Notes: Analogous to the localization of the wave function of an electron in a random potential (Anderson localization), in the macroscopic system of magnetoelastic waves (MEWs) propagating in a highly magnetostrictive string exhibiting the giant ΔE effect, the piling-up of MEWs into a wave-packet in a restricted small region of the string is expected. This wave-packet is subject to hopping in a discontinuous wave by applying a magnetic field due to the change in the local elastic states caused by the ΔE effect. From this expectation, a theoretical analysis was performed focusing on the derivation of localization conditions of MEWs. The analysis was carried out using a one-dimensional string model having high magnetostriction. The string is assumed to be composed of random chains with (1) alloy-type disorder (random weights of masses with equal spacings) and (2) liquid-type disorder (random spacings of masses with equal weights). For the elastic and magnetoelastic constants of the string, the value of Fe78Si10B12 amorphous wire (Unitika) were used in the calculations. No substantial changes in the localization states were not recognized in both modes. The analysis revealed that, when the change of the apparent Young's modulus with magnetic field ΔE is 28%, the localized MEWs are subject to hopping conserving their wave identities (eigenfrequencies and eigenstates). This result in considered to originate from the changes in the disorder conditions to support the localization of MEWs. To confirm the above theoretical prediction experimentally, MEW properties have been measured by using Fe78Si10B12 amorphous wires connecting weights made of leads to form the random chain structure. The localized MEWs are, indeed, observed by detecting the local vibrations of the wires. Theoretical and experimental results will be presented in detail at the conference. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Organic thin films of copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) and aluminum tris-8-hydroxyquinline (Alq3) were fabricated via KrF laser ablation. In spite of poor crystallinity exhibited in the reconstructed organic films, the CuPc film still works as a hole-transport layer in electroluminescence cells based on the CuPc and Alq3 layers. Electroluminescence at ∼500 nm was obtained with a low initiation voltage of ∼12 V. There is no significant difference in electroluminescence performance for devices fabricated via laser ablation and thermal evaporation. Emission at ∼600 nm caused by energy transfer from Alq3 to 4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) is also observed from a DCM-doped Alq3 emission layer. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: Nitric oxide synthase activity is increased in the stomach in association with Helicobacter pylori infection and portal hypertension, but the mechanism by which nitric oxide contributes to mucosal damage remains unclear. Aim: To examine whether nitric oxide injures gastric mucosal cells and whether cellular glutathione affects nitric oxide-induced cytotoxicity. Methods: A confluent monolayer of RGM-1 gastric mucosal cells was exposed to nitric oxide donors (NOC5 or NOC12). Cell viability was determined by trypan blue dye exclusion, lactate dehydrogenase release and supravital staining with Hoechst 33342 and propidium iodide. The kinetics of the reduced/oxidized forms of glutathione were also measured, as well as the effect of glutathione-depletion or glutathione-precursor treatment on nitric oxide-induced cytotoxicity. Results: Excess exogenous nitric oxide produced by NOC5 or NOC12 induced necrosis in RGM-1 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. The level of reduced glutathione drastically decreased prior to the loss of cell viability and remained low, but oxidized glutathione was not affected. Glutathione depletion increased necrosis of both NOCs in an NOC-concentration-related fashion, while pre-treatment with γ-glutamylcysteine ethyl ester reduced their necrotic susceptibility. Conclusion: Exogenous nitric oxide induced necrosis in gastric mucosal cells, and intracellular reduced glutathione protects gastric mucosal cells from damage by nitric oxide.

Notes: Summary The plasmodium of the true slime moldPhysarum polycephalum, which shows various oscillatory phenomena, can be regarded as a collective of nonlinear oscillators. Partial bodies in the plasmodium, which are assumed to be nonlinear oscillators, are mutually connected by microscale tubes named plasmodial strand. The interactions among the oscillators can be strongly affected by the geometry and the dimension of the tube network. Investigation of the collective behavior under the condition that the configuration of the network can be manipulated gives significant information on the characteristics of the plasmodium from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. In this study, we have developed a new method to control the geometry and the tube dimension of the plasmodium with a microfabricated structure. It is shown that the geometry of the plasmodium can be manipulated with a microstructure which is fabricated of ultrathick photoresist resin by photolithographic processes. In order to confirm that not only the geometry but also the dimension of the tubes can be controlled with the microstructure, we observed the cross section of the patterned plasmodium with a three-dimensional internal-structure microscope. By observing the oscillatory behavior of the partial bodies of the patterned plasmodium, it was confirmed that the coupling strength between two oscillators, which corresponds to the dimension of the plasmodial strand, can be controlled by the microstructure. It is concluded that the present method is suitable for further studies of the network of Physarum plasmodium as a collective nonlinear oscillator system.

