    Notes: The effects of a magnetic underlayer on the magnetic behavior of overlayer/underlayer combinations were investigated. Permalloy underlayers of 100 nm thickness and composition 82% Ni-18% Fe by weight were sputter deposited on 3-in.-diam Si substrates. Magnetic orientations of the underlayers were set at 0°, 45°, and 90° with respect to the orientation of a subsequently plated Permalloy (79%Ni-21%Fe overlayer. Several film combinations were generated on each of the various underlayer configurations with plated thicknesses ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 μm. Spatial maps of magnetic orientation and Hk for underlayers and underlayer/overlayer combinations were collected using a modified Kerr BH imager (Kerr BHI) designed from Gudeman.1 The maps covered a 5 cm×5 cm square region with 5 mm spacing between points. Comparison of the maps before and after plating shows a partial reduction in the measured Hk values for film systems with large underlayer/overlayer orientation differences. A uniform decline in the effect of the underlayer to the overall orientation direction as film thicknesses increase was also observed.

    Notes: Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxial La0.8Ca0.2MnO3(LCMO) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition has been studied as a function of temperature and lattice strain. Pseudomorphic growth on (001) SrTiO3 substrates imposes an in-plane tensile stress on the LCMO films, which produces an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy in the growth plane, accompanied by a weak biaxial anisotropy in the easy plane. In contrast growth on (001) LaAlO3 substrates produces an in-plane compressive stress, which leads to an out-of-plane uniaxial easy axis. The observed behavior indicates the presence of a positive magnetostriction, and that the anisotropy energy is dominated by the epitaxial strain induced effects. Uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constants of 250 and 500 Å LCMO films have been determined by fitting the magnetization curves for temperatures between 5 and 200 K, and magnetostriction constants have been estimated subsequently. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the concept of the dynamic hohlraum an imploding Z pinch is optically thick to its own radiation. Radiation may be trapped inside the pinch to give a radiation temperature inside the pinch greater than that outside the pinch. The radiation is typically produced by colliding an outer Z-pinch liner onto an inner liner. The collision generates a strongly radiating shock, and the radiation is trapped by the outer liner. As the implosion continues after the collision, the radiation temperature may continue to increase due to ongoing PdV (pressure times change in volume) work done by the implosion. In principal, the radiation temperature may increase to the point at which the outer liner burns through, becomes optically thin, and no longer traps the radiation. One application of the dynamic hohlraum is to drive an ICF (inertial confinement fusion) pellet with the trapped radiation field. Members of the dynamic hohlraum team at Sandia National Labs have used the pulsed power driver Z (20 MA, 100 ns) to create a dynamic hohlraum with temperature linearly ramping from 100 to 180 eV over 5 ns. On this shot zp214 a nested tungsten wire array of 4 and 2 cm diam with masses of 2 and 1 mg imploded onto a 2.5 mg plastic annulus at 5 mm diam. The current return can on this shot was slotted. It is likely the radiation temperature may be increased to over 200 eV by stabilizing the pinch with a solid current return can. A current return can with nine slots imprints nine filaments onto the imploding pinch. This degrades the optical trapping and the quality of the liner collision. A 1.6 mm diam capsule situated inside this dynamic hohlraum of zp214 would see 15 kJ of radiation impinging on its surface before the pinch itself collapses to a 1.6 mm diam. Dynamic hohlraum shots including pellets were scheduled to take place on Z in September of 1998. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new fast scan submillimeter spectroscopic technique (FASSST) has been developed which uses a voltage tunable backward wave oscillator (BWO) as a primary source of radiation, but which uses fast scan (∼105 Doppler limited resolution elements/s) and optical calibration methods rather than the more traditional phase or frequency lock techniques. Among its attributes are (1) absolute frequency calibration to ∼1/10 of a Doppler limited gaseous absorption linewidth (〈0.1 MHz, 0.000 003 cm−1), (2) high sensitivity, and (3) the ability to measure many thousands of lines/s. Key elements which make this system possible include the excellent short term spectral purity of the broadly (∼100 GHz) tunable BWO; a very low noise, rapidly scannable high voltage power supply; fast data acquisition; and software capable of automated calibration and spectral line measurement. In addition to the unique spectroscopic power of the FASSST system, its implementation is simple enough that it has the prospect of impacting a wide range of scientific problems. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the design and performance of a pulsed slit valve for generation of supersonically cooled species in a long path length planar expansion. Utilizing three commercial solenoids driven synchronously by an economic power transistor circuit, the valve produces pulses adjustable in width from 500 to 1000 μs with a repetition rate up to 80 Hz. The pulsed valve can be operated continuously for 12 h, and operation over one month is typical before major maintenance is required. The path length × density product attained by this pulsed source is sufficient for observing large cluster species, such as the water hexamer, on our far-infrared spectrometer. With the addition of a detachable sample oven, it can also be heated up to 230 °C to inject nonvolatile molecules into planar supersonic expansions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The resistance often early, ten medium late and ten late flowering ryegrass populations to two rates of dalapon (2.8 and 5.6 kg ha-1 acid equivalent) was measured in a box experiment. There was no difference in the mean effect of dalapon on the maturity groups at the time of greatest yield reduction, but the recovery of the late flowering population was, on average, better than that of the medium late group. There was a range of reaction to herbicide within all three maturity groups and, in general, the high yielding populations without dalapon were the most resistant, but there were exceptions. Assessment at 2.8 kg ha-1 acid equivalent gave a similar ranking order to that using twice the amount of dalapon. The results of the current box experiment with seedlings were consistent with those obtained in the field at another location (Faulkner, 1974) for the eleven cultivars common to both trials. The resistance of a permanent pasture population was much lower than that of some cuttivars.
