    Notes: The solar H Lyman-α line is, through O2 photodissociation, an important source of O(1D) production throughout the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. To ascertain the energy balance in this altitude region, it is necessary to know the O(1D) yield across the solar H Lyman-α feature, since H Lyman-α absorption by O2 at ∼80 km accounts for a substantial fraction of the solar radiation absorbed in the mesosphere. An earlier laboratory study had provided a value of 0.44±0.05 for the O(1D) yield at the center of the solar H Lyman-α line, where the profile shows a minimum in intensity due to strong self-reversal of the line. Using tunable laser radiation, we have determined the O(1D) yield from O2 photodissociation across the entire H Lyman-α profile from 121.2 to 121.9 nm, at a spectral resolution of 0.0015 nm (1 cm−1). The results reveal a strongly wavelength-dependent window in the O(1D) yield, the origins of which are explained using calculations based on a coupled-channel Schrödinger-equations model of the O2 photodissociation. The calculations, which show significant isotopic dependence near H Lyman-α, predict that the depth of the quantum-yield window will increase significantly as the temperature is lowered. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We calculate photoelectron distributions obtained from the two-photon pump/probe ionization of Na2. A first ultrashort pulse prepares a vibrational wave packet in the (2)1∑u+ electronic state. The dynamics is probed by time-delayed ionization caused by a chirped femtosecond laser pulse. Time-resolved photoelectron spectra are determined for different chirp parameters. It is shown that the spectra are very sensitive to the choice of the chirp. In particular the width can be selectively modified and the in- or outward motion of the wave packet can be distinguished by using an appropriately chirped electric field. An analytical expression for the photoelectron spectrum explains its dependence on the chirp parameter. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Objective To compare the effects of forceps delivery and spontaneous delivery on pelvic floor functions in nulliparous women.Design A longitudinal prospective study with investigations during the first pregnancy, 10 weeks and 10 months after delivery.Setting Antenatal clinic in a teaching hospital.Population One hundred and seven patients aged 28.4 years, divided into those with forceps (n= 25) or spontaneous (n= 82) delivery.Methods Investigations with a questionnaire, clinical examination, assessment of bladder neck behaviour, urethral sphincter function, intra-vaginal/intra-anal pressures during pelvic floor contractions.Results The incidence of stress urinary incontinence was similar in both groups at 9 weeks (32%vs 21%, P= 0.3) and 10 months (20%vs 15%, P= 0.6) after delivery, as was the incidence of faecal incontinence (9 weeks: 8%vs 4%, P= 0.9; 10 months: 4%vs 5%, P= 1) and the decreased sexual response at 10 months (12%vs 18%, P= 0.6). Bladder neck behaviour, urethral sphincter function and intra-vaginal and intra-anal pressures were also similar in the two groups. However, 10 months after delivery, the incidence of a weak pelvic floor (20%vs 6%, P= 0.05) and the decrease in intra-anal pressure between the pre- and post-delivery values (−17±28 cm H2O vs 3±31 cm H2O, P= 0.04) were significantly greater in the forceps-delivered women.Conclusions Forceps delivery is not responsible for a higher incidence of pelvic floor complaints or greater changes in bladder neck behaviour or urethral sphincter functions. However, patients with forceps delivery have a significantly greater decrease in intra-anal pressure and a greater incidence of a weak pelvic floor.

    Notes: A 2-year-old girl with Moya Moya disease who had relapsing cerebrovascular strokes presented with loose skin folds, ‘chicken’ skin appearance and perforating elastosis serpiginosa-like lesions in the genitocrural region. Histologically, calcified material perforating the epidermis and adjacent short curled and mineralized elastic fibres suggested a variant of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE). As PXE is known to be caused by various mutations in the transmembrane transporter ABCC6 gene, we hypothesized that a novel ABCC6 mutation may underlie this unique combination of PXE and elastopathic vascular damage. Therefore, the complete ABCC6 coding region of the patient and her parents was screened for genetic alterations. No bona fide disease-causing mutation of ABCC6 could be found in the child and in her parents. However, two novel allelic amino acid substitutions (Arg1273Lys and Glu1293Lys; exon 27) were found in the girl and her father, localized in close proximity to the region that codes for the functionally critical second nucleotide-binding fold of ABCC6. Although a causal involvement of these amino acid substitutions could not be proven based on this study, both heterozygote substitutions may possibly have interacted with other undetected recessive maternal ABCC6 changes in the child. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an association between early-onset PXE and severe Moya Moya syndrome possibly related to ABCC6 changes.

    Notes: Metoprolol, a widely prescribed β-adrenergic receptor blocker, has occasionally been associated with a diversity of cutaneous reactions. We present a 79-year-old male patient with erosive lichen planus (LP) on the feet and hands who was successfully treated with topical tacrolimus. Six months after the lesions had been cured the patient received the β-receptor blocker metoprolol for the treatment of hypertonus. Within only 2 weeks of metoprolol intake the erosive lesions on the palms and feet recurred. After discontinuation of the drug and repetitive topical treatment with tacrolimus a complete remission of the lesions could be achieved. The recurrence of erosive LP probably secondary to metoprolol and the therapeutic success of topical tacrolimus in the treatment of LP are discussed.

    Notes: In this study a method was designed to assess non-destructively the type of UV-screening compounds present in the leaf epidermis. The method is based on the recording and calculation of the ratio of UV-excitation spectra of chlorophyll fluorescence (FER) from the adaxial and abaxial sides of bifacial leaves, or from older and younger segments of monocotyledonous leaves. The logarithm of this ratio (logFER) matched the absorption spectrum of the UV-absorbers present in the leaf, as confirmed by its overlap with the absorption spectrum of the methanolic extract of the leaf or of the isolated epidermis. By using the logFER approach, it was possible to demonstrate that the concentration but not the classes of compounds present in the epidermis that are responsible for UV-screening is affected by the side and the age of the leaves. In contrast, measurements from the leaves of seven dicots and one monocot indicated large difference in the classes of these compounds between species. Finally, it was shown that the logFER in the UV is independent of the emission wavelength, and that the method can be used for quantitative measurements. This method expands to the spectral domain the use of ChlF for the estimation of the leaf epidermal transmittance.
