    Notizen: A method which combines thermal and plasma dissociation of a methane/hydrogen gas mixture for low-pressure chemical vapor deposition of diamond is described. A hot, thin-walled, refractory metal cathode is used to generate a high-current, low-voltage discharge. The substrates are located on the anode and immersed in the plasma emanating from the cathode tip. No auxiliary substrate heating is employed. Polycrystalline diamond particles and films are obtained on silicon (100) and molybdenum substrates at growth rates of 1–3 μm/h.

    Notizen: Well-faceted diamond crystals and polycrystalline films have been produced by low-pressure, hot-filament-activated, chemical vapor deposition with the use of methane/ hydrogen gas. The effects on growth and morphology of varying filament and reactor tube materials as well as tube diameter are reported. Tungsten and tantalum filaments, operated under similar conditions, produced diamonds at essentially the same growth rates (typically ∼2 μm/h) and with similar crystallographic properties. Platinum filaments produced only graphitic deposits. Diamond growth and morphology appeared not to be influenced by changing the reactor wall material from fused quartz to Al2O3 or Pyrex or by varying the tube diameter.

    Notizen: We report here the first clear demonstration of intensity-dependent phase shift due to electronic nonlinearity in a nonlinear polymer waveguide in which propagation distances over 5 cm have been achieved with total attenuation of ∼1.2 cm−1 . Intensity-dependent coupling angle, intensity-dependent coupling efficiency, and limiter action behavior have been observed in the polyamic acid waveguide using grating excitation with 400 fs, 80 ps, and 10 ns pulses. A nonlinear grating coupler analysis identifies the subpicosecond and picosecond processes with electronic nonlinearity, but the dominant effect in the nanosecond experiment is due to thermal nonlinearity derived from weak absorptions. The magnitude and sign of n2 of electronic nonlinearity are measured.

    Notizen: Cheek pouches of male Syrian golden hamsters were topically treated with a single dose of TPA (.5 μg), calcium ionophore A23187 (75 μgs) or Sn-1,2-dioctanoylglycerol (DiC8) (500 μg) dissolved in 0.25 ml acetone. Acetone-treated animals served as controls. After 48 h the mitotic index for the control group was 1.1 ± 0.1 per 1 mm of the basement membrane length. All the test congeners exhibited higher mitotic indices than controls: TPA (4.8 ± 0.4), A23187 (3.9 ± 0.3), DiC8 (2.1 ± 0.2). All groups exhibited an increase in the epithelial thickness manifested by cellular hyperplasia. The treatment of the pouches with the anti-inflammatory agent fluocinolone acetonide inhibited the milogenic and hyperplasiogenic affects on the epithelium induced by the various test chemicals. These studies indicate a possible role of calcium-phospholipid dependent protein kinase (protein kinase C) in the mediation of oral epithelial cell proliferation.

    Notizen: Summary Seventy-six uncomplicated hypertensive patients treated in General Practice, whose seated diastolic blood pressure (Phase V) (dBP) remained ≥95 mmHg after a minimum of 4 weeks treatment with metoprolol 50 mg b.i.d. as antihypertensive monotherapy, were randomized to receive the selective ‘calcium antagonist’ felodipine 5 mg b.i.d. or hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg b.i.d. in addition to metroprolol 50 mg b.i.d. The trial duration was 8 weeks, the dose of the felodipine or hydrochlorothiazide being doubled after 4 weeks if ‘control’ of BP (dBP 〈90 mmHg) was not achieved on the initial doses. Over the trial period of 8 weeks, felodipine reduced dBP from 102 to 85 mmHg and hydrochlorothiazide from 101 to 91 mmHg; the dBP reduction in the felodipine group was greater than that in the hydrochlorothiazide group (17 vs 9 mmHg) and the attained dBP lower in the felodipine group. About half of the patients in each group required the higher dose. Both regimes were effective and well tolerated. In the dosages used, felodipine was a slightly more effective antihypertensive drug than hydrochlorothiazide when added to metoprolol. There was no apparent difference in the tolerability of the two regimes.

    Notizen: Summary Three sets of different formulae expressed as functions of dynamic elastic constants of rock and some design parameters involved in a buried explosion are derived explicitly for the prediction of peak particle velocity (PPV) and peak air pressure (PAP). Separate equations are derived to estimate PPV and PAP for inside, outside, and at the boundary of the crater zone. The equations incorporate the physical parameters including (i) longitudinal wave velocity, (ii) shear wave velocity, (iii) density of rock, (iv) characteristic impedance of air, (v) detonation pressure of explosive, (vi) depth of hole, (vii) radius of hole, (viii) distance of the measuring transducer. Suggested equations are tested for a few hard and medium-hard rocks. Characteristic features and important conclusions are described.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung In einer pluralistischen Gesellschaft ist mehr Sensitivität in der Auswahl von Lehrstilen nötig. In diesem Bericht werden Belege berücksichtigt, die zeigen, daß künftige Reaktionen auf Lehr- und Lernrichtungen bereits in den Vorschuljahren durch das soziokulturelle Umfeld des Kindes geprägt werden. Die in Großbritannien üblichen Lehrmethoden gehen jedoch von den in einer weißen mittelständischen Kultur vorherrschenden kognitiven Stilen aus, die für Kinder anderer kultureller Hintergründer ungeeignet sind. Reagieren die einen nur auf kooperative, soziale Methoden, handeln die anderen analytisch und kompetitiv. Der Verfasser vertritt die Auffassung, daß sowohl das Curriculum als auch die Methodologie und die Materialien allen Kindern erlauben sollten, sich mit dem Erziehungsprozeß zu identifizieren und schließlich bikognitiv zu agieren. Lehrer sollten daher den Umfang der kognitiven und lernbezogenen Stilrichtungen ihrer Schüler erkennen können.
    Kurzfassung: Résumé Une société pluraliste nécessite une sensibilité plus grande lors de la sélection de modes d'enseignement. Le présent article examine les faits qui montrent que les réactions futures au style d'enseignement et d'apprentissage sont déterminées au cours de la période préscolaire par l'environnement socio-culturel de l'enfant. Les méthodes d'enseignement utilisées communément en Grande-Bretagne présupposent des styles cognitifs courants dans une culture blanche de classe moyenne, qui peuvent être incompatibles avec la situation d'enfants issus d'autres milieux. Tandis que certains ne réagiront qu'à des méthodes coopératives et sociales, d'autres agiront de manière analytique et compétitive. On étudie également les facteurs sociaux. Cet article soutient que les programmes éducatifs, la méthodologie et les matériels devraient permettre à tous les enfants de s'identifier avec le processus éducatif et de fonctionner éventuellement de manière bi-cognitive. Les enseignants devront par conséquent reconnaître la diversité des styles cognitifs et d'apprentissage parmi les élèves. ... teachers may be knowledgeable, charismatic, dramatic, hardworking, caring and dedicated, and still not be effective with students whose learning styles are not complemented by their teaching styles.     Notizen: Abstract In a pluralistic society, there is a need for increased sensitivity in the selection of teaching styles. This paper considers evidence which shows that future responses to teaching and learning style are determined in pre-school years by the child's socio-cultural environment. The teaching methods in common use in Britain, however, presuppose cognitive styles current in white middle-class culture, which may be inappropriate to children from other backgrounds. While some will respond only to co-operative, social methods, others will act analytically and competitively. Factors of social class are also considered. The paper argues that curriculum, methodology and materials should allow all children to identify with the educational process, and should enable them eventually to function bi-cognitively. Teachers will therefore need to recognize the range of cognitive and learning styles among their pupils.
