Notes: Low angle laser light scattering and viscosity studies were made on dilute solution of fractions of polyurethane prepared from butandiol and hexamethylene diisocyanate. The intrinsic viscosities were correlated to molecular weights by the MARK-HOUWINK-SAKURADA equation. The values of the constants Km and a have been determined. In spite of the low refractive index increment of polyurethane in benzene, molecular weights as low as 4300 could be measured.

Notes: Guided by a recent molecular dynamics simulation study of mode I crack-tip environment in α-Fe using an embedded atom method potential, an activation analysis of the nucleation of a half-square dislocation loop from the tip of a tensile crack has been carried out based on the Rice and Thomson approach [Philos. Mag. 29, 78 (1974)]. The effects of elastic softening due to stress and temperature as well as the nonlinear stress distribution around the crack are introduced by incorporating the simulation results self-consistently into the analysis, reducing the previously overestimated activation barrier by a factor of over 15.

Notes: Smoking has been associated, on epidemiologic grounds, with an increased risk of cervical neoplasia. We have investigated this association, using laboratory-based methods. A 32P post-labeling assay was performed on 97 cervical biopsies to detect and measure DNA adducts (additional products formed by the covalent binding of potential chemical carcinogens to nuclear DNA). The specimens were taken from both normal cervices as well as the histologically normal regions of cervices with invasive and intraepithelial neoplasia. A detailed smoking history was obtained from each patient and correlated with an assay of cotinine level in urine. Characteristic smoking-related DNA adducts were found, and a significant difference in their levels was detected between current and non-current smokers (P = 0.017, Mann-Whitney test). There was also a highly significant trend in median adduct levels between the three tissue types (P 〈 0.002). We conclude that the finding of smoking-related cervical DNA damage is suggestive of a causal association between smoking and cervical neoplasia.

Notes: Objective To estimate whether flow cytometric indices provide independent measures of prognosis or predict response to prophylactic progestogens in endometrial cancer.Design Endometrial tumour specimens were retrieved and analysed by flow cytometry from 257 women who had been randomly allocated in a previous trial to receive prophylactic progestogen in addition to conventional therapy for endometrial carcinoma.Setting Fourteen district and two teaching hospitals in West Yorkshire.Subjects Women developing primary endometrial cancer between 1975 and 1983.Main outcome measures Tumour ploidy status and proliferative indices and the relation of these to tumour stage and grade, to prognosis and to response to progestogens. Results Ploidy status and proliferative indices were related to tumour stage, grade and patient survival but were not independent predictors of survival. They did not predict patients who would respond to progestogens although there was a nonsignificant trend towards patients with diploid tumours surviving longer after progestogen treatment. Conclusions Flow cytometry adds little to established prognostic indicators for endometrial cancer.

Notes: Summary. This report analyses 1234 patients with CIN and noncondylomatous wart virus infection (NCWVI) managed by CO2 laser ablation in the Regional Department of Gynaecological Oncology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead from 1979 to 1983. Thirty-five patients (3%) were lost to follow-up. Of the 1157 patients currently under review and with at least 1 year of follow-up, 44 (3·8%) were laser treatment failures. This group is analysed and the results compared with other series.

Notes: 1 Anthraquinone stimulant cathartics, such as emodin, are believed to increase the rate of contraction of ileum tissue in vitro via multiple mechanisms. The aim of this study was to probe the effects of emodin on acetylcholine (ACh)-induced contraction of the rat isolated ileum preparation. 2 Ileal sections were incubated in Tyrode's solution and responses to methacholine, ACh and emodin obtained in the absence and presence of the muscarinic antagonist atropine and the choline uptake inhibitor hemicholinium (HC-3). Depletion of endogenous ACh in the presence of HC-3 was achieved by construction of an ACh dose–response curve, using exogenous ACh, prior to re-testing the effects of emodin in the presence of HC-3. 3 Emodin caused dose-dependent tissue contraction that was abolished by inclusion of atropine (1 μm) in the buffer. Atropine (1 μm) antagonized the response caused by methacholine. 4 Incubation of tissues with HC-3 (1 and 10 μm) reduced the maximum response caused by emodin by 45% and 71% respectively, but had no effect on ACh-induced tissue contraction. 5 These data suggest that, emodin causes contraction of the ileum by triggering the release of endogenous ACh which acts on muscarinic receptors to cause contraction of the rat isolated ileum preparation.
