Notes: Abstract The new species, Hyphozyma roseonigra, characterized by pink colonies, budding cells with minute annellated zones and brown, septate hyphae, is described. It is non-fermentative, shows no colouration with Diazonium Blue B, and has an ascomycete-type cell wall ultrastructure. A key to the accepted species and varieties of Hyphozyma is given.

Notes: Abstract 72 Strains belonging to 44 species of ascomycetous black yeasts were analyzed for their coenzyme Q systems. Prevalent were Q-10 and dihydrogenated Q-10 systems. Members of the Dothidealean suborder Dothideineae have Q-10 (H2), while those belonging to the suborder Pseudosphaeriineae mostly have Q-10. The anamorph genus Exophiala Carmichael and the teleomorph genus Capronia Sacc. seem to be heterogenous.

Notes: Abstract The genusTrichosporon was revised using characters of morphology, ultrastructure, physiology, ubiquinone systems, mol% G+C of DNA, DNA/DNA reassociations and 26S ribosomal RNA partial sequences. A total of 101 strains was used, including all available type and authentic cultures of previously described taxa. Nineteen taxa could be distinguished, 15 of which having Q-9 coenzyme systems and 4 having Q-10. Sixteen previously described names were reduced to synonymy. One new species was described. The genus is characterized by the presence of arthroconidia. Few species possess further diagnostic morphological characters, such as the presence of appressoria, macroconidia or meristematic conidiation. The septa of two species were found to be non-perforate, while those of the remaining species contained dolipores at variable degrees of differentiation, with or without vesicular or tubular parenthesomes. All species were able to assimilate a large number of carbon compounds; visible CO2 production was absent. The genus was found to be fairly homogeneous on the basis of a phylogenetic analysis of partial 26S rRNA sequences, with the exception ofT. pullulans which proved to be unrelated. Most taxa were found to occupy well-defined ecological niches. Within the group of taxa isolated from humans, a distinction found be made between those involved in systemic mycoses and those which mainly caused public or non-public white piedras, respectively. One species was consistently associated with animals, while others came mainly from soil or water. One species was mesophilic and another psychrophilic.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Despite the availability of modern antimycotics, which produce high cure rates in early infections, the therapy of advanced chromoblastomycosis is still unsatisfactory. An initial chromoblastomycosis caused by a hitherto unidentified species of the genus Phialophora was diagnosed in a 46-year-old teacher. The organism was isolated twice at an interval of 6 weeks from a partly psoriasiform, partly verrucous lesion on the 4th toe. The infection was apparently acquired 4 years ago during a holiday at Cape Verde. Treatment with itraconazole (Sempera), 200 mg/day, and amphotericin B (Ampho-Moronal) cream for 6 weeks initially resulted in rapid regression. However, 4 weeks after cessation of therapy, the Phialophora species was cultured again from skin scrapings. Complete healing was achieved after re-treatment with itraconazole for 20 weeks at the same dosage in combination with topical amorolfine and local hyperthermia. Until now, no relapse has occured. The present case demonstrates that this rare disease, which mainly occurs as a traumatic mycosis in the rural population of tropical regions, must be included in the differential diagnosis of psoriasiform or verrucous skin lesions and also included in the list of diseases which may be acquired while on vacation in exotic locations.

Notes: Abstract A new species of the genusEmbellisia (Hyphomycetes, Dematiaceae) was isolated from bulbs and leaves of various cultivars ofHyacinthus, Scilla andFreesia. It is characterized by dark, multiseptate conidia which are somewhat pointed at the apex and variable in shape and size. In contrast to other species of the genus it rarely forms chlamydospores in pure culture. The fungus was found on several locations in the Netherlands, and is also known in the USA and Germany. Inoculation experiments on several cultivars ofHyacinthus orientalis resulted in a high percentage of affected plants.

Notes: Abstract A 13-year-old Moroccan boy in The Netherlands developed fever and a lesion resembling ecthyma gangrenosum on the abdomen during cytostatic drug treatment for a lymphoblastic B-cell lymphoma.Scytalidium dimidiatum was cultured from blood and the abdominal skin lesion. The patient was successfully treated with amphotericin B. The fungusScytalidium dimidiatum is a fairly common plant pathogen in tropical and subtropical countries and is known to cause dermatomycoses in humans in these areas. This case demonstrates that it is necessary to be aware that immigrants from these areas can import their own fungal flora, some members of which may cause life-threatening disease in the case of patients with immune suppression.

Notes: Abstract The case is described of a 42-year-old patient with acute myeloid leukemia who received two courses of chemotherapy complicated by prolonged bone marrow depression. He was admitted to hospital with fever, hepatosplenomegaly and bilateral nodular pulmonary infiltrates. After admission diffuse cutaneous skin nodules, and hypodense lesions in the hemispheres and cerebellum developed. Cultures of cerebrospinal fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, skin biopsy specimens and blood revealedScedosporium prolificans, indicative of disseminated mycosis. Treatment with amphotericin B and fluconazole was unsuccessful and the patient died within five days after admission. Features that may enhance early recognition ofScedosporium prolificans infection by both clinicians and microbiologists, as well as options in the treatment of infection with this fungal agent are discussed.
