculation that fetal Merkel cells participate in the induction and alignment of arrector pili muscles.

    Notes: Abstract We examined 42 herpes gestationis sera with immunofluorescence of normal human skin sections, and found that anti-keratinocyte cell surface antibodies were detected specifically in 10 herpes gestationis sera. The diagnosis of these herpes gestationis cases was confirmed by detecting antibodies against the 180 kD bullous pemphigoid antigen with immunoblotting of its fusion protein. The results of immunoadsorption assay using baculoproteins of both pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus antigens indicated that the herpes gestalionis sera did not recognize common pemphigus antigens. Immunoblotting of human epidermal extracts and immunofluorescence of various tissues also suggested that the sera did not recognize any other desmosomal components or paraneoplastic pemphigus antigens. The significance of this reactivity is unclear. However, because no control bullous pemphigoid sera showed this reactivity, it may suggest a different pathophysiology between herpes gestationis and bullous pemphigoid.

Pancreatic secretion has been monitored in the isolated, blood-perfused canine pancreas, and the effects of depletion of serum calcium by infusion of EGTA on the increases in secretion produced by intra-arterial injections of dopamine and secretin have been investigated.2. Under resting conditions in preparations in dogs fasted for 24 h, the mean rate of pancreatic secretion was 16.4 μ1/min (s. e. m. = 2, n= 12). The mean concentrations of protein, bicarbonate and chloride in the pancreatic juice were 53.8 mg/ml (s. e. m. = 4.5), 18.0 mmol/1 (s. e. m. = 1.1) and 122.5 mmol/1 (s. e. m. = 7.5), respectively. Infusion of EGTA had no effect on resting secretion.3. Secretion elicited by dopamine or secretin was diminished about 50% during the intra-arterial infusion of EGTA (10−2 mM/ml) in the perfusing blood. The protein concentration in the secretion was diminished to a similar extent. The concentrations of bicarbonate and chloride in the pancreatic juice was not modified by EGTA infusion.4. Concomitant infusion of an equimolar concentration of CaCl2 solution abolished the inhibitory effects of EGTA infusion on the secretory responses to dopamine or secretin.5. The results suggest that dopamine and secretin influence the exocrine secretions of the pancreas by actions on both acinar and ductular cells. Acinar cell secretion is more susceptible to depletion of serum calcium levels than is secretion from ductular cells.

    Notes: We report a patient with herpetiform pemphigus(HP)who showed reactivity only with pemphigus vulgaris(PV)antigen but not with pemphigus foliaceus(PF)antigen. Direct and indirect immuno- fluorescence revealed keratinocyte cell surface staining in the lower layers of the epidermis, where desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) is expressed. Immunoblot analysis, using ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid- separated human epidermal extracts, revealed that the patient's serum recognized only a 130-kDa polypeptide which co-migrated with Dsg3. By antigen-specific immunoadsorption studies, using desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) and Dsg3 recombinant protein produced by baculovirus expression system, immunoreactivity of the patient's serum was completely adsorbed by Dsg3 alone, but not by Dsg1. These results indicate that this HP patient produced only anti-Dsg3 autoantibodies and no other autoantibodies against components of the keratinocyte cell surface. HP could be a variant of PV.in addition to PF, with unique clinical and histological features.

    Notes: Summary Multiple facial angiofibroma are thought to be a pathognomonic and common, feature of tuberous sclerosis. In contrast, it is rare to see multiple angiofibroma limited to one side of the face. We have studied a patient with multiple angiofibroma of one cheek, in order to search for other manifestations of tuberous sclerosis and to determine the histochemical identity of the angiofibroma. No evidence of other pathology known to be associated with the tuberous sclerosis complex was uncovered. Histopathology of the unilateral lesions revealed focal fibroplasias and positive cellular staining for factor XIIIa and vimentin similar to that described for bilateral angiofibroma. We suggested that the segmental expression of tuberous sclerosis, in the form of unilateral facial angiofibroma may result from a postzygotic mutation.

    Notes: Summary A patient with AIDS was found to have skin lesions which contained the organisms Pneumocystis carinii and Cryptococcus neoformans. Both organisms were identified using haematoxylin and eosin. Gomori methenamine silver. Giemsa and mucicarmine stains. Electron microscopy was performed and confirmed their presence. The clinical presentation, histopathology, differential diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous P. carinii and C. neoformans in AIDS is presented.

    Notes: Abstract Active electrode materials for a new zinc electrowinning process, in which the thermodynamic cell voltage is about half that of the conventional process by replacing oxygen evolution by anodic oxidation of SO2 produced in the zinc smelting process have been studied. Immersion in HF solution and subsequent cyclic voltammetry (CV) in sulfuric acid are known to be effective surface activation treatments of the amorphous alloy electrodes. The galvanostatic cathodic reduction (CR) treatment was applied to obtain further activation for sulfite oxidation for HF- and CV-treated electrodes prepared from amorphous nickel-valve metal-platinum group metal alloys. This treatment has been found to be effective in enhancing the activity. Among the amorphous Ni-40Nb alloys containing platinum group elements, the platinum-containing electrode showed the highest catalytic activity, which was higher than that of platinized platinum. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic activities of CR-treated electrodes prepared from amorphous alloys containing platinum and rhodium, and platinum and ruthenium were higher than that of the electrode containing only platinum. According to XPS analysis of the amorphous Ni-40Nb-1Pt-1Ru alloy specimen the enrichment of platinum and ruthenium occurred by CV treatment, and a small amount of oxidized platinum and ruthenium species remained on the electrode surfaces, but most of them were cathodically reduced to the metallic state by CR treatment. High catalytic activities for sulfite oxidation can be attributed to the metallic state of platinum and ruthenium contained in the alloy electrodes, even though the activity of these electrocatalysts is higher than that of pure Pt or Ru.

    Notes: Abstract Utilizing the fact that the equilibrium potential of oxygen evolution is lower than that of chlorine evolution, oxygen evolution in seawater electrolysis was enhanced by decreasing the polarization potential under galvanostatic conditions through increasing the effective surface area of manganese oxide electrodes. Electrodes were prepared by a thermal decomposition method. IrO2-coated titanium (IrO2/Ti electrode) was used as the substrate on which manganese oxide was coated (MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode). Subsequently, oxide mixtures of manganese and zinc were coated (MnOX–ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode). The effective surface area of the MnOX–ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrodes was increased by selective dissolution of zinc (leaching) into hot 6M KOH. The oxygen evolution efficiency of the MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode was 68–70%. Leaching of zinc from the MnOX–ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrodes with 25mol% or less zinc led to a significant increase in the oxygen evolution efficiency. The maximum efficiency attained was 86% after leaching of zinc from the MnOX–25mol%ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode. However, large amounts of zinc addition, such as 40mol% or more are detrimental because of a decrease in the oxygen evolution efficiency. This is due to the formation of a double oxide, ZnMnO3, which is hardly dissolved in hot 6M KOH.
