Notes: Abstract Plasma radiation from thin films of aluminum bombarded by non-normally incident 80 keV electrons has been investigated. Radiative decay of both volume plasmons and surface plasmons was observed with the surface plasmon radiation being very sensitive to contamination of the film surface by an oxide layer. The surface resonance occurs at 10.2 eV, whereas the volume resonance is at 15 eV. These values are in accord with electron energy-loss experiments.

Notes: Abstract The well-known methods of Coats-Redfern, Freeman-Carroll, and Achar et al. are modified to include the temperature dependence of the pre-exponential factor in the Arrhenius expression for the rate constant. These modifications serve to cast these methods into their most general Arrhenius form. Suggestions are given regarding various numerical methods for extracting the temperature dependence of the preexponential factor from thermogravimetric and derivative thermogravimetric data.

Notes: Abstract Absorption spectra in the visible to the near ultraviolet were measured on the Belgica chondrite B-7904 in a form of thin solid film made by the vacuum evaporation. The spectra obtained exhibit a sharp peak at 226 nm and a broad bump around 280nm. These features were found arising from the meteorite component FeS (troilite). The peak at 226 nm shows a doublet structure with the band-width considerably narrower than the 217.5 nm feature in the interstellar extinction. The absorption spectra obtained previously with the pulverized chondrites suspended in a liquid were also found reproducible by the pulverized FeS.

Notes: Abstract Anomalies in the intensity ofp-polarized light from concave diffraction gratings (Wood's anomalies) have been used to obtain surface plasmon dispersion curves for dielectric-metal layers on the grating surface. These include a 350 Å MgF2 layer and Al2O3 layers varying from a few angstroms to over 800 Å on an Al substrate. The wavelength range of the incident and diffracted light is from the visible to the vacuum ultraviolet (7,500−500 Å). Anomalous polarization peaks for Al2O3 layers in the vacuum ultraviolet (at ∼ 1,600 Å) are shown to shift significantly to longer wavelengths for only a few angstroms (up to 50 Å) of oxide thickness, while for thicknesses greater than ∼ 50 Å any further shift is small. In the visible region (〉 4,000 Å), on the other hand, the wavelength shifts are small for dielectric thicknesses up to ∼ 50 Å, but are large for thicknesses of several hundred angstroms. These results are in substantial agreement with the theoretical dispersion curves for these cases. Also considered are some of the effects of diffusion pump oil.

Notes: The optical constants of bovine plasma albumin in the form of a dry solid film have been determined in the 2-82 eV region of photon energy. The extinction coefficient k was obtained by transmission measurements on thin films on a calcium fluoride substrate and on ultrathin films of polystyrene supported by mesh screen. The refractive index n was determined by a Kramers-Kronig analysis using the measured values of k. The complex dielectric function ε and the energy-loss function -Im(1/ε) for charged particles were derived from the data of n and k. The result for k exhibit, in addition to the well-known absorptions at 4.4, 5.5, and 6.4 eV, a small peak at 7.6 eV, a shoulder around 9.7 eV, and a strong peak at 14.0 eV. A prominent peak at 22.7 eV in the energy-loss function exhibits a large degree of collective nature.

Notes: Measurements of optical characteristics such as light scattering and fluorescence of components in bacterial cells have been used to sort cells and to identify different classes of bacteria in a mixed suspension. More detailed studies require a knowledge of the optical properties of individual components of the cells. Because cells are composed largely of proteins, a measurement of the optical constants of horseradish peroxidase, a globular protein, would permit modeling of the refractive index profiles of complex inhomogeneous structures such as a bacterial spore. Spectral reflectance and transmittance measurements combined with Kramers-Kronig analyses have been used to obtain the real (n) and imaginary (k) parts of the complex refractive index N = n + ik of horseradish peroxidase over the wavelength interval from 0.13 to 2.5 μm. Samples were in the form of thin solid films, pressed pellets, and solutions in water. For wavelengths less than 0.6 μm, good agreement was obtained between the optical constants of the material derived from measurements made on the solid films and on the solutions in water. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
