Notizen: A comparative investigation, based on a series of numerical tests, of two purely explicit and one semi-implicit finite element methods used for incompressible flow computation is presented. The ‘segregated’ approach is followed and the equations of motion are considered sequentially. The fundamental concepts and characteristics of the formulations and the solution methodology used are described in technical detail. Various modifications to Chorin's projection algorithm are investigated, particularly with respect to their effects on stability and accuracy. The stability of the semi-implicit method is shown to be less restrictive when compared to the explicit methods as the Reynolds number increases. At large time steps the artificial viscosity is also reduced and higher accuracy is obtained. The performance of the methods discussed in this paper is illustrated by the numerical solutions obtained for the cavity flow and flow past a rearward-facing step problems at high Reynolds numbers, and free convection flow problem at high Rayleigh numbers. It is shown that the semi-implicit method needs fewer iterations than the explicit methods, and the accuracy of the present methods is guaranteed by comparison with the existing methods.

Notizen: Multiphase solid-liquid pipeline flow with small quantities of free gas is treated in the paper. A 1-D separated unsteady flow model with liquid and gas virtual mass effect is described. A stable numerical method for the model equations based on the characteristics method is developed. Some accurate iteration procedures at every grid point for the solution of the algebraic equations are shown. The wave speed for flow in a pipeline worked out on the basis of this theoretical model shows a good correspondence with experimental results for two- and three-phase mixtures.

Notizen: In computational mechanics, flow simulation of polymer processing not only must deal with exotic constitutive behaviour and complex geometry, but often faces the presence of moving free boundaries. The cavity-filling of injection moulding, treated as a Stefan problem, could be better attacked, computationally, by a fixed-domain approach after a Baiocchi transformation. For thermosetting materials, modelling the rheology and the chemical reaction needs the kinematics in the meniscus region behind the moving front. The fluid mechanics, however, touches on the unresolved question of the moving contact point, fundamental to wetting phenomena. Aspects of particular interest to polymer processing are reviewed. In spite of the imperfections, the simulation of the ASTM standard ‘spiral-mould test’ for thermosets has recently proved promising as an inverse problem to characterize the rheology of a commercial fast-reacting thermosetting material. The key was to match the simulation only to portions of the data that were least influenced by the uncertainties.

Notizen: Some recent results are reviewed that indicate the appropriate nature of Taylor-Galerkin based algorithms for solving model convection-diffusion problems accurately in time and for simulating more complex non-Newtonian flows, such as those arising in the polymer industry. Initially attention is given therefore to linear and non-linear convection-diffusion model problems in two space dimensions, and then to transient problems involving heating effects. Newtonian and generalized Newtonian models are considered for both power-law and Carreau models for various parameters. Effects of shear-rate changes and temperature variations through transient build up periods are discussed in relation to their influence on the viscosity and viscous heating for thermal Péclet numbers of 1 and 100.

Notizen: For several years, experimental investigations with magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters have been conducted at the Institute for Space Systems (IRS). In order to achieve a better understanding of these thrusters, numerical procedures to calculate these MPD accelerators have been applied. A theoretical model for the calculation of the current, electron temperature and flow distribution in self-field MPD thrusters has been developed. The extended Ohm's law has been applied to calculate the current contour lines, the electron energy equation is taken to calculate the electron temperature distribution and a two-dimensional flow code is used to obtain the velocity, pressure and heavy particles temperature distributions. With both temperature distributions, a thermal non-equilibrium in the plasma flow is obtained. The gas dynamic equations are solved by a finite volume code EUFLEX, which was transformed to cylindrical co-ordinates and extended for the implementation of j × B and heat source terms. The electromagnetic discharge equation and the electron energy equation are transformed into curvilinear co-ordinates and solved for the steady phase by a modified Gauss-Seidel algorithm. A comparison of the numerical and experimental results for different currents is presented and discussed.

Notizen: The simulation of flows around single cylinders, tandem cylinders and infinite chains of cylinders with the lattice gas method is presented. The effects of the ratio of the cylinder diameter to channel width and different outflow boundary conditions are discussed. Results obtained applying different lattice gas models are given. Drag coefficient, wake length and Strouhal number are compared with experimental data. The agreement between numerical and experimental results is satisfactory.

Notizen: Two conservative versions of the recently introduced locally exact consistent upwind scheme of second order (LECUSSO-scheme) are presented which both use four points (two upstream, one downstream) and do not suffer from wiggles. Test calculations using a flow problem with an exact analytical solution show that the two schemes, called LECUSSO-C and QUICK-PLUS, are superior to the original LECUSSO-scheme and to several other standard difference schemes.

Notizen: Weak form for the solution of the complete second order boundary value problem in one-dimensional case is derived in a way, which should be easy to comprehend. The starting point is the boundary value problem extended with suitable jump conditions. The aim is a convenient form for numerical calculations and weighting functions giving accurate nodal values. The connections with SUPG-, GLS- and GGLS-method is discussed with reinvention explaining the selections of ‘free’ parameters related to these methods. Finally some ideas to extend the methods to two-dimensional cases are presented.

Notizen: A domain-adaptive technique and an iterative, block bidiagonal method are used to analyse the unsteady dynamics of annular liquid membranes subject to fluctuations in the mass injected into the volume enclosed by the membranes. The domain-adaptive technique maps the unknown, time-dependent, curvilinear geometry of the liquid membrane into a unit interval. The condition that the membrane's radius is zero at the convergence point is used to determine the convergence length, which is governed by an ordinary differential equation. This equation is solved iteratively together with those which govern the fluid dynamics equations. A block bidiagonal technique is used to determine the mass per unit length, radius, and axial and radial velocity components of the membrane. It is shown that the pressure of the gases enclosed by the liquid membrane responds instantaneously to changes in and exhibits the same periodic behaviour as the mass injection rate. The convergence length takes a delay time to respond to the mass injection rate fluctuations. The magnitude of this delay time increases as the Froude and Weber numbers and the nozzle exit angle are increased. The amplitude of the oscillations of both the convergence length and the pressure coefficient increases as the pressure difference across the membrane and the amplitude of the mass injection rate fluctuations are increased.

Notizen: The introduction of second order sensitivities to behaviour approximation in structural optimization is applied and investigated. Numerical computation of second derivatives is considered and evaluated. Two approaches in shape optimization are involved, namely shape finding by moving boundaries and shape genesis by distributing mass in a specified design domain. A series of examples is engaged to work out the benefits of second order information in both the above fields.

