Notes: In this paper, the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic oxide films of the ternary Fe2O3-Bi2O3-PbTiO0 system prepared by rf-reactive sputtering are presented. As-sputtered films deposited at a substrate temperature below 400 °C are amorphous and behave paramagnetically. Amorphous films like these whose composition corresponds to the perovskite solid solution of BiFeO3 -PbTiO3 become crystalline with a perovskite structure on annealing in air, but no distinct spontaneous magnetization appears. On the contrary, in certain compositions in the Fe2O3 -Bi2O3 -PbTiO3 system, the samples retain a glassy (or amorphouslike) state even when the samples were annealed at around 600 °C. Also a spontaneous magnetization appears at room temperature. The maximum room-temperature saturation magnetization 4πMs achieved in this system is 1.67 kG with the composition 0.74Fe2O3 -0.16Bi2O3 -0.10PbTiO3. Experiments imply that the amorphous state is essential for establishment of strong ferromagnetism in the sputtered oxide films. Mössbauer spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed to examine the microscopic properties of the films that lead to ferromagnetism. The optical transmissivity and magneto-optical Faraday effect of the films are also discussed.

Notes: Amorphous-like oxide films of the Bi2O3-Fe2O3-PbTiO3 ternary system prepared by rf-reactive sputtering exhibit ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously well above room temperature. In this paper, we have investigated the relation between the film structure and the magnetic properties of the films by means of x-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization measurement with a vibrating-sample magnetometer, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The film composition used in the study is 0.16Bi2O3-0.74Fe2O3-0.10PbTiO3, which attains the maximum magnetization in this ternary system. It is revealed that ferromagnetism originates from the amorphous part in the films.

Notes: In order to investigate the crystalline electric field at R (R=rare earth) site and the induced magnetic moment at Co site in RCo3B2 compounds, high field magnetization process up to 15 T and paramagnetic susceptibility have been measured at various temperatures. It is found by analysis of the experimental data that (1) the crystal field parameter A20 is very large (∼−2000Ka0−2) and (2) significant magnetic moment (0.15–0.93μB) is induced at the Co site, in RCo3B2 compounds. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The specification and the layout of the booster synchrotron for SPring-8 were decided. The synchrotron is designed to accelerate electron or positron beams from 1 to 8 GeV with a repetition cycle of 1 Hz. The construction of the synchrotron was started in 1993. First, one bending, one quadrupole, and one sextupole magnet were made and the results of the magnetic field measurement were acquired. Two septum, one bump, and one kicker magnets for the beam extraction have been made, the field measurement and a few improvements have progressed. The high power test of the first rf cavity was finished successfully. The calibration test of the button position monitor with the signal treatment circuits is advanced now. The residual components of the synchrotron are designed and constructed, and the commissioning of the synchrotron will start in 1996. This paper presents the first measurement of each component. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: During starvation, counterregulatory responses to loss of food (i.e. responses that lead to an increase in appetite) occur in the central nervous system (CNS). This study was designed to examine whether middle-aged rats show greater or smaller behavioural, peripheral and central hormonal responses during starvation compared to young rats. In experiment 1, refeeding following 4 days of starvation was measured in both middle-aged (72-week-old) and young (9-week-old) rats. The level of refeeding was similar to each prestarved level until 3 days after the end of starvation in both groups. From the 4th day, the level of refeeding in young rats increased and reached beyond the prestarved level, whereas refeeding in middle-aged rats remained similar to the prestarved level. Thus, overall refeeding throughout 7 days was greater in young rats than in middle-aged rats. In experiment 2, middle-aged and young rats were starved for 4 days and were killed in the morning. Middle-aged rats showed a smaller plasma corticosterone response than that of young rats. The magnitude of decreases in plasma glucose, insulin and leptin was similar in both groups. In the arcuate nucleus, the starvation-induced increase in neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA and the decrease in proopiomelanocortin (POMC) mRNA were smaller in middle-aged rats than in young rats. In contrast, the starvation-induced decrease in corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus was greater in middle-aged rats than young rats. The magnitude of decrease in type-2 CRH receptor mRNA in the ventromedial hypothalamus was similar in both groups. The results indicate that (a) ageing impaired refeeding response (b), middle-aged rats showed the same directional neuropeptide mRNA responses as seen in young rats during starvation and (c) the magnitude of these counterregulatory responses in the CNS in middle-aged versus young rats was not uniform, but rather was site-specific or neuropeptide-specific. This study suggests the importance of NPY and POMC responsiveness in the arcuate nucleus in the age-related differences resulting from starvation-induced refeeding.

