    Notes: The Gauss-Jordan inversion algorithm requires 0(n3) arithmetic operations. In some practical applications, like state estimation or short-circuit calculation in power systems, the given matrix is sparse and only part of the inverse is needed. Most frequently in the diagonal dominant case this is the diagonal. There are two ways to exploit sparsity to determine elements of the inverse: 1Columnwise inversion via the solution of sparse linear systems with columns of the unit matrix as right-hand sides.2Application of the algorithm of Takahashi et al6.The latter algorithm arises very naturally from multiplying the left- and right-hand factors of the Zollenkopf bifactorization in reverse order. We indicate how computing time can be gained in the important symmetric diagonal dominant case if only part of the diagonal is needed and compare computing times of the method of Takahasi et al.6 with several variants of columnwise inversion. Whereas most of the theory holds for general matrices, experiments are performed on the symmetric diagonal dominant case. For band matrices the operation count is 0(n) both for computing a column of the inverse by columnwise inversion and the diagonal by the algorithm of Takahashi et al6.

    Notes: Correlation is a measure of similarity between two functions. When two functions are exactly similar and equal, the correlation between them is maximum. The correlation concept can be used for system design, e.g. the four-bar mechanism, the slider crank mechanism, etc. The motion generated by four-bar linkage can be expressed as a function of link dimensions, input and output angles. The product of generated function and desired function gives correlation. The best possible design would be when the deviation of actual correlation from its maximum value (i.e. 100 per cent correlation) is least. This concept, in fact, leads to a modified least squares approach and based on this an objective function is formulated and minimized to give link dimensions. The results obtained are better than the least squares technique, and this is illustrated through different numerical examples.

    Notes: A test problem is presented which provides a realistic challenge for computational techniques designed for the prediction of temperature distributions in melting/freezing processes.     Notes: In transient analysis it is generally thought that small time steps can only improve the accuracy, because standard stability theorems limit the maximum time step for a given mesh size.     Notes: A multiple-parameter reduced basis technique and a problem-adaptive computational algorithm are presented for the bifurcation and post-buckling analyses of composite plates subjected to combined loadings. The computational algorithm can be conveniently divided into three distinct stages. The first stage is that of determining the stability boundary. The plate is discretized by using displacement finite element models and the analysis region is reduced by exploiting the special symmetries exhibited by the response of the plate. The vector of unknown nodal displacements is expressed as a linear combination of a small number of path derivatives (derivatives of the nodal displacements with respect to path parameters), and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to approximate the finite element equations by a small system of algebraic equations. The reduced equations are used to determine the stability boundary of the plate.In the second stage, a nonllnear solution in the vicinity of the stability boundary is obtained by using a bifurcation buckling mode as a predictor, and a set of reduced equations is generated. In the third stage, the reduced equations are used to trace post-buckling paths corresponding to various combinations of the load parameters.The potential of the proposed approach is discussed and its effectiveness is demonstrated by means of a numerical example of laminated composite plate subjected to combined compressive and shear loadings.

    Notes: A triangular cylindrical shell element based on discrete Kirchhoff theory is developed. It is a three-node, 27-degrees-of-freedom element using cubic polynomials for the tangential and normal displacement interpolations. The normal rotations are independently interpolated by quadratic polynomials. The formulation is capable of modelling general anisotropy representative of multi-layered, multi-directionally oriented composite construction. The numerical results indicate that the solution for displacements and stresses of cylindrical shells converge monotonically and rapidly to those based on deep shell theory.

    Notes: A numerical method for solving finite dimensional structural optimization problems with constraints on natural frequency and on buckling is formulated. The method treats nondifferentiable repeated eigenvalues that have been shown to systematically arise in structural optimization. Recent results on differentiability of eigenvalues are used to develop a generalized gradient projection method for structural optimization. The algorithm is shown to overcome technical difficulties associated with nondifferentiability of repeated eigenvalues. The method is used to solve buckling and vibration optimization problems in which repeated eigenvalues occur.