Notizen: A generalized hybrid optimal synthesis method is developed for truss structures in which the design variables are the co-ordinates of the panel points, cross-sectional areas and discrete material kinds of member elements. The primary design problem is formulated in terms of the shape, material and sizing variables and approximated to a sequence of convex and separable subproblems by using mixed direct/reciprocal design variables. Each subproblem is solved by a dual method in which the continuous shape and sizing variables are optimized by a Newton-type algorithm and the discrete material and continuous sizing variables are improved by a discrete sensitivity analysis. Using the proposed method, discrete material kinds, shape and sizing variables can be systematically improved to obtain an optimum solution. The rigourness, reliability and efficiency of the method are demonstrated by applying it to the minimum cost design of trusses subjected to stress and displacement constraints.

Notizen: This paper introduces a model of a woven monolayer composed of two orthogonal fibres and describes an optimization technique including a fracture condition. The first fracture behaviour of the material containing a local break is analysed. The description of the stress-state in the local break vicinity is reduced to the determination of a special form of the Green function for simultaneous finite-difference equations. The problem allows the analytical solution for unknown functions in terms of Fourier series. The solution of the problem shows that the fracture behaviour of the material depends on the presence of stabilizing tension of fibres parallel to the crack direction. The model is used for establishing an optimization model and for applying an optimization procedure including strength conditions.

Notizen: The present paper contains a numerical study on semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis. The paper describes the dissimilarities of sensitivities due to mesh refinement for a total of five different plane stress elements. Furthermore, we discuss which mesh relocation technique to use in order to perform an efficient sensitivity analysis, i.e. whether a relocation of nodes on the entire domain is necessary, or whether we can fulfil the accuracy requirements by only relocating the boundary nodes.

Notizen: The purpose of this paper is to present a mechanical fracture method for the optimal design of machine components. A single criterion design is used. Mean annual cost expenses are the objective function. They depend on the survival function. Statistical fracture mechanics methods are able to estimate machine components reliability dependence on crack-like defect length. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the application of this method. It is recommended to evaluate the reliability of spiral cylindrical springs too.

Notizen: When we use FEM as a structural analyser, we have two methods for the optimization of two dimensional bodies. The first method is the boundary changing method in which the co-ordinates of nodes should be changed to the optimum location without changing the thickness of elements. The second method is the thickness changing method in which the thickness of elements should be changed to the optimum values without changing the co-ordinates of nodes. In this paper, we study the two optimum methods in the condition of uniform stress distribution, and the element area distribution method, which is one of the boundary shape changing methods, has been developed.

Notizen: The optimization problem of elastic pin-jointed structures for overall stability conditions is presented in this paper. Two optimality criteria, the minimum of volume and the maximum of critical load, are taken into account. The optimization problem is presented as a non-linear multicriteria mathematical programming problem.Dimensional analysis enables natural division of the problem into two stages: optimization in space of non-dimensional variables with following specification of final dimensions. The sensitivity analysis and incremental solution scheme are used for the discription and solution of the optimization problem. Two sets of examples illustrate given models and a compromise solution. In the first sample of problems the optimization of the cross-sectional areas of the structure is considered while shape optimization is given in the second sample. Mathematical models of both examples are illustrated by numerical results. The shape optimization problem is characterized by a multiplicity of buckling modes and leads to complicated non-convex mathematical programming problems. Given examples are representative of complexities associated with practical problems.

Notizen: A reliable and accurate a posteriori error estimator for quadratic triangular and tetrahedral elements is presented. Its application in an automated, adaptive finite element modelling system for elasticity problems demonstrates its ability to accurately estimate the error in the energy norm. A local version of this error estimator is also used to determine the multiple level h-refinement necessary to improve the finite element mesh.

Notizen: This paper is concerned with accurate and efficient determination of design sensitivity coefficients (DSCs) for solid mechanics problems with small strains and rotations, but with material non-linearities present (elasto-plastic or elasto-viscoplastic problems). This approach is based on direct differentiation (DDA) of the relevant derivative boundary element method (DBEM) formulation of the problem. Analytical differentiation of the DBEM equations leads to singular integral equations for the DSCs with weakly (logarithmically for 2-D) singular kernels which are easy to deal with. Also, stress components and their sensitivities are obtained on the boundary of a body with great accuracy. These quantities are typically difficult to obtain accurately from finite element methods (FEM).A computer program for general two-dimensional (plane strain and plane stress) problems has been developed based on the above formulation. Numerical results are presented for some sample problems and these are compared against direct solutions. The agreement between the DBEM and direct solutions is excellent for these examples.

Notizen: The paper presents an effort to develop an ‘intelligent drawing desk’: a computer program that incorporates CAD, structural analysis and optimization, database query and automatic choice of the initial design. The advantages of such an integrated software are demonstrated on the testbed of plane steel trusses. After a brief presentation of the conventional part of the package, its expert module is discussed more thoroughly. Implemented in ‘Prolog’, that module aids the user in choosing the initial layout of the truss. It checks and supplements, if necessary, the values of the structural attributes given by the designer. After a complete set of attributes has been established, the module searches for similar solutions in the database. The latter represents the experience, i.e. all solutions accepted by the user in the past. An initial design is obtained without strength analysis by matching the current values of the attributes against those stored in the database. Provided the latter is exhaustive enough, one obtains in this way quite reasonable initial values of the design variables. The final design can be found then by using conventional analysis, optimization and sizing procedures that belong to the procedural part of the package.

Notizen: An adaptive h-version finite element procedure is presented for a 2D elastodynamic transient analysis using direct integration. The procedure modifies the spatial discretization, i.e. the mesh, in time so that the spatial discretization error can be controlled in each time instant. We analyse an a priori error estimate for the total energy which shows that an a posteriori error estimate developed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu for linear elastostatics can reasonably be extended to dynamic transient analysis. For the time integration, both explicit and implicit time integration schemes can be coupled with the procedure. However, the study in this paper is confined to the use of the Newmark scheme. Numerical examples are used to study the performance of the error estimate and to illustrate the adaptive procedure. Obtained numerical results indicate that: (i) the extension of the Zienkiewicz-Zhu estimate to dynamic transient analysis is useful; (ii) the presented adaptive procedure can, in an efficient way, provide a finite element solution with a user-controlled accuracy.

Notizen: Using a sequential time-marching approach, we describe and implement effective solution strategies for the equations governing immiscible displacement in a porous medium. By combining adaptive grid refinement with an operator-splitting technique based on the modified method of characteristics, the saturation equation is treated in a consistent and accurate way. For the pressure equation we construct accurate piecewise linear velocity components from a piecewise linear pressure approximation.

