Notes:
Summary The mechanical properties of strips from rabbit abdominal Aorta and Vena cava cut in the longitudinal (cutting angle 90°) and in the transversal axis (cutting angle 0°) have been studied and collated with special respect to their compliance during resting state and during contraction. The following results have been obtained: 1. All results from the transversal sections of the Vena cava, which have been found as yet, point to pure muscular characteristics. 2. The longitudinal sections of the Aorta and Vena cava are chiefly determined by properties of pure elastic fibres. 3. The transversal section of the Aorta combines properties of elastic and muscular fibres; during resting state, i.e. after application of Papaverin, the elastic fibres predominantly constitute the mechanical properties, during contraction, i.e. upon addition of Norepinephrine, the muscular fibres contribute to the properties of the strip. The dynamic stiffness of the transversal strip of the vein increases linearly with the tension, irrespective of the fact whether the tension is increased passively by stretching or actively by contraction. On the other hand referred to equal starting tension under the influence of Norepinephrine the dynamic stiffness of transversal Aorta-strips increases. Under static conditions, the contraction depending on the length determines the properties of the strip, when it is exposed to Norepinephrine. Over a wide range of lengthening the “effective stiffness”, which results from the interference of contractions with elastic reactions, is—at equal tension—smaller than in the resting state. The results are discussed with regard to the transversal and the longitudinal tension of the vessels in situ and to their elastic properties resulting from active changes in width.