    Notes: The computational methods used to predict and optimize the thermal-structural behaviour of aerospace vehicle structures are reviewed. In general, two classes of algorithms, implicit and explicit, are used in transient thermal analysis of structures. Each of these two methods has its own merits. Due to the different time scales of the mechanical and thermal responses, the selection of a time integration method can be a difficult yet critical factor in the efficient solution of such problems.Therefore mixed time integration methods for transient thermal analysis of structures are being developed.     Notes: It is well known that one way to treat nonlinear periodic dynamical systems governed by ordinary differential equations is to find first the corresponding point mappings. This approach has many advantages but it has a main obstacle in that it is difficult to obtain the exact mapping except in very special cases. Presented in this paper is a procedure which allows us to determine the point mapping in a polynomial form up to any specific degree of accuracy. The procedure when applied to linear periodic systems reduces to the one proposed by Friedmann et al.22 After presenting the algorithm for finding the point mappings, the method is applied to several problems in order to study the dynamical properties of the systems and to demonstrate the usefulness of the method.

    Notes: The mini-max dual method ia applied for solving the material selection structural optimization problems. A somewhat general objective function is introduced to consider structural weight and material cost simultaneously. It is expressed by the sum of scaled structural weight and material cost. The present formulation can yield minimum cost and minimum weight designs as two distinct special cases. It is shown that practically useful intermediate optimal designs can exist between the two extremes. Only truss structures are considered as a representative example. One numerical example is provided to illustrate the change in optimal material distribution when various objective functions are employed. A particular advantage in using the dual method for the material selection problem is also described.

    Notes: A new technique for the solution of singular integral equations is proposed, where the unknown function may have a particular singular behaviour, different from the one defined by the dominant part of the singular integral equation. In this case the integral equation may be discretized by two different quadratures defined in such a way that the collocation points of the one correspond to the integration points of the other. In this manner the system is reduced to a n × n system of discrete equations and the method preserves, for the same number of equations, the same polynomial accuracy. The main advantage of the method is that it can proceed without using special collocation points. This new technique was tested in a series of typical examples and yielded results which are in good agreement with already existing solutions.

    Notes: A uniform linear beam in a uniform linear ambient medium is studied. The beam performs stationary harmonic damped nonsynchronous space vibration in simultaneous tension, torsion, bending and shear in the presence of a large static axial load. Hysteretic and viscous dampings of the beam material and ambient medium are considered. Generalized complex Koloušek functions are derived. A 12 × 12 complex symmetric stiffness matrix is established for a supported beam member excited at its ends by prescribed harmonic translations and rotations which have the same frequency but may be out of phase. This matrix allows for an exact analysis of nonproportionally damped built-up beam structures, thus avoiding assumed mode shapes and lumped or consistent masses. A general notation is suggested. Numerical examples are given, including applications of the computer program SFVIBAT-DAMP.

    Notes: In this paper we extend predictor-corrector methods, commonly used for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (o.d.e.s), to parabolic partial differential equations (p.d.e.s), typically of the form ut = auxx + ƒ(u, ux, x, t).We describe linear multistep methods for p.d.e.s, the nonlinear algebraic equations arising from implicit formulae being solved using a corrector analogous to those used for o.d.e.s. A sufficient condition for convergence of the iteration is then derived and is found, in most cases, to be far less restrictive than that obtained from the usual method of lines approach. Numerical results are presented to investigate the necessity of this condition. They also indicate that we can accelerate convergence by reducing the time increment. This allows us to achieve convergence within a prescribed number of iterations and so to construct PCm methods corresponding to P(EC)m methods for o.d.e.s. Numerical results are also given to test the absolute stability of the Crank-Nicolson corrector for various predictors P, and iterations, m.