Notizen: Hydrated soft tissues of the human musculoskeletal system, such as articular cartilage in diarthrodial joints or the annulus fibrosis of the inter vertebral disk, are accurately represented by a biphasic continuum model consisting of an incompressible solid phase (collagen and proteoglycan) and incompressible, inviscid fluid (interstitial fluid) and derive from the continuum theory of mixtures. These tissues exhibit a viscoelastic-type response which is caused by the diffusive drag of the fluid phase as it flows past the solid phase. In this study an automated, adaptive, finite element solution of the governing biphasic equations is presented. The finite element formulation is based on a mixed-penalty approach in which the penalty form of the continuity equation for the mixture is included in the weak form. Pressure, solid and fluid velocities are interpolated independently, and the coefficients of the C-1 pressure field are eliminated at the element level. The resulting matrix form is a system of first order differential equations which is solved via standard finite difference methods. Mesh generation and updating, including both refinement and coarsening, for the two-dimensional examples examined in this study are performed using Finite Quadtree. The adaptive analysis is based on an error indicator which is the L2 norm of the difference between the finite element solution and a projected finite element solution. Total stress, calculated as the sum of the solid and fluid phase stresses, is used in the error indicator. Rezoning is accomplished by transferring the finite element solution for the primary variables onto the locally updated mesh using a projected field. These projected values allow the finite difference algorithm to proceed in time using the updated mesh. The accuracy and effectiveness of this adaptive finite element analysis is demonstrated using two-dimensional axisymmetric problems corresponding to the uncomined compression of a cylindrical disk of soft tissue and the indentation of a thin sheet of soft tissue. The method is shown to effectively capture the steep gradients in both problems and to produce solutions in good agreement with independent, converged, numerical solutions.

Notizen: This paper presents an investigation of using orthogonal constant and higher order stress modes in formulating efficient hybrid elements by equipping the primary idea of Bergan and Hanssen. Two sample elements modified from Pian-Sumihara 5-β plane and Pian-Tong 18-β hexahedral assumed contravariant stress elements are derived. With the suggested admissible simplifications of the flexibility matrices incorporated into the two new elements, new plane and hexahédral elements requiring respectively no and a negligible amount of computing efforts for inverting the flexibility matrices are formed. All, proposed elements are stable, invariant, contain no empirically determined factor and strictly pass the patch test. Popular benchmark problems are studied and the accuracy of the proposed elements is close to their parent models.

Notizen: The algorithm optimization presented uses the optimality criteria method so as to minimize the total weight of the structure in the presence of a constraint of the damping type. The goal of this study is to increase the structural damping by optimizing the viscoelastic and elastic material distribution over the structure. The types of damping considered are hysteristic. The gradient of the constraint function in relation to the design variables is calculated with the aid of a complex variable sensitivity method. Several numerical results are presented to validate the algorithm proposed.

Notizen: A non-linear 9-node stress resultant shell finite element with six degrees of freedom per node is formulated. The material non-linearity is based on an implicit integration scheme using the von Mises yield criterion and linear isotropic bardening. The small strain geometric non-linearity is formulated using the polar decomposition theorem of continuum mechanics via a corotational updated Lagrangian method, which represents finite rotations with accuracy. Reduced integration is used to remove locking and calculate the stresses at their optimal stress accuracy points. A practical procedure is employed to stabilize the troublesome spurious zero energy modes. A number of tests covering the non-linear material and geometry ranges and buckling show the good performance of the new element.

Notizen: A general theoretical framework is presented for the fully non-linear analysis of shells by the finite element method. The governing equations are derived exclusively in terms of resulting quantities through a logical and straightforward descent from three-dimensional continuum mechanics without appealing to simplifying assumptions (hence the name genuinely resultant). As a result, the underlying theory is statically and geometrically exact, and it naturally includes small strain and finite strain problems of thin as well as thick shells. The underlying mathematical structure and the variational formulation of the theory are examined. This appears to be crucial for the development of computational procedures employing the Newton-Kantorovich linearization process and the Galerkin type discretization method. The treatment of finite rotations through an arbitrary parametrization of the rotation group and the interpolation procedure of SO(3)-valued functions underlying the construction of finite element basis are other issues studied in this paper. A numerical analysis is presented in order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed formulation. Small strain problems as well as finite strain deformation of rubber-like shells undergoing finite rotations are considered. Special attention is devoted to the assessment of the relevance of the drilling degree-of-freedom and highly non-uniform through-the-thickness deformation in the case of shells made of incompressible material.

Notizen: Shape functions and numerical integration formulas for three-dimensional finite element analysis as found in most finite element reference books are incomplete. For example, shape functions and integration formulas for a pyramid with a quadrilateral base are missing. It is also difficult to find symmetric higher-order integration formulas for triangular and tetrahedral elements. In general, these shape functions and integration formulas cannot be satisfactorily derived as degenerate cases of shape functions and integration formulas for hexahedral (brick) elements. In this paper we present C°-continuous quadrilateral pyramid elements and integration formulas for two- and three-dimensional elements.

Notizen: A simple and reliable method of aerodynamic design of airfoils is proposed for a given range of the angle of attack. The method is based on the solution of a new inverse boundary-value problem of aerohydrodynamics. In the problem the initial velocity distributions are given along the contour of the required airfoil as a function of the are co-ordinate for extreme values of the angle of attack from a fixed range. We justify a method of choice of these distributions which guarantees a non-stalling flow around the airfoil. The problem of airfoil optimization is also considered. Results of numerical calculations are presented.

Notizen: A novel technique is developed to simulate the effects of an infinite elastic solid by using multiple springs having spatially varying stiffnesses. The spring constants are computed by numerical integration of classical solutions for point or line loads in an infinite or semi-infinite elastic mass. Under certain conditions, even the 'exact' values of spring constants may become negative at some nodes. A simple and highly effective algorithm is proposed to remove this computational difficulty. The technique is applied to the computation of displacements and stresses around underground openings. For a circular opening subjected to different stress conditions, spring constants computed by the proposed numerical integration technique are found to be 'identical' to their 'exact' values. Results obtained by the proposed technique for displacements and stresses around circular and non-circular openings are found to be in an excellent agreement with classical and boundary element solutions. The principal advantages of the proposed technique are that an unbounded solid may be simulated by a relatively very small finite model and a standard finite element code requires no modification for its implementation.

Notizen: A finite element formulation for the large sliding contact problem is discussed. With respect to a set of two material points the free and contacting state are distinguished. Because of the possibly occurring large slidings, the two points contact conditions are transformed to contact conditions with respect to larger sets of points, the so-called contact units. An incremental solution strategy is presented which calculates the equilibrium solution that obeys these contact conditions using an iterative procedure. Part of this strategy is the identification of actual sets of contacting material points. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated by some case-studies.

