Notes: The design of a photoemission microprobe beamline at the MAX laboratory is presented. The beamline will utilize the radiation from a 26 period undulator on the 550-MeV MAX storage ring. The beamline will be capable of providing about 1010 photons/s of monochromatized radiation (bandwidth better than 0.25 eV) in the energy range of 20 to 150 eV focused into a submicrometer focal spot. It will be used for scanning photoemission experiments with a lateral resolution better than 1 μm. The optical system is comprised of a plane-grating monochromator with a Kirkpatrick–Baez objective and a specially designed ellipsoidal focusing mirror.

Notes: The electronics for the microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes used in the LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) Thomson scattering diagnostic on the JET tokamak are described. It is shown how the microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes are gated with a very small coupling between gate signal and output, and how ≈300 V transient pulses with rise times of 230 ps are clipped to safe levels of ≈40 V.

Notes: By combining the time-of-flight or LIDAR principle with a Thomson backscatter diagnostic, spatial profiles of the electron temperature and density are measured in a magnetically confined fusion plasma. This technique was realized for the first time on the JET tokamak. A ruby laser (3-J pulse energy, 300-ps pulse duration, 0.5-Hz repetition rate) together with a 700-MHz bandwidth detection and registration system yields a spatial resolution of about 12 cm. A spectrometer with six channels in the wavelength range 400–800 nm gives a dynamic range of the temperature measurements of 0.3–20 keV. The stray light problem in the backscatter geometry is overcome by spectral discrimination and gating of the photomultipliers. A ruby filter in the spectral channel containing the laser wavelength allows calibration of the vignetting along the line of sight by means of Raman scattering, enabling the measurement of density profiles. The low level of background signal due to the short integration time for a single spatial point yields low statistical errors (ΔTe /Te ≈6%, Δne /ne ≈4% at Te =6 keV, ne =3×1019 m−3 ). Goodness-of-fit tests indicate that the systematic errors are within the same limits. The system is described and examples of measurements are given.

Notes: Summary. The clinical significance of placental perforation and bloodstained amniotic fluid was studied in a group of 7238 Danish women undergoing mid-trimester amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis under ultrasound guidance. The risk of spontaneous abortion was significantly increased both in pregnancies where the placenta was perforated and in those with blood-stained amniotic fluid. The risk estimate nearly doubled after placental perforation and more than doubled with a bloody tap. It is concluded that for women at relatively low risk of a fetal genetic abnormality, the indication of the amniocentesis should be reconsidered if a placental perforation is unavoidable.

Notes: Anthocyanin extraction from elderberry pomace is improved by mechanical disintegration and use of aqueous HCl in place of acidified ethanol as extractant, with pH being important in determining extractant effectiveness. Extraction at low solvent:pomace ratios gives extracts of higher concentration and lower volume, but with reduced efficiency. Enzyme pretreatments do not improve extractability from exten-sively crushed pomace, and if of extended duration, can result in anthocyanin break-down. Vacuum evaporation of extracts gave little loss of anthocyanins, and combined with freeze drying, produced materials with high anthocyanin retention.

Notes: The ability of the new generation H1-receptor antagonist, astemizole, to prevent histamine-induced airway obstruction and exercise-induced asthma (EIA) was studied in 20 children with asthma. The study was a randomised clinically controlled trial of oral astemizole versus placebo in a cross-over study. In each of the two treatment periods the children were tested at days 0, 6, 15 and 22 of therapy. The two treatment periods were separated by a washout period of 50 days, and at each visit a bronchial challenge with increasing concentrations of histamine followed by an exercise test was performed, and peak flow and asthmatic symptom score were recorded daily. The children tolerated significantly higher mean concentrations of histamine when treated with astemizole compared with placebo (P 〈 0.001). Astemizole postponed the response to exercise, but no change in the maximal response was found. No differences between the treatment periods were found regarding frequency of asthmatic symptoms or the daily recording of peak flow.

Notes: Abstract We have observed an enhanced production of pairs and triplets of identical charged particles at small momentum differences in events with two central jets produced inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The size and structure of this ‘Bose-Einstein’ enhancement, shown by the particles within a jet, resembles that observed in minimum-bias events. The correlation function can be well parametrized by the single variableQ — the absolute value of the four-momentum transfer — and is more peaked than a single Gaussian.

Notes: Summary Serial determinations of MPO and NAP activities in granulocytes were performed during the preremission phase and the remission phase in patients with AML. Of 18 patients examined during the preremission period, 9 showed an increased number of MPO deficient PMN. Complete remission was attained in 4 of these, in 3 the number of abnormal granulocytes changed to normal 7, 7 and 14 days before and in 1 simultaneously with the attainment of complete remission. In the other patients no changes in granulocyte MPO activity occurred during the preremission period. All 20 patients examined during complete remission showed a normal MPO activity in granulocytes. Of eight patients, who at diagnosis had shown abnormal granulocyte MPO activity, three developed relapse. In two of these, an increased number of MPO deficient PMN reappeared two and eight months prior to and in one simultaneous with clinical and laboratory suspicion of relapse. A statistically significant relation between low NAP scores and an increased number of MPO deficient PMN was found (P=0.011). Serial determinations of MPO activities in PMN, although restricted to cases of AML with initially abnormal values, may prove helpful in predicting achievement of complete remission and may furthermore prove to be useful as an indicator of early relapse.

Notes: Summary Two independent observers performed a double review of cytological and histological bone marrow material obtained at diagnosis and during follow up in 34 patients with the myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), subtypes refractory anaemia (RA) and RA with ringed sideroblasts (RA-S) (26 and 8 patients, respectively). Average values were used for the analyses. Data obtained at diagnosis confirmed earlier observations that a worse prognosis was indicated by high blast cell counts (P〈0.01), presence of blast foci and clonal cytogenetic abnormalities (P=0.08). Data obtained during follow up, in addition, showed that an increased probability of progression to FAB-subtype RA with an excess of blasts was related to both the occurrence of blast foci (P〈0.05) and the occurrence of new or additional clonal abnormalities (karyotype shift) (P〈0.01). The relationship between parameters investigated at diagnosis, during follow up, and in the pooled material, points to RA-S being a separate entity having a better prognosis than RA, and further substantiates an earlier observed relationship between blast cell accumulation and the frequency of cytogenetically abnormal metaphases.

Notes: Summary Four patients are described presenting papilloedema, increased pressure and reduced CSF absorption—caused by either spinal tumours, leptomeningeal carcinomatosis or encephalitis. Remarkably they all had a normal CT without signs of hydrocephalus. A 24-hour intracranial pressure monitoring showed a mean pressure of 30–35 mm Hg, recurrent plateau waves and high occurrence of B waves. Conductance to CSF outflow studied by a constant perfusion test was severely reduced 0.010–0.026mlmin−1mm Hg−1 (normal 〉 0.12ml mm Hg−1 min−1). Despite these findings no ventricular enlargement was seen on serial CT scans. The reason therefore remains unknown. Disappearance of papilloedema and a variable clinical improvement followed shunt-insertion.