Indeed they appear as an ‘enriched’ version of the standard piecewise quadratic six-node element. This work is divided into two parts.     Notes: An elasto-plastic analysis of thin plates and shells by means of the finite element displacement method is considered for anisotropic materials, using the Semiloof curved shell element. The elasto-plastic analysis is based on the Huber-Mises yield criterion extended by Hill for anisotropic materials. The yield function is generalized by introducing anisotropic parameters of plasticity which are updated during the material strain hardening history.Numerical examples are presented and compared with available solutions.     Notes: The Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) algorithm for multivariable unconstrained nonlinear function minimization is implemented on a desk microcomputer - the Hindustan Computers MICRO-2200 - with a floppy disk memory extension peripheral. The program is developed using the programming keys of the system. The program is closely based on FMFP, a well-known FORTRAN subroutine of the algorithm. Among the exercises performed are two standard nonlinear programming (NLP) test problems, namely the Rosenbrock and Wood function minimization and two SUMT (Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique) illustration problems in structural optimization, i.e. two-bar and three-bar truss weight minimization examples. Experience bears out the potential of desk calculating systems as tools in nonlinear programming algorithm research. Also, the small-scale structural optimization capability afforded by such systems is expected to be of significance in teaching and preliminary design contexts.

    Notes: In this paper a new concept for development of algorithms for optimal design of engineering systems is presented. The basic idea is to use upper and lower bounds on optimum cost to develop iterative search strategies. The main feature of the concept is that it does not rely on one-dimensional search to compute a step size at any design iteration. Implication of the feature is that the algorithms based on this concept require evaluation of constraint functions only once at any design iteration. This is highly desirable for optimal design of engineering systems because evaluation of functions for such systems is very expensive due to their implicit dependence on design variables. An algorithm based on the new concept is derived in the paper. Several new step sizes are introduced and their relation to proper reduced optimal design problems are presented. A new step size based on the constant cost requirement at some design iterations is introduced. Numerical aspects for the algorithm are also presented. Based on the new algorithm, a general-purpose computer code GRP2 is developed. The code is used to solve several problems to gain experience and insight for the algorithm. Numerical experience with examples is discussed. It is concluded that algorithms based on bounding optimum cost have substantial potential for applications in optimal design of engineering systems.

    Notes: A decomposition procedure is proposed in this paper for solving a class of large-scale optimum design problems for perfectly-plastic structures under several alternative loading conditions. The conventional finite element method is used to cast the problem into a finite dimensional constrained nonlinear programming problem. Structures of practically meaningful size and complexity tend to give rise to a large number of variables and constraints in the corresponding mathematical model. The difficulty is that the state-of-the-art mathematical programming theory does not provide reliable and efficient ways of solving large-scale constrained nonlinear programming problems. The natural idea to deal with the large-scale structural problem is somehow to decompose the problem into a collection of small-size problems each of which represents an analysis of the behaviour of each finite element under a single loading condition. This paper proposes one such way of decomposition based on duality theory and a recently developed iterative algorithm called the proximal point algorithm.

    Notes: The dynamic analysis of structures by the standard finite element method introduces additional inaccuracies into the solution which are not present when the method is used for static analyses. These inaccuracies can arise from two sources: (i) the element formulation and (ii) the reduction of the size of the matrices by a static condensation (i.e. using the Guyan method1,2). The errors in both cases are caused by neglecting frequency-dependent terms in the functions relating the displacements at any point in the structure to the displacements at certain fixed points (i.e. nodes in the element formulation and ‘masters’ in the condensation). A new method of solution is proposed in this paper in which the frequency-dependent terms are retained implicitly by using dynamic stiffness matrices defined at a number of fixed frequencies. The dynamic stiffness matrices may be condensed efficiently to a relatively small number of master degrees-of-freedom using a front solution algorithm. The final stage in the solution uses these matrices to synthesize a high-order eigenvalue problem. A method of solving such an eigenvalue problem, of arbitrary order, is described in a separate paper.3 Numerical examples are given to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method compared with conventional methods of solution.

    Notes: This paper describes an element reordering algorithm which is suitable for use with a frontal solution package. The procedure is shown to generate efficient element numberings for a wide variety of test examples. In an effort to obtain an optimum elimination order, the algorithm first renumbers the nodes, and then uses this result to resequence the elements. This intermediate step is necessary because of the nature of the frontal solution procedure, which assembles variables on an element-by-element basis but eliminates them node by node. To renumber the nodes, a modified version of the King1 algorithm is used. In order to minimize the number of nodal numbering schemes that need to be considered, the starting nodes are selected automatically by using some concepts from graph theory. Once the optimum numbering sequence has been ascertained, the elements are then reordered in an ascending sequence of their lowest-numbered nodes. This ensures that the new elimination order is preserved as closely as possible.For meshes that are composed of a single type of high-order element, it is only necessary to consider the vertex nodes in the renumbering process. This follows from the fact that mesh numberings which are optimal for low-order elements are also optimal for high-order elements. Significant economies in the reordering strategy may thus be achieved. A computer implementation of the algorithm, written in FORTRAN IV, is given.