Notizen: Discrete source superposition techniques seek sets of discrete, singular source strengths which satisfy the boundary conditions of a particular problem, and, necessarily, the governing differential equation. The sum of the fields produced by such sources thus provides an approximation to the required solution. In many respects these techniques are a special case of conventional boundary integral equation methods, where density distributions of smeared sources are sought. In this paper an attempt is made to extend the discrete source superposition technique to transient problems. The example addressed is the transient diffusion equation. The method developed does seem to have sòme promise. It is found that even coarse spatial discretization can yield quite accurate results, and that surprisingly large timesteps can be employed and accuracy maintained. Further, although no direct comparisons are made, the absence of spatial integrations indicates that the computational effort per timestep is likely to be less than for conventional BIE.

Notizen: An adaptive h-refinement procedure utilizing compatible 5- to 7-node quadrilateral transition elements together with 4-node elements is presented for Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problems. By introducing the transition elements which have physical midside nodes, some difficulties associated with imposing displacement constraints on irregular nodes to enforce interelement compatibility in common adaptive h-refinement on quadrilateral mesh are easily overcome. Numerical examples are presented to show the effectiveness of using the transition elements for the adaptive h-refinement.

Notizen: A new procedure is presented for the determination of the fracture mechanics weight functions that are required for the evaluation of stress intensity factors in cracked solids. The procedure can be used with a standard three-dimensional boundary element code. The weight functions are proportional to the displacements on the boundary of the solid when the only loading is a pair of self-equilibrated point forces at the crack front. In previous work, the highly singular crack-tip fields that this loading produces have been modelled by replacing the crack front by a cylindrical cavity with appropriate displacement boundary conditions on the cavity walls. It is shown here that results are dependent on the cavity radius and that convergence of the results cannot be guaranteed. An alternative procedure, based on the substraction of fundamental fields (SFF), is demonstrated herein. The high-order singularities are removed from the field before the reduced problem is solved numerically using a standard boundary element method. Since the reduced problem is equivalent to an unloaded crack in a solìd subjected to boundary tractions, the usual quarter-point displacement elements and quarter-point traction singular elements can be used to improve the accuracy. Weight functions, so obtained, are used to evaluate stress intensity factors as a function of position on the crack front for a straight-fronted crack in a rectangular bar subjected to various loadings. Both edge and central cracks are considered and the validity of the technique is demonstrated by comparing the results with previously published values.

Notizen: This paper considers accelerated bisection methods for calculating the eigenvalues of symmetric tridiagonal and quindiagonal matrices using cubic polynomial interpolation, as well as first and second order Newton iteration. Recursive relations based on the Sturm sequences are presented for the Newton type methods. The relations use a convenient scaling which retains the relative magnitudes in the iterative schemes but which avoids numerical overflow. Numerical examples show a significant increase in convergence rate.

Notizen: Quasi-Newton and Secant-Newton methods have been successful in solving problems of elasto-plasticity. In this paper these methods are applied to elasto-viscoplastic analyses, in an algorithm coupling the global solution for displacement increments with local Newton-Raphson stress iteration at each sampling point. The familiar rank-two DFP and BFGS methods are generalized to the Broyden family of algorithms, and this generalization is also used to produce a Secant-Newton algorithm corresponding to Hoshino's method. Consideration is given to the most effective strategy when only a limited number of Quasi-Newton iterates may be stored; overwriting, re-start or continuation in Secant-Newton form. Results are presented for a tunnelling problem using both plane strain and axisymmetric formulations.

Notizen: This paper investigates the convergence properties of iterative schemes for the solution of finite element mass matrix equations that arise through the application of a Taylor-Galerkin algorithm to solve instationary Navier-Stokes equations. This is a time-stepping algorithm that involves Galerkin mass matrix equations at fractional stages within each time-step. Plane Poiseuille flow and shear-driven cavity flow are selected as benchmark problems on which to investigate the effects of various choice of scheme and time-step dependency. The iterative convergence of each mass matrix equation for a single fractional stage is studied, both at the element and the system matrix level. The underlying theory is confirmed and it is shown how optimal iterative convergence rates may be achieved for a Jacobi scheme by employing an appropriate acceleration factor. Moreover, this factor is trivial to compute. The consequential effects on the convergence of the time-stepping procedure to reach steady-state are also considered where non-linear effects are present.

Notizen: Static discontinuities (i.e. distributions of forces along a line or a surface, implying a jump of tractions across it) and kinematic (displacement) discontinuities are considered simultaneously as sources acting on the unbounded elastic space Ω∞ along the boundary Γ of a homogeneous elastic body Ω embedded in Ω∞. The auxiliary elastic state thus generated in the body is associated with the actual elastic state by a Betti reciprocity equation. Using suitable discretizations of actual and fictitious boundary variables, a symmetric Galerkin formulation of the direct boundary element method is generated. The following topics are addressed: reciprocity relations among kernels with particular attention to the role of singularities; conditions to be satisfied by the boundary field modelling in order to achieve the symmetry of the coefficient matrix; variational properties of the solution. With reference to two-dimensional problems, a technique based on a complex-variable formalism is proposed to perform the double integrations involved in this approach. An implementation of this technique for elastic analysis is described assuming straight elements, with continuous linear displacements and piecewise-constant tractions; all the double integrations are carried out analytically.Comparisons, from the computational standpoint, with the traditional non-symmetric method based on collocation and single integration, demonstrate the effectiveness of the present approach.

Notizen: An important step in the solution of non-linear deformation problems using a Newton-Raphson type of iterative scheme is the calculation of a tangent operator (the so-called Jacobian) by linearizing the involved field equations. In this paper, full linearization of the virtual work equation is performed in an updated Lagrangian framework together with a calculation of the consistent linearized material moduli. To update the material state, a material frame indifferent two parameter integration scheme introduced earlier by the authors is used. In general, the reference configuration is updated after each iteration to coincide instantaneously with the present guess of the unknown equilibrium configuration. Another approach is to use the previous equilibrium state (at the beginning of a time step) as the reference configuration until the new equilibrium configuration at the end of the time step is found. The present paper explores the performance of two different Jacobians based on the above two approaches, with emphasis on their accuracy and convergence characteristics when large incremental steps are used. Finally, some details of their finite element implementation are given and results for several numerical tests including upset forging and extrusion of an axisymmetric billet are presented and discussed.

Notizen: Exact natural frequencies are determined for the torsional vibration of pretwisted thin-walled open-profile bars having torsionally clamped and pinned end restraints. The equation of motion and boundary conditions are derived from a multifilament model of a pretwisted thin-walled bar undergoing warp deformation and a moderately large twist about the elastic axis. Closed-form torsional frequencies and mode shapes are derived from the linear terms of the resulting non-linear equations. As the length-to-leg ratio (L/b) and leg-to-thickness ratio (b/t) of typical open-profile bars are varied, the individual and collective effects of warping and pretwist on the non-dimensional torsional frequencies are demarcated. In addition, the closed-form solutions offered here reveal considerable destiffening of the torsional frequencies due to warping-pretwist coupling present in thin-walled bars having pretwisted, unsymmetrical, open-profiles and torsionally clamped and pinned end restraints. This coupling effect, which have been ignored in thin-walled bar vibration theories hitherto, is brought out by the Wagner effect and warping shear stresses acting on the profiles.

