Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded crystalline HCONH2 and HCOND2 have been measured up to 10 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond anvil cell. The frequencies of the in-plane intermolecular stretching mode which characterizes the hydrogen bond along the zig–zag chain increase with increasing pressure with a slope (dν/dP) of 11.1 cm−1/GPa, and its slope becomes steeper, to 19.2 cm−1/GPa, at about 5.0 GPa (=Pc). The frequencies of the intramolecular ND2 stretching mode decrease with increasing pressure at all pressure range except around Pc where they show an increase of 20 cm−1. It turns out from these results that (1) the hydrogen (deuteron) bonds along the chain direction become stronger in response to the pressure, and their increasing strength are more developed above Pc, and (2) the other type of hydrogen (deuteron) bonds which bridge the chains to make their planar hydrogen-bonded network are weakened around Pc. The pressure-induced phase transition at Pc is discussed by focusing on the behavior of two types of hydrogen bondings and the effect of the interplanar interaction.

Notes: To investigate the successive ordering processes of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CsNiCl3, a Heisenberg system with an easy-axis anisotropy, optical birefringence has been studied on various hexagonal ABX3 systems involving other types of anisotropy. The birefringence for light propagating along the c axis clearly shows that the basal plane component of spins in CsNiCl3 is ordered below the lower Néel point TN2. A cusplike anomaly in the temperature dependence of the birefringence for light propagating perpendicular to the c axis is observed at the upper Néel point TN1 of the Heisenberg system with an easy-axis anisotropy. A plausible explanation for this anomaly is presented in connection with a spin frustration effect.

Notes: Abstract Cytosolic sulfotransferase catalyzes sulfoconjugation of relatively small lipophilic endobiotics and xenobiotics. At least 44 cytosolic sulfotransferases have been identified from mammals, and based on their amino acid sequences, these forms are shown to constitute five different families. In humans, 10 sulfotransferase genes have been identified and shown to localize on at least five different chromosomes. The enzymatic properties characterized in the recombinant forms indicate the association of their substrate specificity with metabolisms of such nonpeptide hormones as estrogen, corticoid, and thyroxine, although most forms are also active on the sulfation of various xenobiotics. Genetic polymorphisms are observed on such human sulfotransferases as ST1A2, ST1A3, and ST2A3.

Notes: Background Atopic asthma is linked to a T-helper type 2 dominated pathogenesis, but there is increasing evidence of Th1/Tc1-mediated processes in the aetiopathology of asthma. Killer-specific secretory protein of 37 kDa (Ksp37) is expressed in cytotoxic lymphocytes, selectively in the effector subsets of CD8+- and CD4+ T lymphocytes and in CD16+/CD56dim natural killer cells and γ/δ T cells. This effector cell-specific expression of Ksp37 and its coexpression with perforin suggest that Ksp37 might be involved in processes mediated by cytotoxic cells. Objective We hypothesize that Ksp37 could indicate the involvement of cytotoxic lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of atopic asthma, and investigated Ksp37 concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected 10 min, 18, 42 or 162 h after segmental allergen provocation and in serum of patients with atopic asthma (n=25).Methods Ksp37 concentrations in BALF and serum were detected by ELISA. Flow cytometric analysis was used to assess numbers and cell subsets in BALF.Results Ksp37 increased significantly in BALF 10 min, 18 and 42 h, but not 162 h after allergen challenge compared with saline-challenged controls, while Ksp37 serum levels did not change significantly at all time-points. In addition, the increase in Ksp37 concentrations in BALF correlated with the corresponding numbers of lymphocytes. Conclusions We conclude that Ksp37 level increased in BALF 10 min, 18 and 42 h after allergen challenge but not in peripheral blood. Our findings suggest that segmental allergen challenge in asthma is associated with an increase in Ksp37 concentrations in BALF and an influx of potentially cytotoxic T lymphocytes into the lungs.

Notes: Abstract— The fatigue strength of notched specimens of a rotor steel was examined under variable torsional loading which simulates turbine-generator oscillations resulting from the high speed reclosing of transmission-line circuit breakers. The local stress-strain response at a notch root was analysed using Neuber's rule and the resulting complex strain sequences applied to smooth specimens. Using the rain flow analysis and the linear summation rule, fatigue lives of the smooth specimens were successfully predicted from constant amplitude fatigue life data in association with the cyclic stress-strain curve obtained by the incremental step method. Experimental crack initiation lives for notched specimens subjected to variable torsional loading were in excellent agreement with the theoretical curves derived from results on smooth specimens. According to the view that fatigue damage is equated to crack length, the propagation life of a mode II crack along the notch root was predicted to be actually coincident with the life to crack initiation at the notch root denned in this study, i.e. the life at the stage of finding a continuous circumferential crack.

Notes: Helicobacter pylori eradication markedly improves histological inflammation and decreases peptic ulcer recurrence, but little is known about the subsequent development of gastric mucosal injury.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To investigate whether acid suppression treatment after eradication influences the development of gastric erosions.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Eighty-one patients (gastritis or peptic ulcer) after successful H. pylori eradication were divided into two groups: 40 received an H2-blocker for 6 months (H2-blocker-positive) and 41 received no treatment (H2-blocker-negative). Endoscopy was performed before, and at 3 and 6 months after completion of eradication.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Cumulative prevalence of gastric erosions in the H2-blocker-positive group was significantly lower than in the H2-blocker-negative group, 25% vs. 42%, respectively. In the H2-blocker-negative group but not the H2-blocker-positive group, the cumulative prevalence of gastric erosions after eradication was higher in patients with less severe corpus atrophy or more severe corpus gastritis.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Development of gastric erosions after H. pylori eradication may be controlled by acid suppression treatment. Less severe atrophy or more severe gastritis in oxyntic glands before eradication may be involved in the development of gastric erosions. These results support the idea that recovery of acid secretion may be one of factors for development of gastric mucosal erosions after successful eradication.
