Notes: The frequency of two newly defined HLA antigens, HLA CT7 and DMA, was found to be greatly increased in patients with psoriasis. These two antigens and those previously found to be associated with the disease, B13, BW16 and BW17, frequently occurred together. The disease may be primarily associated with HLA DMA, or with the HLA haplotypes CT7-B13/W16/W17-DMA.

Notes: The characteristic properties of noncritically phase-matched frequency doubling in KTiOPO4 have been investigated using ∼1 μm radiation from a Styryl-13 dye laser. Noncritically phase-matched type II second-harmonic generation was found to occur at 994.3 nm. The unusually wide angle, temperature, and wavelength tolerances observed for this nonlinear process are attractive for the design of practical blue-green laser sources. A special strained-layer InGaAs diode laser was fabricated to operate at 994 nm and generation of blue-green 497 nm radiation by noncritically phase-matched frequency doubling was demonstrated.

Notes: Thin films of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) have been evaluated as quarter-wave, antireflection dielectric coatings for application in magneto-optic data storage media. The films, which are produced by plasma deposition from methane, have low optical absorption at 830 nm wavelength, high refractive index (n≈2.1), and provide enhancement of the polar Kerr rotation (θk) when used in conjunction with rare-earth–transition-metal (RE–TM), TbFe, or TbFeCo alloys. The chemical stability, inertness, and homogeneity of the carbon films makes them effective diffusion barriers to oxygen or water vapor and thus provides excellent protection against environmental oxidation of the RE–TM layer. Dynamic disk performance data show improved write sensitivity of the media when used with a-C:H dielectric layers.

Notes: Abstract: Several species of cetaceans naturally slough visible quantities of skin. We have investigated the prospect of using this material as a viable alternative to the use of biopsy darts for the collection of samples for molecular analysis. Pieces of skin were collected from free-ranging individuals of three different species—the humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae), sperm (Physeter macrocephalus) and right whales (Eubalaena glacialis). DNA was extracted from 11 pieces of sloughed skin and DNA “fingerprint” profiles prepared. All samples contained DNA of both sufficient quality and quantity for genetic analysis. The applicability of this approach is discussed generally in relation to answering problems about the population structure and breeding systems of cetaceans.

Notes: Kelp gulls at Península Valdés, Argentina, have recently developed the habit of feeding on pieces of skin and blubber that they gouge from the backs of southern right whales. In response, the whales flinch violently, submerge, and swim rapidly away underwater. The level of harassment in 1995 was almost five times higher than when first studied in 1984 by Thomas (1988). In 1995, 67% of attacks were aimed at large white lesions on the whales' backs. The proportion of whales with lesions increased from 0.01 in 1974 to 0.32 in 1990. Mother-calf pairs that were attacked traveled at medium and fast speeds for 3.1 h per day, compared to 0.8 h for undisturbed pairs. Mother-calf pairs are estimated to spend approximately 24% of their daylight hours in states of gullinduced disturbance. Little food is available at Península Valdés, so mothers must rely on blubber reserves to support their calves' growth, behavioral development, and migration to the feeding grounds. Even when undisturbed by gulls, mothers often curtail their calves' play and nursing bouts, suggesting that their energy reserves are limited. Increasingly intense harassment by gulls may therefore compromise calf development and might even induce right whales to abandon Península Valdés for other calving grounds.

Notes: 1. Historical nutrient changes in Grasmere were investigated using a 300-year record derived from six sediment cores. One core was investigated at high resolution for diatoms, total sedimentary phosphorus, and loss-on-ignition (LOI), and was dated using 210Pb and 137Cs. Six other cores were scanned for magnetic susceptibility, diatoms and LOI to confirm the stratigraphic integrity of the primary record.2. A rise in nutrient levels occurred after 1855 AD. This event was marked by a shift away from benthic diatom assemblages and a rise in Asterionella formosa. The onset of eutrophication from 1855 corresponds to the expansion of the local and tourist population in the area.3. The replacement of A. formosa with Cyclotella spp. ca 1945–65 indicates reduced nutrient loads, possibly because of enhanced flushing brought about by the seasonal rainfall distribution.4. After 1965 a step-wise increase in both absolute and relative amounts of Asterionella was found. High sedimentary P and diatom inferred TP confirmed the high nutrient loading of the lake. Nutrient increase is attributable to problems with the Grasmere village sewage system and the installation of a wastewater treatment works (WwTW) on the River Rothay in 1971. Modifications to the WwTW in 1982 caused an initial improvement, but have not led to a full recovery to pre-1965 ecological conditions.5. The diatom record indicates a further improvement after 1990 by a return toward Achnanthes minutissima.6. The sedimentary archive of sensitive sites provides important benchmarks against which to judge the attainment of water quality targets.

Notes: Abstract: Movements of southern right whales between Gough Island and South Africa, and between Argentina and Tristan da Cunha, southern Brazil, and South Georgia are documented through matching of six photoidentified individuals. These include the resighting of a male in a mid-oceanic locality some 4,424 km away from (and 11 yr after) its last sighting in a coastal area where it had been seen in six of the preceding eight years, a female photographed in mid-Atlantic resighted with a calf in a coastal nursery area 2,769 km away, resightings of females with calves in different nursery areas 2,051 km apart in different years, and the first example of a link between a coastal nursery area and a feeding ground in high latitudes. The possible implications of these movements for estimates of calving interval and survival rate based on resightings in coastal waters are discussed. The potential for intermingling between populations on either side of the South Atlantic seems greater than was previously considered likely from a comparison of animals photographed in coastal waters.