Notizen: In most polymer processing applications such as injection moulding, fibre spinning and extrusion, crystallization plays an important role. The energy flow at the solid-liquid interface during crystallization controls the kinetics and subsequently influences the morphology of the transforming material. Our approach is based on the classical phase-change problem. The governing transient heat conduction equations in the liquid and the solid domains are solved using a boundary element method (BEM) with a time dependent fundamental solution to determine the temperature distribution. The boundary energy equation is used to predict the movement of the front. The crystallization kinetics are introduced through a mathematical model based on the cooling rate of a hypothetical control volume in the solid (crystalline) domain and the changes in the crystallinity are expressed in terms of the varying interface temperature. First, we verified the BEM formulation and implementation by comparing the results of two examples with an analytical and a finite difference method in one-dimension. Next, we investigated the effects of the crystallization kinetics by allowing the interface temperature to vary during the crystallization process. The results show that the crystallization front movement is slowed considerably when the kinetics are taken into account. Also, depending on the cooling rate and the parameters in the kinetics model, there may be undercooling during the process.

The present work is the first known vibrational study of the effects of stress singularities at the reentrant corner of skewed plates. In conjunction with classical thin plate theory, the Ritz trial space of assumed transverse displacement functions consists of algebraic polynomials, which are mathematically complete, and corner functions, which account for the singular behaviour of bending stresses at the reentrant corner. The corner functions were derived approximately four decades ago to study the nature of the stress singularities which occur at sharp interior corners or crack tips of typical plane elasticity and plate bending problems. Accurate non-dimensional frequencies are calculated for thin plates having various side ratios and arbitrary degrees of skewness. Detailed numerical studies show that augmenting the Ritz trial space of polynomials with corner functions, having a co-ordinate origin at the reentrant corner, enhances the convergence of the upper-bound frequencies. The importance of using corner functions in skew plate vibrations is found to increase as the skew angle increases and as the side ratio decreases. Results obtained using the present method are compared with those obtained by other investigators using both theoretical and experimental methods.

Notizen: The finite element method is by its nature very modular. Object oriented programming enables full advantage to be taken of this modularity. This makes for safer and easier programming, and extending or modifying object oriented programs is very straightforward. The paper describes an object oriented implementation of the finite element method, and illustrates the advantages of the approach.

Notizen: A six noded triangular finite element has been proposed to model variable order singularities in the first derivatives of field variables occurring at multiple locations (up to three) lying in close proximity. The element satisfies the convergence requirements fully. The element will be very useful in the analysis of neighbouring cracks, zig-zag cracks, kinked cracks, etc., involving mechanical and/or thermal loadings. The first degenerate form, which is a two point variable order singularity element, can be used, for example, to cover the distance between two adjacent crack tips. The second degenerate form, which is a one point variable order singularity element, can be used around a crack tip like any other crack tip elements. Six case studies have been reported, three involving mechanical loadings and the other three thermal loadings. These have helped to check the performance of the element and its two degenerate forms. The accuracy of the results in all the examples is good.

Notizen: In this paper, the multiple reciprocity boundary element method is applied to transform domain integrals due to thermal loadings into equivalent boundary integrals. The resulting formulation is restricted to two-dimensional elastic and isotropic materials with any steady-state temperature distribution, including internal heat generation. Several numerical examples are presented to validate the formulation and demonstrate the accuracy of the method.

Notizen: This note presents a rational basis for a unified finite element algorithm capable of dealing with a wide range of fluid flow in both steady and transient cases. It is hoped that empiricism inherent in many previous approaches can be avoided and a sound basis provided. The algorithm permits the use of equal interpolation for all variables by avoiding the need for the Babuska-Brezzi constraints in regions where the flow is nearly incompressible. The success of the algorithm, which here is written for the non-conservative equation form, is demonstrated on several examples ranging from (nearly) incompressible through transonic regions to supersonic flows. Up to mild shocks such as those occurring in the examples presented in this paper, no 'artificial' viscosity is added at any stage. The algorithm extends some concepts introduced in an earlier paper.

Notizen: Using curvilinear co-ordinates of the surface, a functional is developed for the classical formulation for minimum surfaces and is then utilized to obtain a complementary formulation. Unlike the classical formulation in Cartesian co-ordinates, these two formulations are applicable to multi-valued surfaces and give upper and lower bounds to the exact solution when used in an approximate analysis, e.g. finite elements. By means of Lagrange multipliers, a constraint on enclosed volume is incorporated into the basic functional.

Notizen: The paper relates to a secant-relation-based acceleration method used to improve the modified Newton-Raphson scheme in which the constant stiffness matrix formed at the first iteration step is adopted to make incremental predictions for all iteration steps. An accelerator defined by minimizing a certain globally defined system error is used to scale the incremental response vector obtained by the modified Newton-Raphson prediction in iteratively updating the response vector. The performance of acceleration is dependent on the method used to evaluate the system error. A consistent approach of evaluating the system error leads to obtaining a consistent accelerator. Another approach evaluates the system error less consistently, which results in obtaining a less consistent accelerator. Numerical results of non-linear finite element analyses will be presented to show the effectiveness of this approach and to demonstrate the conclusion made by theoretical investigation regarding the convergency performances of the two accelerators proposed.

Notizen: A plasticity theory is proposed in which the yield strength not only depends on an equivalent plastic strain measure (hardening parameter), but also on the Laplacian thereof. The consistency condition now results in a differential equation instead of an algebraic equation as in conventional plasticity. To properly solve the set of non-linear differential equations the plastic multiplier is discretized in addition to the usual discretization of the displacements. For appropriate boundary conditions this formulation can also be derived from a variational principle. Accordingly, the theory is complete. The addition of gradient terms becomes significant when modelling strain-softening solids. Classical models then result in loss of ellipticity of the governing set of partial differential equations. The addition of the gradient terms preserves ellipticity after the strain-softening regime has been entered. As a result, pathological mesh dependence as obtained in finite element computations with conventional continuum models is no longer encountered. This is demonstrated by some numerical simulations.

Notizen: The invariant imbedding formulae for evaluating singular integrals on flat domains are used to analyse the singular integrals which arise in the Boundary Element Method.Although all orders of singularity are considered, the primary objective of the paper is the evaluation of Cauchy principal value integrals (CPV). Conditions for boundedness of the CPV aré derived, and evaluation techniques are presented for situations in which the singular point lies on, or is in close proximity to, an element boundary. Specific cases analysed include straight and curved element boundaries, and corners. Other numerical aspects of the formulae are also discussed.By way of example, the analysis techniques are applied to the volume integrals which arise in continuum, inelastic problems.

