    Notizen: The Bi-(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor has been fabricated into tapes without sheathing and into multifilamentary wires and tapes with Ag sheathing. Metallurgical studies as well as measurements have been made for them. Tape specimens prepared by combination and repetition of cold work (or cold press) and sintering showed critical current density Jc as high as 5×103 A/cm2 at 77 K with good reproducibility and reliability, although these specimens are sufficiently thick (0.5–1.0 mm). (Generally, Jc at zero field is inversely proportional to thickness.) For these tape specimens (with Cu sheath), sintering and Jc measurement were performed after the Cu sheath was removed. X-ray analysis showed that most of these tape specimens consist purely of high-Tc phase (∼107 K). In these specimens, the c axis tends to align well. This c axis alignment as well as compacting effect may be a cause of the enhancement in Jc . On the other hand, the tape specimens cold-worked and sintered only once (not repeated) showed Jc as small as only 102 A/cm2 with the c axis showing no sign of alignment. A 1330-filament Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O wire with a Ag sheath has been successfully fabricated. This multifilamentary wire shows critical temperature Tc of ∼105 K. A multifilamentary tape specimen fabricated by a combination of cold work and sintering showed Jc of 1.05×103 A/cm2 at 77 K.

    Notizen: 180 MeV Cu11+ irradiation was done on the c-axis grain oriented Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 tapes. Irradiation enhanced hysteresis in dc magnetization curves, especially in high magnetic fields. The irreversibility line can be moved to higher field by irradiation. Transport Jc is also enhanced by the irradiation of the small fluences. The irradiation produced large (∼100 nm) and small (∼5 nm) defects. They are effective for flux pinning in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8.

    Notizen: Anisotropy in Jc with respect to field direction for a textured Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Ox tape was measured at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Anisotropy at 4.2 K was small enough for practical applications in fields up to 25 T. However, the anisotropy increases rapidly with increasing temperature. Angular dependence of Jc shows a history effect, which is characteristic of ceramic superconductors.

    Notizen: 180-MeV Cu11+ and Br11+ irradiations and 3-MeV electron irradiation were carried out on textured Bi-2212 tapes and the effects of irradiation on the microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated. Ion irradiation, which creates linear tracks, is very effective in increasing both intragrain Jc and irreversibility field at temperatures below 60 K when field is parallel to the tracks. At 60 K, an order of magnitude higher Birr is obtained for both Cu11+ and Br11+ irradiations. Electron irradiation which creates point defects, on the other hand, is not as effective as ion irradiation except for low temperatures of ∼4.2 K. Apparent pinning potential energy U0 was increased by ion irradiation from ∼15 to ∼40 meV at 41.8 K, while U0 was unchanged by the electron irradiation. However, even U0 of the ion-irradiated sample is still small. This small U0 increases flux creep at temperatures above 60 K and makes ion irradiation less effective. A small increase of transport Jc was obtained by both ion and electron irradiation for small fluences. However, a significant decrease of transport Jc occurred at fluences which optimize intragrain Jc.

    Notizen: Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (2212) and Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (2223) superconductors were fabricated into silver-sheathed tapes by cold rolling and sintering. The resulting samples are compared in terms of microstructural alignment, critical current density, and strain dependence. Although both samples show good grain alignment, that of the 2212 phase is superior due to partial melting during heat treatment. This microstructural superiority is reflected in superior Jc as well. The single-filament and multifilament 2212 tapes have Jc (approximately-greater-than) 5 × 104 A/cm2 and Jc (approximately-greater-than) 1.5 × 104 A/cm2 at 20 T, respectively. Each material shows a similar dependence of Jc upon strain, with the 2223 phase exhibiting slightly more degradation. Furthermore, multifilamentary tapes were less affected by strain than single-filament tapes. A multifilamentary tape at 4.2 K, 0.5 T showed only a weak dependence upon strain, indicating that the strain dependence of the Bi system at low temperature may not be severe.

