    Notes: In situ mass spectral measurements of gas composition at the substrate surface were made during filament-assisted diamond growth. The input gases were various mixtures of CH4, O2, and H2 chosen in order to discern the effects of oxygen addition on diamond formation and growth. The gas phase chemistry was modeled as a one-dimensional flow reactor, and the measured and calculated species mole fractions were in good agreement. The model was then used to estimate mole fractions of several atomic and radical species which could not be measured. We find that addition of O2 has only a small effect on the radical mole fractions. However, O2 can reduce the effective initial hydrocarbon mole fraction, which is important because higher quality diamond is grown at a lower initial hydrocarbon mole fraction. Most important, perhaps is that O2 addition leads to the formation of sufficient gas phase OH to remove nondiamond (pyrolytic) carbon from the film. Thus, O2 addition allows diamond films to be grown under composition and temperature conditions which otherwise would produce largely nondiamond carbon.

    Notes: We have used a one-dimensional kinetic analysis to model the gas-phase chemistry that occurred during the diamond growth experiments of Chauhan, Angus, and Gardner [J. Appl. Phys. 47, 4746 (1976)]. In those experiments the weight of diamond seed crystals heated by lamps in a CH4/H2 environment was monitored by a microbalance. No filament or electric discharge was present. Our analysis shows that diamond growth occurred in this system by direct reaction of CH4 on the diamond surface. C2H2 and CH3, which have been proposed as diamond growth species, played no significant role there, although our results do not address their possible contributions in other systems such as filament- or plasma-assisted diamond growth.

    Notes: Experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that aromatic molecules inhibit the growth of diamond thin films. Small amounts of benzene vapor were added to a flowtube system for diamond film growth. In this system, diamonds are grown by adding methane or acetylene to a flow of atomic hydrogen at 800 °C. Mass spectrometric measurements verified that the benzene passed through the flowtube. No inhibition of the growth rate or decrease in the quality of the diamonds due to the presence of benzene was observed for either methane or acetylene.

    Notes: In this study, we have demonstrated that boron carbide, an extremely hard and wear-resistant material, can be deposited with hot filament-activated chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD). There are several benefits to using a hot filament system, including a high deposition rate and a relatively low substrate temperature with a process that is not line-of-sight. High purity, apparently amorphous boron carbide films were obtained by the use of a chlorine based precursor (which is less toxic than diborane). This indicates that either the hot filament helps in complete decomposition of BCl3 or the presence of high concentration of atomic hydrogen in a HFCVD environment helps in scavenging the chlorine. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.

    Notes: We have performed calculations to evaluate mechanisms for growth of diamond on fluorinated diamond surfaces. These surfaces are very hard and have excellent tribological properties. Our calculations show that steric repulsion between neighboring F atoms on the fully fluorinated surface studied is small, which−given the strength of C—F bonds−implies that this surface should be chemically very stable. Our analysis also shows that in the absence of hydrogen, growth of diamond on a fluorinated surface is thermodynamically so unfavorable that it will not occur. Finally, diamond growth on fluorinated surfaces could be quite favorable in the presence of hydrogen and hydrocarbons.

    Notes: To date diamond films grown with the combustion technique have used either acetylene or, rarely, ethylene as the fuel. However, there are barriers to large scale commercialization of the combustion technique using either fuel. For example, acetylene is relatively expensive and difficult to handle, while the use of ethylene gives relatively low growth rates. In this letter we propose replacing acetylene with MAPPTM gas, a commercial mixture of methyl acetylene and propadiene in liquefied petroleum gas (primarily propylene). MAPP gas is considerably cheaper, safer, and easier to handle than acetylene. Furthermore, the experiments described here suggest that MAPP gas flames are only slightly less efficient than acetylene flames at converting fuel carbon atoms into diamond. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have demonstrated that boron nitride films deposited on silicon and tantalum can be etched in a hot filament environment with an input gas composition of 1% methane in hydrogen. Etching experiments were carried out at around 800 K on a tantalum foil and at somewhat higher temperatures on silicon substrates. If the etchant is atomic hydrogen or methyl radical, then we estimate etching efficiencies (atoms etched per collision) of ∼10−5 or 10−4 for these species, respectively. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
