Notizen: Generation of extra facets on ridge-type triangles with (001)-, (110)-, and (201)-related equivalent slopes on GaAs (111) A substrates and stripes running in the [1¯10], [110], and [100] directions on (001) substrates during molecular beam epitaxy of GaAs/AlGaAs multilayers was investigated. By investigating local variation in layer thickness in the regions adjacent to extra (114)A, (110), and (1¯1¯1¯)B facets common to the (111)A and (001) patterned substrates and extra facets specific to the respective substrates and growth rates of the facets relative to the growth rate on the substrate plane, the orientation-dependent Ga surface diffusion length, λGa, was elucidated as λGa(001)(approximate)λGa(1¯1¯3¯)B〈{λGa(1¯1¯1 ¯)B,λGa(3¯3¯1¯)B,λGa(013),λGa(113)A}〈λGa(159)(approximate)λGa(114)A(approximate)λGa(111)A〈λGa(110). That is, λGa increases in the order of the (001), (1¯1¯1¯)B-related, (111)A-related, and (110) surfaces.

Notizen: By using the anisotropic image force theorem of Barnett and Lothe, single- and double-kink models for capped (buried) Si1−xGex strained layers are extended so as to take into account cubic anisotropy. The crystallographic configuration considered is such that the free surface is a (001) plane, misfit dislocation segments in the [11¯0] direction and threading dislocations in the [011] direction lie within a (1¯1¯1) glide plane, and the Burgers vector is 1/2[101]. The results show that the effect of cubic anisotropy is significant and that it tends to decrease the excess stress and to increase the critical layer thickness in both of the single- and double-kink models.

Notizen: Monochromatic x-ray imaging with toroidally bent crystals has been applied to investigate critical issues in laser fusion research in collaboration with Jena University [for example, I. Uschmann et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 66, 734 (1995)]. Described in this article is the study on x-ray diagnostics to provide simultaneously time, space, and spectral resolutions for the laser fusion experiments by the use of toroidally bent crystals. A monochromatic x-ray imager was developed, which consists of two sets of identical five bent crystals and a fast x-ray framing camera. The attained spatial resolution of 6 μm, time resolution of 34 ps, and spectral resolution of 10 eV are high enough to observe temporal evaluation and temperature distribution of the laser fusion hot core. In addition, a new x-ray imager with bent crystal was developed to investigate hydrodynamic instabilities occurring in laser-driven planer targets as one of the most critical issues in laser fusion research. The imager was so designed as to match the experiments using rather thick, massive targets irradiated under the same condition as in the high-gain experiments. Configuration and specifications of the imager are presented. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report the first use of toroidally bent crystals to record two-dimensional, spatially resolved, monochromatic images of laser-produced fusion plasma. The electron temperature was determined by seeding the deuterium fuel with argon and evaluating the intensity ratio of the two monochromatic images in the Ar+ 17Ly β and the Ar+ 16He β lines. Silicon and germanium crystals were chosen to achieve high diffraction reflectivities. Spatial resolution better than 10 μm was achieved by bending the crystals toroidally to minimize the geometrical aberrations [E. Förster, K. Gäbel, and I. Uschmann, Laser Particle Beams 9, 135 (1991)]. Comparison of the two line intensities requires a calibrated imaging system. Monochromatic images of fusion pellets driven with the GEKKO XII glass laser system are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The structural relaxation in (Ni,Fe)75Si10B15 metallic glasses has been studied by measuring resistivity changes and Mössbauer spectra. The sign and magnitude of resistivity changes due to the relaxation depend strongly on the Ni/Fe ratio. The isothermal resistivity changes fit well the nonlinear kinetic form, indicating that the fluctuation of local environments of Ni and Fe atoms is very large and Ni and Fe atoms in Ni-Fe-Si-B metallic glasses are mobile compared with Co and Fe atoms in Co-Fe-Si-B metallic glasses. The compositional dependence and kinetic parameters for reversible resistivity changes and Mössbauer spectra strongly support that the reversible structural relaxation corresponds to the reversible short-range ordering between Ni and Fe atoms.

Notizen: The physics element relevant to the fast ignitor in inertial confinement fusion has been extensively studied. Laser-hole boring with enormous photon pressures into overcritical densities was experimentally proved by density measurements with XUV laser probing. Ultra-intense laser interactions at a relativistic parameter regime were studied with a 50-TW glass laser system and a 100-TW glass laser system synchronized with a long pulse laser system. In the study of relativistic laser beam propagation in a 100-μm scale-length plasma, a special propagation mode (super-penetration mode) was observed, where the beam propagated into overdense regions close to the solid target surface. At the super-penetration mode, 20% of the laser energy converted to energetic electrons toward the target inside, while the coupling efficiency was 40% without the long scale-length plasmas. The high-density energetic electron transport and heating of solid material was also studied, indicating beamlike propagation of the energetic electrons in the solid target and effective heating of solid density ions with the electrons. Based on these basic experimental results, the heating of imploded plasma by short-pulse-laser light with three different ways of injecting the heating pulse has been studied. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fusion pellet implosion by laser-generated x rays was investigated by means of time-integrated spectroscopic measurements. Deuterium fuel was seeded with a small amount of Ar in order to determine the electron temperature and the density of the compressed fuel from, respectively, the emission intensity ratio and the broadening of the Lyβ (Ar17+1s-3p) and Heβ (Ar16+1s2-1s3p) lines. Comparison of the observed results with volume-averaged temperatures and densities obtained from one-dimensional (1-D) fluid-dynamic simulations showed large discrepancies at maximum compression. One possible explanation is that the fuel is stably compressed until the beginning of pusher deceleration by collision with a reflected shock wave from the pellet center, and that further compression during the deceleration phase is terminated in particular for heavy stagnation cases. Similar results were obtained for fusion output. Experimentally obtained neutron yields were close to those from the 1-D simulations at the beginning of the deceleration but a factor of 10–100 less than those expected at maximum compression. These results were examined in terms of shell disintegration in the acceleration phase and pusher–fuel mixing at the contact surface in the deceleration phase due to growth of initial perturbations of the pellet resulting from fluid instabilities. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Temperature and polarization characteristics of 1.55-μm-band LiNbO3 quasiphase-matched (QPM) wavelength converters have been studied by second-harmonic generation (SHG). It is found that the shift of the QPM wavelength is linearly proportional to temperature over the measured temperature range between 10 and 40 °C, with a temperature tolerance (corresponding to a 3 dB reduction in the QPM conversion efficiency) of greater than 10 °C for a 10-mm-long device. With respect to the angle θ of the injected fundamental light polarization direction, the SHG power changes as a function of sin4 θ, with a tolerance of over 60°. Theoretical explanations for the observed results are also presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The Si(111)-7×7 area surrounded by the Si(111)-(square root of)3×(square root of)3R30°-Ga region has been observed by scanning tunneling microscopy during the thermal desorption of Ga atoms at ∼600 °C and after the desorption. The 7×7 area exhibits triangular and strip patterns on the nanometer scale for the Si(111) substrates tilting toward the [112¯] and [1¯1¯2] directions, respectively. This is because faulted halves of the 7×7 reconstruction are adjacent to the (square root of)3×(square root of)3-Ga area on the boundary between the 7×7 and (square root of)3×(square root of)3-Ga areas during Ga desorption. It has been found that strip patterns with nanometer-scale precision are formed on the Si(111) substrates tilting toward the [1¯1¯2] direction. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
