Notes: A B-cell subset with Fc receptors for IgA (Bα cells) has been observed in human peripheral blood. To investigate aberrations of B cells in a diseased state, the percentages of Bα cells were enumerated in peripheral blood from patients with IgA nephropathy, which is characterized by preponderant deposition of IgA-dominant immune complexes in the glomerular mesangial area. The present study showed a significant increase in Bα cells in peripheral blood from patients with IgA nephropathy but not in those with chronic proliferative glomerulo-nephritis without mesangial IgA deposition. Most FcαR-bearing cells were observed in surface IgA bearing lymphocytes. No linear correlation was observed between the levels of serum IgA and the percentages of Bα cells. The addition of aggregated IgA to cultures did not induce FcαR-bearing B cells in vitro. It is postulated that Bα cells might have some pathogenetic role in the development of IgA nephropathy and that some antigenic stimuli might play a role in the increase of peripheral blood Bα cells in patients with IgA nephropathy.

Notes: A male infant with partial DiGeorge syndrome responded to weekly administration of levamisole (2.5 mg/kg of body weight) with an increase of circulating E-rosette-forming T cells. Thymic hormone activity in plasma appeared to be elevated to a near-normal level of 11.6 ng thymopoietin equivalent/ml after levamisole administration. The in vitro incubation studies indicated that levamisole by itself had no E-rosette-promoting ability, but a dialysable and relatively heat-stable plasma factor induced by levamisole both in the patient and in heallhy individuals had E-rosette-promoting activity for the patient's lymphocytes. Such a plasma factor, however, could not be induced in all four thymectomized myasthenic subjects examined, suggesting a thymus-dependent nature of the plasma factor. These results suggest that levamisole might mediate an increased secretion of humoral factor(s) with E-rosette-promoting activity, even from such a rudimentary thymus as in the partial DiGeorge syndrome.

Notes: Background : It has been reported that inhibitors of gastric acid secretion prevent bleeding after endoscopic mucosal resection for mucosal gastric neoplasm. However, uncertain whether an histamine2-receptor antagonist or proton-pump inhibitor is more effective.Aim : To evaluate prospectively the effectiveness of famotidine or omeprazole for ulcer management after endoscopic mucosal resection. Methods : From July 2003 to October 2004, 57 patients were randomly assigned to famotidine or omeprazole for the management of endoscopic mucosal resection. Both drugs were given intravenously for the first 2 days, thereafter by mouth. The bleeding rates after endoscopic mucosal resection, the effects on the healing of endoscopic mucosal resection-induced ulceration, and cost-benefits were compared. Results : Twenty-eight patients received famotidine and 29 received omeprazole. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in patient characteristics. The bleeding rates after endoscopic mucosal resection were not significantly different (18% vs. 14%) between the groups. Similarly, no differences were seen in the size of the endoscopic mucosal resection-induced ulceration at 1, 30 and 60 days after resection between groups. The total costs of anti-secretory agents demonstrated a significant cost-benefit to those treated with famotidine (10 420 yen vs. 17 782 yen). Conclusions : Famotidine is suggested as a better alternative to omeprazole for the management of endoscopic mucosal resection, as it showed a clear cost-benefit, and the healing results after endoscopic mucosal resection were similar for the two treatment strategies.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of a solid electrolyte cell Cu,X/X/Cu1.75Se (X = Rb4Cu16I7Cl13) has been examined. The open circuit voltage was 0.2680 V at 25° C. The cell yielded a current of several microamperes at ambient temperature. Some charge-discharge cycles were possible. The failure of the cell was ascribed to the anode, owing to a decrease of the activity of metallic copper as well as a low rate of the charge transfer reaction, copper/copper ion.

Notes: Influence of applied tensile and bending strains on the local and overall transport criticalcurrent Ic and n-value at 77 K of multifilamentary Bi2223-composite superconductor was studied, where the n-value refers to the sharpness of the transition from super- to normal conducting state.Under both tensile and bending strains, the damage such as transverse and longitudinal cracking ofthe Bi2223 filaments and interfacial debonding between the filament and silver progressed. Theextent of damage and accordingly the critical current was different among the local portions. Therelation of the local current and n-value to overall ones was analyzed with a voltage summationmodel, with which the experimental result was described well. Further analysis revealed that thedistribution of local critical current could be described by the Weibull distribution function andn-value could be expressed as a function of critical current. Based on these results, a Monte Carlosimulation was carried out to predict the overall critical current from the distribution of local criticalcurrent, with which the experimental results could be described

Notes: Abstract It is known that the deformations of the electronic charge density induced by lattice displacements play an important role in lattice dynamics. The multipole expansion of these deformations around the positions of both the cation and the anion leads to a rather general type of deformable shell model. This cluster deformation model can be applied not only to ionic crystals but also to a large variety of other materials like mixed-valence compounds. Taking TiN as an example, it is shown that the model is able to describe the very pronounced phonon anomalies in superconducting transitionmetal compounds and to reproduce the measured phonon dispersion curves within the experimental errors.

Notes: Abstract The reliability of the Japanese public telephone facilities to transmit electrocardiograms (e.c.g.) for computer interpretation was assessed. The International Business Machine's (IBM) e.c.g. computer program by Bonner was used. No appreciable distortion of e.c.g. was observed following repeated transmission from hospitals separated by 1000 km. Thirty-four normal and 66 abnormal e.c.g.s. were transmitted twice. Identical results were observed in 97% of normals and 92% of abnormals. Following these fundamental experiments, 1236 patients' e.c.g.s. were transmitted for computer intepretation. The study showed that 98·6% (1219 cases) were technically satisfactory and 1·4% (17 cases) were not. The 17 unsatisfactory cases were classified into ten unreceivable data formats, six inconsistent measurements and one unacceptable noise level. The authors concluded that the Japanese public telephone facilities were acceptable for the transmission of e.c.g.s. for computer interpretation.

Notes: Deformation mechanism of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fiber during axial compression was studied. PPTA fibers were embedded in resin and axialy compressed in a tensile machine. PPTA fibers were then taken out from resin at various stages of compression. Kink band formation was examined by means of polarizing microscopy, X-ray diffraction (WAXD), electron diffraction (ED), and electron microscopy. WAXD pattern of seriously compressed PPTA fiber shows that (200) reflection spots and arcs appear on the equator and meridian respectively. On the other hand, (110) reflection spots are confined to the equator. PPTA fiber could be splitted tangentially and radially into two kinds of thin fibrillar fragments (I and II) which reveal two distinct types of kink band and ED pattern. In fragment I obtained by tangential splitting, kink bands are formed at about 55° with respect to fibril axis, whereas in fragment II obtained by radial splitting kink bands are formed perpendicular to the fibril axis. These results were confirmed by ED studies. It was assumed that slip of (200) planes containing hydrogen bonded sheets as well as intermicrofibril slip plays an important role in the deformation of PPTA fiber during axial compression.