The displacement and stress field produced by a circumferential ring load in an infinite elastic body are derived and used as the fundamental solution to establish the governing integral equations. For the elasto-plastic case, linear boundary elements and bilinear quadrilateral internal cells are used for discretization of these equations.     Notes: This paper describes a method for introducing line searches into the arc-length solution procedure. Such line searches may be used at each iteration to calculate an optimum scalar step-length which scales the normal iterative vector. In practice, a loose tolerance is provided so that on many iterations the line searches are avoided. However on ‘difficult iterations’, the line searches are shown to lead to a substantial improvement in the convergence characteristics. A simple single-parameter acceleration is also developed using line search concepts. The new arc-length method is applied to both the geometrically nonlinear analysis of shallow shells and the materially nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete beams and slabs. Significant improvements are demonstrated in relation to the standard arc-length method.

    Notes: The authors' aim was the development of a suitable procedure for the structural design of railway vehicles within an existing general purpose finite element package. A previous application to railway vehicles was based on the use of a sequence of linear programming steps incorporating move limits on the design variables. This approach was slow and in other fields mathematical programming techniques tended to give way to methods based on optimality criteria.Nevertheless because of its simplicity of concept, and because some apparently successful alternatives to the move limit idea were available, the use of linear programming was returned to and the method is now incorporated in the British Rail finite element program NEWPAC. Couched in terms of inverse variables and using linearized forms of the stress constraints, the linear programming approach converges with the optimality criteria method.     Notes: A family of high-order, conforming triangles for the finite element analysis of plate bending problems is developed, using the displacement method of formulation.The development proceeds in two steps. A family of non-conforming triangles, based on polynomial expansions of order 〉4 is first generated, and its performance found to be unacceptable. Nodal variables for the non-conforming family are selected from the set w, wx, wy, wn. The elements are then made to conform, by adding a twist nodal variable wnt at the mid-side nodes. Rational functions define the three additional degrees-of-freedom. Simple and very accurate procedures solve the problems associated with the use of such functions.Numerical results are presented for the conforming triangles of order 4 and 7, following a brief description of the two elements. A listing of the explicit shape functions for the quartic triangle is included.The numerical results are very good. In particular, they are superior per degree-of-freedom to the results predicted by the various non-conforming and conforming, cubic and related elements at present used in computer packages. Together with a similar performance by the quintic member10 of the family, they validate the proposed theoretical solution.

    Notes: A recursive, shape controlling triangulation method is described. The method is designed to produce a labelling which implies reduced fill in the solution of (finite element) equations assembled from such a triangulation and allows simple implementation of a nested disection algorithm for irregular domains.     Notes: This paper presents boundary integral equation procedures for calculating the added mass matrix required to determine hydroelastic vibrational modes of tanks or immersed structures. The liquid is assumed inviscid and incompressible and no surface waves are admitted. Two symmetric variational formulations of the boundary integral equation are derived, including the free surface condition and possible conditions of symmetry.     Notes: The design of nuclear facilities requires dynamic analysis to evaluate their performance during an earthquake. In modal analysis, a method recommended for dynamic analysis by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure are commonly calculated using a stiffness matrix computed using the finite element method.A primary goal of this study was to design a finite element mesh, capable of modelling a reactor structure, with a minimum number of nodes and elements. This is necessary since analysis using a mesh fine enough to include all of the structural elements is not feasible because of exorbitant computer time and storage requirements. It was found that for lateral motion, a representative reactor structure could be accurately modelled using a simplified mesh with only one isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral element per floor. In this mesh essentially infinite springs must be placed between the masses at each floor level to prevent internal movements of the lumped masses within the quadratic quadrilateral elements.It was also found that a structure with rigid heavy bottom floors and a light top floor can be subjected to large displacements in the top floor during earthquakes. It was concluded that the properties of that light top floor (especially shear area) controls the value of the fundamental frequency of the building.