Notizen: A new formulation was recently proposed by the present author aimed at removing the shear and membrane locking mechanisms from the C° structural elements. The performance achieved was shown to be excellent, completely eliminating all locking problems. In some cases of C° plate and shell element applications; however, the proposed formulation was shown to yield flexible (softer than expected) models. Analysis of this behaviour revealed the presence of an internal moment redistribution mechanism with the classical formulation. The absence of this mechanism from the new formulation was found to be responsible for the potential introduction of softening effects in the elastic finite element models. In the present paper, the internal moment redistribution effect is examined analytically and the key component responsible for its development is isolated. The new formulation, as originally proposed for the C° structural elements, is modified so that the internal moment redistribution mechanism is retained, yet, with all locking mechanisms being rejected. The proposed formulation has been subjected recently to extensive numerical investigation with excellent results.

Notizen: Error estimators were derived using global-local and refined global-local finite element methods and an extrapolation technique. The proposed error estimators are to be used in estimating the global error energy norm, local error energy norm and nodal displacement error. These error estimators were applied to three numerical examples. The results clearly demonstrated that these error estimators are of high quality.

Notizen: The convergence behaviour of conjugate direction methods for Helmholtz problems with complex-valued wavenumbers is studied. The model problem is a Galerkin discretization of the scalar Helmholtz equation on square arrays of 2D and 3D, C° linear elements. A series of controlled experiments is performed which use the dimensionless wavenumber and the algebraic size of the system of equations to completely characterize the iterative performance of the solvers. The effects of algebraic size are examined as functions of both mesh refinement and mesh extension within the limits of present-day workstation computing environments. A comparison is drawn between the conjugate direction methods investigated and the equivalent time-domain solution obtained through explicit time-stepping.

Notizen: Moving-grid methods in one space dimension have become popular for solving several kinds of parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) involving fine scale structures such as steep moving fronts and emerging steep layers, pulses, shocks, etc. In two space dimensions, however, application of moving-grid methods is less trivial than in 1D. For some methods, e.g. those based on equidistributing principles, it is not even clear how to extend the underlying grid selection procedure to 2D. The moving-finite-element (MFE) method does not suffer from this drawback; its mathematical extension to 2D is trivial. However, because of the intrinsic coupling between the discretization of the PDE and the grid selection, the application of MFE, as for any other method, is not without difficulties. In this paper we describe the node movement induced by MFE for various PDEs and we indicate some problems concerning the grid structure that can result from this movement.

Notizen: In this paper, finite element formulations of convection-type problems are derived by means of an essentially physical approach. No new expressions are obtained for global matrices and vectors, but clear physical interpretations are provided for all the essential steps of conventional procedures based on the Galerkin method. The final systems of discretized equations are obtained from energy balances which yield conservative numerical models if reference is made to the conservative forms of the differential equations, or non-conservative numerical models if, instead, the non-conservative forms of the differential equations are considered.

Notizen: The application of adaptive finite element methods to the solution of transient heat conduction problems in two dimensions is investigated. The computational domain is represented by an unstructured assembly of linear triangular elements and the mesh adaptation is achieved by local regeneration of the grid, using an error estimation procedure coupled to an automatic triangular mesh generator. Two alternative solution procedures are considered. In the first procedure, the solution is advanced by explicit timestepping, with domain decomposition being used to improve the computational efficiency of the method. In the second procedure, an algorithm for constructing continuous lines which pass only once through each node of the mesh is employed. The lines are used as the basis of a fully implicit method, in which the equation system is solved by line relaxation using a block tridiagonal equation solver. The numerical performance of the two procedures is compared for the analysis of a problem involving a moving heat source applied to a convectively cooled cylindrical leading edge.

Notizen: A numerical procedure for solving the time-dependent, incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations is presented. The present method is based on a set of finite element equations of the primitive variable formulation, and a time-splitting procedure which has unique features in its formulation as well as in its evaluation from the viewpoint of efficiency and accuracy. The applicability of the proposed formulation was verified by computations and comparison with known results.

Notizen: The influence of viscous heating on forced convective heat transfer from a circular cylinder in cross flow is investigated numerically. The Reynolds number is in the range of 5-40 and the Prandtl number is 0.72, corresponding to air. The Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equations are solved in two dimensions using the streamfunction-vorticity formulation. In the energy equation the dissipation of mechanical energy into thermal energy is taken into account. All equations are cast into a non-dimensional form. The numerical solution procedure is based on second-order finite difference approximations and an implicit formulation is employed. The far field boundary conditions of the flow field are satisfied by matching to asymptotic solutions. The resulting algebraic equations are solved by an iterative relaxation technique. In particular, temperature distributions for an adiabatic wall boundary condition are presented.

Notizen: Thermal modelling of spacecraft requires approaches which can handle dominant radiative heat transfers and many special thermal control components. Present network-type thermal analysers allow simulation, especially for components with rectangular geometries, but at the expense of considerable awkwardness and much error-prone manual input. The user interfaces for pre- and postprocessing for these analysers are also very deficient. Finite element thermal analysers solve some of the analytical difficulties, but are not widely used because they lack the flexibility to simulate special operations. The Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) distributes the contributions within an element to the element nodal points. The assembly of the contributions from all elements yields a systems of energy balance equations for the nodal points of the system. Monte Carlo raytracing, in conjunction with a GFEM energy distribution to element nodal points, yields a procedure of consistent non-isothermal surface radiation exchange. This procedure reduces a source of simulation error caused by non-uniform element illumination and shading. Orbital heating, fluid flow and special analysis features are discussed. The main analysis program is interfaced to the preprocessing and postprocessing modules. Example results are given.

Notizen: The flow associated with the pouring of molten metal into moulds has been modelled based upon certain simplfying assumptions. A finite element based Navier-Stokes equation solver has been used to analyse the flow. The velocities obtained from the Navier-Stokes equation solver are used to advect a pseudo-concentration function for modelling the free fluid front. A simple problem with a known analytical solution is solved first to test the model. Subsequently, several more examples of varied geometrical configuration are modelled to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model. The Taylor-Galerkin method has been used to model the heat transfer during filling due to its advection dominated nature.

