    Notes: The onset of a tooth vibration signal with a mini acceleration pickup attached to the skin on the forehead was delayed by 0.1788 ms on average after the actual tooth impact. When the signal was recorded at the zygomatic arch, the delay time was 0.1008 ms on average, which was significantly shorter than that obtained from the forehead (P 〈 0.001). The difference due to a transposition of the vibrated tooth was also smaller (0.025 〈 P 〈 0.05) and had almost no effect on the intensities of the tooth flipping force. The delay time was even more prolonged when a poor frequency specification pickup and/or low pass filter were applied.

    Notes: Abstract The pH in the reversed micellar system of di(ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (Aerosol OT, AOT) / phosphate buffer solutions/octane was determined by a P-NMR technique, and pHs in the reversed micelles containing buffer solutions other than the phosphate buffer solution were measured by the spectrophotometric method with the aid of Phenol Red. pHs in reversed micelles were found to be substantially determined by the buffer capacity of buffer solutions solubilized into the systems. By means of both the methods, pKa of Phenol Red in the systems was found to be 7.7, which is almost consistent with that in water. Analysis of Na-NMR spectra indicates that the mobility of the sodium ion of AOT is independent of the molar ratio of water to AOT when the ratio is above 7 and is restricted strongly by the interaction with the sulfonate group of AOT. The relationship between pH and the mobility of the sodium ion was discussed on the basis of the data of Na-NMR spectra.

    Notes: Abstract The speckle pattern observed at the output end of a multimode fibre is closely related to the modal noise. In this paper, the average contrast of the speckle pattern is studied as a function of the radial position in the output end plane for three kinds of misalignment of the incident beam, i.e. defocusing, axial misalignment and angular misalignment. It is found that a variation of the speckle contrast is very sensitive to all kinds of misalignment of the incident beam and that its varying form strongly depends on the kind of misalignment of the incident beam. The speckle contrast at the centre of the output end plane is also examined as a function of the magnitude of misalignment. It is found that the contrast increases from a minimum value in the correct alignment to a certain saturated value with an increase of misalignment.

    Notes: Abstract The intensity variation of a speckle pattern on the exit end face of graded-index multimode fibres with a misaligned fibre-to-fibre joint is experimentally studied from its first-order statistics of the average contrast and the probability density function for two different kinds of longitudinal and axial misalignments. It is found that the speckle contrast varies as a function of the radial position with a peak which shifts towards the periphery of the speckle pattern with an increase of the joint loss. A varying form of the speckle contrast also depends on the type of misalignment. The probability density function of the speckle intensity variation is also found to vary as a function of the radial position but to scarcely vary as a function of the joint loss.

    Notes: Summary Two new glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) variants associated with chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia were discovered. G6PD Kobe was found in a 16-year-old male associated with hemolytic crisis after upper respiratory infection. The enzyme activity of the variant was about 22% of that of the normal enzyme. The main enzymatic characteristics were slower than normal anodal electrophoretic mobility, high Km G6P, increased thermal-instability, an acidic pH optimum, and an extremely increased affinity for the substrate analogue, galactose 6-phosphate (Gal-6P). G6PD Sapporo was found in a 3-year-old male associated with drug-induced hemolysis. The enzyme activity was extremely low, being 3.6% of normal. In addition, this variant showed high Ki NADPH and thermal-instability. G6PD Kobe utilized the artificial substrate Gal-6P effectively as compared with the common natural substrate, glucose 6-phosphate. In G6PD Sapporo, NADPH could not exert the effect of product inhibition. The structural changes of these variants are expected to occur at the portions inducing conformational changes of the substrate binding site of the enzyme.

    Notes: Summary Two new glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) variants were discovered in Japan. The first, found in a 9-year-old male, was associated with chronic hemolysis and hemolytic crises after upper respiratory infections. The enzyme activity of the variant was 2.9% of normal. The patient's G6PD showed an increased utilization of substrate analogue, deamino-NADP, and thermal instability. The second variant occurred in a 7-year-old male with druginduced hemolysis. The main enzymatic characteristics were reduced enzyme activity, being 6.4% of normal, faster-thannormal anodal electrophoretic mobility, slightly high Michaelis constant for glucose-6-phosphate, thermal instability, and biphasic pH optima. Enzymatic properties of these variants allowed each to be distinguished from previously reported variants. The first variant was designated Gd (-) Gifu and the other, Gd (-) Fukuoka.

    Notes: Summary A new glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) variant associated with chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia was reported. The patient, a 6-year-old Japanese male, was noticed to have hemolytic anemia soon after birth, and a diagnosis of G6PD deficiency was made at the age of 2. He had episodes of hemolytic crisis several times after upper respiratory infection. G6PD activity of the patient was 5.5% of normal. The enzymatic characteristics were examined when he was 5 years old, and his G6PD showed faster-than-normal electrophoretic mobility, low Km G6P, high Km NADP, low Ki NADPH, normal utilization of substrate analogues, heat instability, and a normal pH optimum curve. From these results, this was considered to be a new variant and was designated G6PD Nagano. Infection-induced hemolysis and chronic hemolytic anemia seem to be due to markedly impaired enzyme activity and thermal instability.