    Notes: In this paper the use of strongly stretched finite difference grids is examined in detail for a simple model equation. Numerical solutions of this equation demonstrate the overall second-order accuracy of the difference approximations. The behaviour of two simple iterative methods, S.O.R. and stationary A.D.I. is discussed for several cases with strong grid stretching and with variable diffusion coefficients. The results show that grid compression near to boundaries can greatly enhance the rates of convergence of these iterative methods, whereas with grid compression in the centre the rate of convergence can be extremely slow. The case of a diffusion coefficient which increases away from the boundaries of a region is analogous to grid compression in the centre and again the convergence rates can degrade considerably.

    Notes: The virtual crack extension method (VCE) is a very effective tool with finite elements for the accurate evaluation of stress intensity factors in two- or three-dimensional structures. The method utilizes the concept of extending any node on the crack profile in any required direction and by any required amount. A new facility stores a relevant substructure of crack tip stiffnesses so that any number of restarts, each with a new set of extensions, can be performed. Different nodes around three-dimensional crack profiles can be considered, either at vertex or midside node positions. The extension of the vertex nodes, in particular, also involves moving adjacent midside nodes along the profile, and different ways of effecting this, together with the calculation of the relevant area change, have been introduced and are described along with illustrative examples.

    Notes: Boundary integral equation methods are presented for the solution of some two-dimensional phase change problems. Convection may enter through boundary conditions, but cannot be considered within phase boundaries. A general formulation based on space-time Green's functions is developed using the complete heat equation, followed by a simpler formulation using the Laplace equation. The latter is pursued and applied in detail. An elementary, noniterative system is constructed, featuring linear interpolation over elements on a polygonal boundary. Nodal values of the temperature gradient normal to a phase change boundary are produced directly in the numerical solution. The system performs well against basic analytical solutions, using these values in the interphase jump condition, with the simplest formulation of the surface normal at boundary vertices. Because the discretized surface changes automatically to fit the scale of the problem, the method appears to offer many of the advantages of moving mesh finite element methods. However, it only requires the manipulation of a surface mesh and solution for surface variables. In some applications, coarse meshes and very large time steps may be used, relative to those which would be required by fixed grid domain methods. Computations are also compared to original lab data, describing two-dimensional soil freezing with a time-dependent boundary condition. Agreement between simulated and measured histories is good.

    Notes: The heating (or cooling) of the rock adjacent to water flowing through a crevice is of interest in certain geothermal studies. For many purposes, only the rock temperature at the rock-water interface is needed. The fact that the convective heat transfer coefficient is a function of time in the case of unsteady flow takes this problem out of the strictly classical domain.Several methods of solution are described. An approach in which the heat equation is solved, under appropriate side conditions, by standard finite difference techniques is shown to be satisfactory but rather wasteful because much unneeded information concerning internal rock temperatures must be obtained. Several integral equations of Volterra type are derived that provide the temperature only at the interface. Two numerical approaches to their solution are described: one quite classical and only partially effective; the other an apparently new algorithm that is fast and efficient. Analytical upper and lower bounds on the temperature are obtained and serve to demonstrate that this numerical device is also very accurate.The algorithm is applicable to a wide class of Volterra integral equations of the second kind. A brief discussion of the possible future uses of this scheme and the need for additional research is given.

    Notes: A simple two-step corrective technique is presented in this paper for evaluating stress intensity factors in crack problems. In the first step an approximate evaluation of the stress intensity factor was made by considering the cracked plate to be of infinite size. The stresses of the problem were relaxed by the stresses of the infinite body which corresponds to the approximate value of the stress intensity factor. The expected discrepancy in the value of SIF by the infinite plate approximation was corrected in the second step where the existing residual stresses are equilibrated at the cracked plate by using any of the conventional finite element techniques and the corrective value of the stress intensity factor is calculated by using an appropriate collocation formula. The method was applied to three typical plane problems of cracked plates with satisfactory results.