Notes: In our previous study, apparent reduction of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mRNA was seen in the hippocampus and the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) during repeated immobilization (IMO) stress, but not following starvation. Our laboratory has also shown that the sp1 activates, whereas tumour suppressor p53 represses the promoter activity of GR gene. In an attempt to reveal the possibility that transcription factors such as sp1 and/or p53 are involved in the regulation of GR mRNA expression in the hippocampus and in the PVN in vivo, we examined the expression of GR mRNA, p53 mRNA, and sp1 mRNA in the hippocampus and in the PVN during repeated IMO and following starvation. In addition, the expression of these mRNAs was examined in the anterior pituitary, another GR-rich area. GR mRNA in all subfields of the hippocampus was robustly decreased, while GR mRNA in the anterior pituitary was increased, 24 h following 4 × IMO (2 h daily, for 4 consecutive days) and immediately after 5 × IMO. GR mRNA in the PVN was significantly decreased immediately after 5 × IMO, but not at 24 h after 4 × IMO. Conversely, p53 mRNA in the PVN and hippocampus was increased, whereas p53 mRNA in the anterior pituitary was decreased, 24 h following 4 × IMO and immediately after 5 × IMO. Sp1 mRNA was unchanged in all areas examined following repeated IMO. Following 4 days of starvation, neither GR mRNA, p53 mRNA nor sp1 mRNA showed any changes in the PVN and the hippocampus, except there was a minor decrease in GR mRNA in CA1-2. In the anterior pituitary, 4 days of starvation induced a minor, but significant increase in GR mRNA, whereas it decreased p53 mRNA. Overall, regression analyses revealed a negative correlation between GR mRNA levels and p53 mRNA levels in CA1-2 and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and in the anterior pituitary. GR mRNA in the PVN also showed a tendency towards the negative correlation with p53 mRNA levels. The results raise the possibility that p53 negatively regulates GR mRNA expression in the PVN, the hippocampus and the anterior pituitary during repeated immobilization stress.

Notes: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the oxidative deterioration of oils and foods by using the single photoelectron counting system, which was designed for the measurement of ultraweak chemiluminescence. Thermally oxidized soybean oils were prepared and their chemical characteristics and chemiluminescence were measured. The results showed that the increase of emission intensity was closely correlated to the oxidative deterioration of oils, instant Chinese noodles and milk powder. This new method has a great advantage in measuring the quality of food in a short period of time by a nonexpert without any prior treatment.

Notes: We immunohistochemically analyzed the immunological background of the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP). Abundant lymphocytes infiltrated OLP mucosal lesions, particularly in satellite cell necrosis (SCN) regions, and cytotoxic/suppressor T lymphocytes were predominant in seven of 10 OLP cases. Some carried IL-2 receptors, particularly in SCN. Keratinocytes of the mucosal lesions expressed both HLA-ABC and HLA-DR antigens. This suggests that activated cytotoxic/suppressor T lymphocytes may play a major role in cytotoxity to keratinocytes as effector cells in OLP. OKM1-, OKM5+, HLA-DR+ and IL-1+ cells, vascular endothelial cells and clusters of spindle-shaped or oval cells, which had the same surface characteristics as a monocyte macrophage subset, were abundant and, together with migrating lymphocytes, might play a role in the immune response in mucosal lesions of OLP.

Notes: Localization of IgA, secretory component (SC) and J chain was investigated immunocytochemically in minor salivary glands of the lip and palate to define the mechanism involved in the transport of immunoglobulin A (slgA) into the saliva from the minor salivary glands. SC synthesis was detected in mucous acinar cells and ductal epithelial cells. Free SC is secreted into the saliva through secretory granules in the mucous acinar cells. Dimeric IgA containing J chain is translocated through these cells as slgA by a SC-medialed transport mechanism involving cytoplasmic vesicles.

Notes: 1. We investigated the cardiovascular effects of intracerebroventricularly administered (ICV) growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) in both spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar rats (WR) with reference to the involvement of adrenergic mechanisms and plasma AVP concentration.2. The ICV GRF induced biphasic changes of mean arterial pressure (MAP) in SHR. In the first phase, maximum pressor response was observed 2–3 min after injection. In the second phase, maximum depressor response was observed 12–13 min after injection, and lasted up to 21–22 min. In WRY there were no significant changes in MAP.3. ICV phentolamine attenuated the GRF-induced pressor response, but did not affect the depressor response. ICV bunazosine had no effect in both responses. ICV yohimbine attenuated the GRF-induced pressor response, but did not affect the depressor response.4. In SHR, plasma AVP concentration was not affected by ICV GRF.5. These data suggest that central GRF plays an important role in the maintenance of hypertension in SHR, since ICV GRF caused a significant depressor effect in SHR but not in WR. ICV GRF induced biphasic changes of MAP in SHR. The pressor response was mediated through central α2-adreno-ceptors. The depressor response was not mediated through central α-adrenoceptors. The depressor effect of ICV GRF was not mediated by the changes of plasma AVP concentration.