    Notizen: Discrete tones generated from the interaction of high-speed jets with solid boundaries are investigated experimentally. Measurement of far-field pressure waves and Schlieren flow visualization were conducted. Emphasis is placed upon the generation mechanism of a discrete tone that is generated when a circular cylinder is placed in a jet at a high Reynolds number. This discrete tone was observed to be generated for jet exit Mach numbers greater than 0.6 and distances from the nozzle lip to the cylinder less than about eight times the nozzle diameter. By the Schlieren flow visualization, it is confirmed that this discrete tone is radiated from the jet by a strong feedback resonance. When an eddy (a ring vortex) interacts with the cylinder, an acoustic pulse is emitted with a strong directional peak in the upstream direction. The acoustic pulse propagates outside the jet and, upon reaching the nozzle lip, forces the generation of a new eddy. As the new eddy approaches the cylinder it regains the strength of the original eddy by extracting energy from the potential core of the jet and so maintains the cycle.

    Notizen: A neutron diagnostic system has been installed on the MTX tokamak. The diagnostic will be used to measure both the peak ion temperature and the ion response to intense free-electron laser microwave pulses (140–250 GHz, 1–8 GW, 20–50 ns). High-speed measurements are important for studying the intense microwave absorption process. A plastic scintillator with a polymer-clad silica bundle is used for fast time response detection. Five-channel proportional counters and fission counters are used to monitor the neutron yield for a source strength from 108 to 1013 n/s. This sytem has been calibrated with a 252Cf neutron source in the vacuum vessel and is being tested using the MTX ohmic plasma.

    Notizen: A system for measuring the transitional dielectric constant of a ferroelectric liquid-crystal (FLC) medium aligned in a sandwich cell has been developed. The system developed in this work is shown to be capable of detecting the average molecular motion of the FLC during the course of the switching in terms of the measurement of the dielectric constant in the soft mode at 40 kHz by applying a triangular-voltage wave form ranging from 0.1 to 100 Hz to induce the Goldstone mode. This method is more accurate compared to the conventional method based on the observation of the switching current, since the latter usually accompanies the disturbances originating from ionic current, the charge/discharge as a capacitor, and electrical noise.

    Notizen: Design considerations and experimental results are described for a charge exchange neutral particle mass and energy analyzer for JT-60, which analyzes H, D, and He simultaneously up to a maximum energy of 110 keV. The analyzer has separately a 180° deflection magnet for momentum analysis and an electrostatic deflector for mass analysis. The way to control the effect of the electric fringe fields in order to expand the detectable energy range is studied by numerical simulation. The deflector is then designed, made of two triangular plates and three additional electrodes for the control of the fringe fields. The effect of the deflector is demonstrated experimentally. Energy and mass resolution and the relation between the incident ion energy and the magnetic field strength are measured. The results of the calibration experiments agree with the designed value.

    Notizen: The Bi-based oxide superconducting tapes containing high-Tc (Tc=110 K) and low-Tc(Tc=85 K) phases were prepared by the powder metallurgy method using an Ag sheath, and Jc was measured at 77 and 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 30 T. A grain-oriented microstructure with the c axes perpendicular to the tape surface was obtained for the tapes with a high-Tc phase by applying a combination of cold rolling and sintering. Jc of the high-Tc tape was significantly improved by this grain orientation. However, large anisotropy in Jc with respect to the magnetic field direction was observed for these textured tapes. For the low-Tc tapes, it was difficult to obtain a grain-oriented microstructure by the cold rolling and sintering process. However, Jc at 4.2 K of the nontextured low-Tc tape is as high as that of the grain-oriented high-Tc tape. Typical Jc values at 4.2 K were above 104A/cm2 at 12 T for both high- and low-Tc tapes. Jc at 4.2 K of the Bi-based tapes is much less sensitive to the magnetic field than the conventional metallic superconductors, which indicates that the Bi-based oxide is a good candidate for the high-field superconducting magnet.