    Notes: A method is proposed for the approximate evaluation of normal displacements and normal stresses on the plane of two coplanar cracks located inside an infinite isotropic elastic solid and subjected to normal internal pressure. The formulation results in a single integral equation for the unknown normal stresses on the plane of the cracks. Numerical results are given for the stress intensity factor KI of two coplanar circular cracks and two coplanar elliptical cracks opened up under a uniform internal pressure.

    Notes: In this study, three boundary element method approaches are compared by solving a typical problem in linear elastodynamics. The first approach formulates and solves the problem in the real time domain in conjunction with a time-stepping algorithm. The other two approaches formulate and solve the problem in the Laplace and the Fourier transformed domains, which necessitates a numerical inversion of the results to the time domain. The results obtained compare favourably with available analytic solutions. A detailed tabulation of the computer time and memory requirements of each approach is presented.

    Notes: An elasto-plastic analysis of anisotropic plates and shells is undertaken by means of the finite element displacement method. A thick shell formulation accounting for shear deformation is considered, which is based on a degenerate three-dimensional continuum element. The accommodation of variable material properties, not only along the surface of the structure but also through the thickness, is made possible by a discrete layered approach. Although isoparametric elements of the Serendipity family give satisfactory solutions for thick and moderately thin shells the results exhibit ‘locking’ for an increasing ratio of span to thickness. To develop a numerical model which is applicable to thick or thin plates and shells, the nine-node Lagrangian element and the Heterosis element are also introduced into the present model. Plastic yielding is based on the Huber-Mises yield surface extended by Hill for anisotropic materials. The yield function is generalized by introducing anisotropic parameters of plasticity which are updated during the material strain hardening history. Numerical examples are presented and compared with available solutions. The effects of anisotropy on these solutions are also discussed.

    Notes: This paper presents a geometrically nonlinear formulation using total lagrangian approach for the three-dimensional curved shell elements. The basic element geometry is constructed using the coordinates of the middle surface nodes and the mid-surface nodal point normals. The element displacement field is described using three translations of the mid-surface nodes and the two rotations about the local axes. The existing shell element formulations are restricted to small nodal rotations between two successive load increments. The element formulation presented here removes such restrictions. This is accomplished by retaining nonlinear nodal rotation terms in the definition of the displacement field and the consistent derivation of the element properties. The formulation presented here is very general and yet can be made specific by selecting proper nonlinear functions representing the effects of nodal rotations. The element properties are derived and presented in detail. Numerical examples are also presented to demonstrate the behaviour and the accuracy of the elements.

    Notes: When a homogeneous elastic continuum is modelled by a non-uniform finite element grid, the differences in the size of adjacent finite elements can cause a spurious wave reflection which does not exist in the continuum. Extending previous studies in which the spurious wave reflection was investigated for the case of two uniform grids with a sudden element size change from one grid to the other, the present study deals with the case when the two uniform grids of different element sizes are separated by a transition zone through which the element size varies gradually, either by a geometric progression or by an arithmetic progression. The solution is carried out in complex variables and numerical plots of the results are given. When the ratio of wavelength to the largest element size is as low as 4 : 1, the spurious wave reflection is very significant, while for the ratios over 10 : 1 it is insignificant. Inserting a transition zone with gradually varying element size between the two uniform parts of the grid somewhat mitigates the phenomenon of spurious reflection, but this is significant only when the ratio of element sizes in the uniform grids is small (less than about 1·5 : 1). Varying the element size throughout the transition zone in an arithmetic progression seems slightly better than in a geometric progression. The spurious wave reflection is less pronounced for higher-order elements, in particular for linear strain elements as compared to constant strain elements. The spurious reflection is also less severe for consistent mass than for lumped mass.

    Notes: The method of differential quadrature is demonstrated by solving the two-dimensional Poisson equation. The results for three test problems are compared with the exact analytical solutions and the numerical solutions obtained by others for the Galerkin, the control-volume and the five-point finite difference methods. The method of differential quadrature leads to more accurate results for comparable levels of computational effort.