Notes: Abstract Microbiochemical reactors having two inlet ports and one outlet port were fabricated on a silicon wafer by means of anisotropic etching in order to develop a parallel and automatic experimental system for cell-free translation. Using cell-free extract prepared from Escherichia coli, we tested the reactor for the translation of polyuridylic acid and MS2 phage RNA, and found that polypeptide and protein syntheses could be proceeded according to the genetic codes on the mRNAs. It indicates that the microfabricated reactor is useful for enzymatic reactions including complicated ones like cell-free translation. We also discuss the possibility of microsystems as advanced experimental tools for not only cell-free translation but also other various biochemical and biological research fields.

Notes: Abstract Cytochrome P450rm was previously isolated from the basidiomycete yeast Rhodotorula minuta as a bifunctional enzyme with isobutene-forming and benzoate 4-hydroxylase activities. We cloned the gene and corresponding cDNA for P450rm in order to characterize the enzyme in the context of fungal phylogeny and physiology. From the cDNA sequence, P450rm was deduced to have 527 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 59 136. P450rm shared 48% amino acid sequence identity with CYP53A1 from Aspergillus niger, indicating that the gene belongs to a novel subfamily of CYP53, CYP53B. However, the organization of the P450rm gene, which has eight exons and seven introns, differed completely to that of CYP53A1. Northern analysis demonstrated that the level of P450rm mRNA expression increased when L-phenylalanine was used as sole carbon source. These results suggest that P450rm has been well conserved during the evolution of fungi as a benzoate 4-hydroxylase in the dissimilation pathway starting from L-phenylalanine

Notes: Abstract We report a case of a 62-year-old female patient with Sjögren syndrome (SS) who developed multiple myeloma (MM) of the IgA κ-type. In 1986, the patient was admitted to our hospital with a facial rash, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and xerostomia. She was diagnosed as having discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and SS. She was treated with bromhexine hydrochloride for SS and with topical fluorinated steroid for DLE. In 1992, she developed compression fractures of the lumbar vertebrae and was readmitted to our hospital. DLE was not recognized. Laboratory findings revealed IgA 2046 mg/dl, IgG 529 mg/dl, and IgM 21 mg/dl. Anti-SS-A antibody was 1 : 32 and anti-SS-B antibody was 1 : 2. M protein of IgA κ was demonstrated by immunoelectrophoresis. Aspiration biopsy of the bone marrow revealed 20.2% plasma cells. A bone scintigram demonstrated many hot spots at the cervical and lumbar vertebrae. She was diagnosed as having SS and MM of the IgA κ-type. After chemotherapy for MM, the percentage of plasma cells in the bone marrow and the concentration of serum IgA decreased to 6.2% and 532 mg/dl, respectively. SS is frequently associated with benign monoclonal gammopathy or lymphoproliferative disorders, especially Waldenström's macroglobulinemia or malignant lymphoma. Although benign monoclonal gammopathy has frequently been observed in patients with SS, SS associated with MM is extremely rare.

Notes: Abstract. We have studied inclusive muon events using all the data collected by the TOPAZ detector at $\sqrt{s}=58$ GeV with an integrated luminosity of 273pb $^{-1}$ . From 1328 inclusive muon events, we measured the ratio $R_{q\bar{q}}$ of the cross section for $q\bar{q}$ production to the total hadronic cross section and forward-backward asymmetry $A_{FB}^{q}$ for b and c quarks. The obtained results are $R_{b\bar{b}}=0.13\pm0.02(stat)\pm0.01(syst)$ , $R_{c\bar c}=0.36\pm0.05(stat)\pm0.05(syst)$ , $A_{FB}^{b}=-0.20\pm0.16(stat)\pm0.01(syst)$ and $A_{FB}^ c=-0.17\pm0.14(stat)\pm0.02(syst)$ , in fair agreement with a prediction of the standard model.

Notes: Abstract The Sr(Ga0.5Ta0.5)O3-based perovskites with O2- and/or Sr2+ vacancies were formed by changing the A-site and/or B-site cation ratios. The Sr-deficient perovskites with a limited composition of Sr0.86(Ga0.36Ta0.64)O3 could be obtained, whereas oxygen vacancies were hardly created. The B′-site Ga3+ cation could be replaced with large Sc3+, In3+, Y3+, Nd3+ and La3+. The crystal symmetry of the complex perovskites changed from cubic (B′=Ga3+, Sc3+, In3+) to tetragonal (B′=La3+) through rhombohedral (B′=Y3+, Nd3+). The dielectric permittivities of these ceramics indicated no distinct dependence on the B′-site cation species. The temperature coefficient of permittivity might be associated with the symmetry change of the perovskite phases. Higher microwave Qf values, 〉Qf=38 000 GHz, were obtained for our complex perovskite ceramics, except with B′=La3+.