Notizen: A new class of time-stepping algorithms for strongly coupled thermomechanical problems is presented which retains the computational convenience of traditional staggered algorithms without upsetting the unconditional stability property characteristic of fully implicit (monolithic) schemes. This class of methods was first introduced by the authors (in the general context of thermoplasticity) in the USCM held at Chicago, July 1991, and in the IUTAM symposium held at Hannover, Germany, September 1991 The proposed schemes are fractional step methods associated with a two phase operator split of the full non-linear system of thermoelasticity into an adiabatic elastodynamics phase, followed by a heat conduction phase at fixed configuration. This operator split is shown to inherit the contractivity property of the full problem of evolution, thus leading to unconditionally B-stable product formula algorithms. In sharp contrast with this stability result, traditional staggered algorithms based on an isothermal mechanical phase followed by a heat conduction phase with an effective heat source are shown to lead, at best, to conditionally stable schemes. It is further shown that the actual implementation of these two classes of schemes is essentially identical. The numerical simulations presented include both dynamic and quasi-static problems and are shown to closely replicate the stability estimates and non-linear stability results derived for these two classes of staggered schemes.

Notizen: This study presents a sequential algorithm for the identification of the position s of the moving boundary of a variable one-dimensional or two-dimensional domain from discrete measurements, temperatures and fluxes, collected at the fixed boundary. The inverse problem is solved by minimization, with respect to s, of a penalized output least square criterion defined on a sliding time horizon of length τ. At every time step, several iterations are performed to estimate the unknown s. Each iteration consists in a guess of s, a computation of the corresponding value of the output y (direct model) and the criterion J, and a step towards a new estimation of s. The impact of the different parameters, space and time discretization intervals, regularization coefficient, dimension of the unknown parameter s, length of the observation horizon, choice of the observed output (temperature or flux) and choice of the direct model is thoroughly analysed for an analytical test case.

Notizen: Numerical simulation of forming processes is studied using the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation governing viscous, incompressible fluids. A review of various important aspects of forming processes is also reviewed for completeness. A penalty finite element model of the equations is developed. The finite element model is used to study the effectiveness of various constitutive models developed for metal forming and polymer processing. The element-by-element (EBE) data structure with efficient iterative solution methods is used to solve the large systems of equations that arise in the analysis of complex 3-D problems. Numerical results for problems representative of various forming processes (e.g. extrusion and solidification) are presented.

Notizen: The solution of contact problems involves great numerical efforts to satisfy non-penetration conditions. The search for numerical efficiency hence has limited the modelling of the real physical interface behaviour. Up to now mainly simple laws, usually formulated using constant coefficients, have been available to study contact problems in uncoupled from. Here a thermomechanically coupled contact element is presented which accounts for the real microscopic shape of the surfaces, the microscopic mechanism of force transmission and heat exchange. The contact element geometrical behaviour has been put together with experimental and theoretical well founded micro-mechanical and micro-thermal laws adapted to Finite Element Method (FEM) necessities. Based on these laws the macroscopic related stiffnesses are calculated and continuously updated taking into account changes in significant parameters. The linearization of the set of equations has been obtained using a consistent technique which implies computational efficiency.

Notizen: The vertical surface of a non-reactive semi-infinite solid is suddenly heated by a radiative heat flux source. The surface temperature increases and a thermal wave penetrates the solid. At the same time, the hot surface heats the neighbouring air, which begins to move upward under the influence of gravity. The events in both domains are closely connected and the compressible fluid in the boundary layer establishes a hydrodynamic and thermal coupling. Such coupling and the non-linearity in this problem require a special solution approach. A numerical technique was selected, which is based on the finite control volume method developed by Patankar and Spalding. The Patankar-Spalding method was modified to accommodate both the solid domain and the gas phase domain simultaneously. The conjugate formulation for the transient combined solid phase and gaseous boundary layer was investigated. It was found that the new conjugate method provided reliable solutions to the current problem. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that the time required for the surface temperature to attain a specified value was inversely proportional to the square of the radiative heat flux.

Notizen: The ignition of explosives and illuminants can be controlled and delayed by using a combination of different pyrotechnical compositions. For quick-burning compositions the burning velocity is mostly determined by the properties of the compositions and by the geometry of the case: For low burning velocity, however, both the initial temperature and the heat transfer from the compositions are important factors. The influence of a phase transition process in the composition is here a factor important for the burning velocity.By a suitable design of the case containing the pyrotechnical compositions and a suitable choice of these compositions, performance, as well as safety, can be improved. The design work is complex and comprises numerical simulations, laboratory tests and full scale tests. Generally it is preferable to start with a numerical analysis of the problem. The number of laboratory and full scale tests must always be minimized as they are time-consuming and expensive, and thus numerical models are essential as a cheap and reliable tool in the design work.Statistical design of experiments has been used to reduce the number of numerical calculations required for evaluating the influence of different parameters essential for the burning velocity. From these calculations a limited number of laboratory and full scale experiments are planned. The number of tests as well as the cost will be reduced.Special procedures based on the finite element method are used both for the phase transition process and for the combustion process. The latent heat of a region with phase change material is concentrated at the nodes of the elements in that region. A fixed finite element mesh is used. The temperature of a node with latent heat is kept at the melting temperature during the transition process. The heat of combustion is associated with the finite elements. The combustion starts when the mean temperature of such an element exceeds the ignition temperature of the composition and ceases when all the heat of combustion in the element is released or if the temperature of the element falls below the ignition temperature. The elements with ongoing combustion form a reaction zone, which propagates into the pyrotechnical composition. In the present study the method is applied to a test case in order to investigate the applicability of the method.

Notizen: An analytical method is developed to study the radiative energy transfer in a non-grey-gas layer by using a Monte Carlo method. The gas is composed of water vapour, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The profiles of the monochromatic absorption coefficient of each component gas are calculated by using the Elsasser model and wide band model parameters derived by Edwards. The validity of this method is confirmed by comparing the results of the gas emissivity with the ones obtained from Hottel's chart. By using this method, radiative energy transfer is analysed through a one dimensional gas layer between two parallel solid walls with different temperatures. From the analyses, it is shown that the temperature profile in the gas layer is not properly estimated by using Hottel's gas-emissivity charts, though the net heat flux between the bounding walls is estimated properly.

Notizen: A finite element numerical modelling procedure for simulating combined flow and heat transfer in a squeeze casting process is developed where the flow model is based on simple mass conservation. The coincident node method is used to model the thermal interface with metal advancement over the relatively colder die surface. The effect of pressure on the solidus and liquidus temperatures is built in based on the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and the thermophysical properties of enthalpy and thermal conductivity are affected by this pressure. For the casting material concerned, the effect of pressure on thermophysical properties was found to be small, having only a marginal effect on the part solidification.

Notizen: Potential problems can be solved by analytical methods. However, for three-dimensional structures of geometrically complex shape with non-linear boundary conditions, numerical methods have to be applied. The most popular technique is the finite element method, which is used throughout the engineering community. The main advantage of this method lies in the application to arbitrarily shaped structures, which requires the use of non-orthogonal meshes. More recently, the boundary element method has been proven to be a competitive tool in the field of potential problems. In other research areas different numerical methods are used, for example in fluid mechanics the finite volume or the finite difference methods. But the application to irregularly shaped domains is difficult compared to the finite element and boundary element methods. The big drawback of these methods is not a poor numerical quality, but the absence of an element concept. In some cases, the results are even better compared to the other methods. Therefore, the main subject of this paper is the introduction of the element concept not only for the popular finite element method, but also for the finite difference and finite volume methods, which provides a high degree of geometric flexibility.

Notizen: A new approach to the finite element mesh generation for two-dimensional steady state thermal problems of conduction and convection is presented. Unlike other approaches, the proposed technique incorporates the information about the object geometry as well as the boundary and loading conditions to generate an a-priori finite element mesh which is more refined around the critical regions of the problem domain. A blackboard architecture expert system is developed to intelligently identify critical regions and to choose the proper mesh size for them by performing an approximate heat flux calculation. From the results of the blackboard system, nodes are generated in the problem domain using the new concept of wave propagation. The wave propagation technique is fully automatic and does not require any user-provided information except the data which define the object geometry and boundary conditions. After nodes are generated, well-shaped triangular elements are formed ensuring the Delaunay property. During the triangulation process and to reduce the computation time for checking the overlapping problem, a new and efficient algorithm is proposed which defines a certain range only in which a potential triangular element might overlap the previously generated elements and boundary segments. Several examples are presented and discussed. When incorporated into and compared with the traditional approach to the adaptive finite element analysis, it is expected that the proposed approach, which starts the process with near-optimal initial meshes, will result in lower levels of error and faster convergence of the solution to the desired accuracy in less time and at less cost.

Notizen: A novel spectral procedure for the numerical solution of non-linear boundary value problems is presented. The discrete spectral equations are solved by an iterative algorithm using space-domain preconditioning. The preconditioning operator is obtained by spatial weighting (or windowing) of the exact differential operator.Convergence behaviour of the iterative solution is investigated using an eigenvalue analysis. Theoretical estimates for the convergence rate and accuracy are compared with that achieved in a numerical application - a non-linear boundary value problem from semiconductor device modelling. The method combines the infinite-order exponential accuracy of spectral discretizations with the sparse structure of finite difference equations. This offers numerical advantages in comparison to previously developed Fourier-Galerkin algorithms, particularly important for physically ill-conditioned and strongly non-linear problems. The tradeoff of achievable accuracy versus computer time is easily controlled, thus making essential speed-ups possible for moderate accuracy requirements.

Notizen: In this paper the application of the TLM method to electromagnetic scattering problems is investigated. To achieve the full computational benefits of using a time-domain numerical method, pulse excitation can be applied together with Fourier transformation of an output impulse response to yield frequency-domain results over a wide bandwidth. The configuration of the mesh is the same as that used in FD-TD scattering simulations (i.e., separation of the simulation space into total and scattered field regions). To terminate the exterior boundaries of the mesh, absorbing boundary conditions are applied to absorb the outward travelling waves. The effect of the absorbing boundaries on both time- and frequency-domain results is investigated. Frequency-domain scattered far-field patterns are presented for perfectly conducting square and circular cylinders illuminated by an incident plane wave (TM case). Forward and back scattering cross-section results obtained from a single TLM simulation indicate both the accuracy and efficiency of the method for calculating frequency-domain results over a wide bandwidth.

Notizen: This paper reports the results of a study of an error parameter, m, which has been proposed as a measure for determining the effects on accuracy of the basic assumptions upon which TLM modelling of diffusion and heat flow has been founded. The nature of the m parameter is studied in detail by using a two-dimensional thermal diffusion problem. The use of m in the implementation of automatic timestepping is discussed in a practical three-dimensional engineering problem.

Notizen: Purpose of this work is to present a new macromodelling approach for the simulation at the device level of large MOS integrated circuits, requiring only marginal modifications to be implemented in the widely used circuit simulator SPICE. This method results in a substantial saving in computing time and guarantees the same accuracy of SPICE. A prototype simulator based on this method has been developed and used to analyse several significant circuits. In addition, since the method is particularly suitable to be implemented in parallel computers, some results obtained with the CRAY-YMP/432 computer are provided.

Notizen: Under wideband and especially ultrawideband (short pulse) excitation, the electromagnetic fields, after encounters with a propagation or scattering environment, reveal features which range from highly resolved spikes or dips to smooth oscillations at early and late observation times, respectively. Time-domain (TD) analytic modelling should be structured around wave objects which relate features (observables) in data to distinct features in the environment. A strategy to this end, named observable-based parametrization (OBP), is proposed here. The rules are learned from frequency- and time-domain asymptotics applies to spatial and spectral domain representations of tractable prototype problems. This leads to self-consistent hybrid combinations OBP-TD travelling (wavefront) and oscillatory (resonant) synthesizing basis fields; the latter include novel TD leaky modes for guiding wave channels and TD Bragg modes for periodic arrays. These concepts are illustrated by examples.

Notizen: An approach for numerically integrating the partial differential equations describing passive physical systems consists in modelling the continuous-domain physical system by means of a passive discrete-domain system. As has recently been shown, this can be achieved, in particular also for Maxwell's equations, by means of the same principles as known from multidimensional wave digital filters, which offers a number of important advantages. The present paper deals specifically with the application of the approach to Maxwell's equations and supplements corresponding results previously published.

Notizen: There is an increasing interest in the numerical modelling of physical and biological processes using cellular automata or cellular systems. One of the main advantages in using the concept of cellular systems is the inherent high degree of parallelism. The purpose of the contribution is to formally relate two different areas: time-domain modelling of physical processes using cellular systems and massive parallel implementations. At first, an overview of applications of cellular systems in computation theory and in modelling of physical systems and an overview of implementations of cellular systems is given. The subsequent sections address the following two questions: (1) Which class of algorithms can be interpreted as cellular systems. (2) Can cellular systems be efficiently simulated on a given parallel architecture. Results concerning these issues are presented.

Notizen: The paper provides an extension to the one-dimensional TLM diffusion model. The extended diffusion node presented here models the exact transport equation with diffusion drift and recombination of charge carriers in semiconductors. A general algorithm for providing a numerical solution to the transport phenomena is also presented here. The analytical solution for infinitely long semiconductors is compared with the TLM numerical results.

Notizen: In order to efficiently store the information of a special class of matrices, a very useful algorithm has been derived and applied to the subsectional basis function approach to the method of moments. The algorithm represents a simple law of mapping and allows a reduction in the required computational storage by several orders of magnitude.
