Notes: Aims:  To examine whether or not the tight junction-associated transmembrane protein occludin is expressed in rosette or gland-like structures in human rectal carcinoid tumours. The tight junction is crucial for the formation and maintenance of organized tubular structures in glandular epithelia. Previous studies have reported the presence of glandular structures in carcinoid tumours, though they are not believed to arise from glandular epithelium. Methods and results:  The expression profiles of occludin in 40 carcinoid tumours were examined immunohistochemically, using an anti-occludin monoclonal antibody. In eight (20%) samples of typical carcinoid tumours, a small number of rosette-like tubular structures outlined by occludin were detected. Conclusions:  Tight junction-associated molecules, including occludin, are thought to be one of the most characteristic structural markers of polarized glandular structures. The results of the present study provide supportive evidence that carcinoid tumour cells are capable of glandular differentiation.

Notes: Abstract —We constructed a three-dimensional finite element model to simulate coseismic and postseismic displacement and stress fields associated with the 1993 Kushiro-oki earthquake, which was a very large intermediate-depth earthquake that occurred within the subducted Pacific plate at a depth of 107 km beneath the southeastern part of Hokkaido, Japan. Taking the configuration of the subducted Pacific plate into account, we constructed a realistic model with lateral heterogeneity of viscoelastic structure. We assigned a variable slip distribution to the fault plane, which was obtained from inversion analysis of near-field seismic waveforms. The result shows that elastic deformation associated with the faulting reflects the assigned inhomogeneous slip distribution on the fault plane near the fault region, while it does not reflect the distribution on the free surface of the model. The calculated postseismic deformation does not reflect the slip distribution, but shows symmetric spatial patterns concerning the dipping direction of the fault both near the fault region and on the model surface. For the next 20 years following the earthquake, the amount of the calculated deformation is a fraction of the coseismic deformation. The calculated coeseismic deformation is large just above and below the fault plane, reaching 1 m, while the postseismic deformation is dominant near the upper and lower material boundaries between the subducted plate and the surrounding asthenosphere. The spatial distribution of maximum shear stress near the fault plane corresponds to the assigned slip distribution, amounting to 32 MPa. The directions of principal stress-change axes represent reverse fault type in the SSE region of the fault, whereas normal fault type is dominant in the NNW region with the exception of some asymmetrical spatial patterns of the principal stress-change axes on the fault due to the inhomogeneous slip distribution. Time variations both in the amount and the directions of stresses are minor, suggesting that the coseismic state of the stress would remain unchanged for two decades after the event.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) at risk of developing neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) with age-related changes observable on MRI of the brain. However, although the usefulness of MR imaging in NCM is well known, age-related changes on MRI have rarely been reported. The prevalence of positive MRI findings and prognosis in GCMN accompanied by epilepsy and/or mental retardation awaits clarification. This case report may suggest the importance of serial brain MRI in cases of GCMN in assessing the risk of NCM.

Notes: Summary The influence of hypoxia on hepatic mitochondrial function and energy status was studied in normal and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced cirrhotic rats. Under hypoxemia of 50 mm Hg-PaO2, hepatic energy status was suppressed both in normal and cirrhotic rats. After the reversal of hypoxia, it was completely restored in normal rats concomitant with a rapid elevation of hepatic mitochondrial redox state (overshoot phenomenon) and increase in the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylative activity. By contrast, in cirrhotic rats, such an enhancement of mitochondrial function was not observed. It was clarified that cirrhotic liver mitochondria have little capacity to respond to the hypoxic stress. A lower resistance to hypoxic episode in cirrhotics might be attributable to the absence of mitochondrial enhancement which is a compensatory mechanism for the deranged energy metabolism of the liver.

Notes: A compact superconducting storage ring (0.575 GeV and 300 mA) with a racetrack microtron injection system was installed at Ritsumeikan University and has been operated successfully since April 1996. As the radius of the circular electron orbit is small (0.5 m), it is possible to use a radiation beam of relatively high photon flux at a short distance from the source point. Beamlines have been constructed including those for XAFS, soft X-ray spectroscopy, VUV spectroscopy, fluorescent X-ray analysis, soft X-ray microscopy, X-ray diffraction/scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy; the photoelectron spectrometer is combined with an ion-beam-scattering spectrometer to obtain information both on the electronic states and on the atomic arrangements of a solid surface. In addition there are two beamlines, one for LIGA exposure and the other for synchrotron radiation ablation, which are devoted to producing new devices and materials. The synchrotron radiation facility is open not only to users in the University but also to researchers in industry, governmental institutions and other universities.

Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: Dehydrocurdione, a sesquiterpene isolated from zedoary, was tested for in vivo and in vitro antiinflammatory actions.¶Materials: Analgesic effect was tested in ICR mice by the acetic acid-induced writhing method. Antipyretic effect was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with baker's yeast. Antiinflammatory activities were tested in Wistar rats with carrageenan-induced paw edema and adjuvant-induced chronic arthritis. In vitro analyses included the capabilities to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity, and to scavenge free radicals as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).¶Results: Oral administration of dehydrocurdione (40 to 200 mg/kg) mitigated the writhing reflex induced by acetic acid and the fever elicited by baker's yeast. A higher dose (200 mg/kg) of dehydrocurdione was required to inhibit the carrageenan-induced paw edema. Oral administration of dehydrocurdione at 120 mg/kg/day for 12 days significantly reduced chronic adjuvant arthritis. Unlike indomethacin (IC50: 0.1 μM), dehydrocurdione showed minimal cyclooxygenase inhibition. However, dehydrocurdione (100 μM to 5 mM) significantly reduced free radical formation from hydrogen peroxide and ferrous iron determined by EPR spectrometry using 5,5′-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-N-oxide as a spin trap agent.¶Conclusion: In addition to the well-known effect of zedoary as a stomachic, dehydrocurdione, the major component of Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe has antiinflammatory potency related to its antioxidant effect.

Notes: Abstract The leaching behaviours of hot-pressed Si3N4 ceramics containing Y2O3, Al2O3 and AIN as additives and hot isostatically pressed Si3N4 without additives were studied in 0.1 to 10 M HF aqueous solutions at 50 to 80° C. Silicon and aluminium ions were dissolved into the HF solutions, but yttrium ion did not dissolve at all and formed insoluble YF3. The dissolution of silicon and aluminium ions was controlled by the surface chemical reaction and the apparent activation energies were 70.5 to 87.6 kJ mol−1, respectively. The corrosion rate increased with increasing degree of crystallization of the grain boundary phases. The corrosion resulted in roughness of the surface and degradation of the fracture strength. Si3N4 ceramics containing an amorphous phase at the grain boundaries showed the most excellent resistance to corrosion with HF solution, and kept a fracture strength of above 400 M Pa even after leaching 40% of the silicon ions.

Notes: Abstract The carrier distribution among the inequivalent CuO 2 planes in multilayer cuprates is investigated by 63 Cu Knight shift measurement with varying the carrier concentration, δ and the number of CuO 2 plane in a unit cell, n. We found that 70 (60)% of total carriers are doped selectively into two outer CuO 2 planes in n = 3 (4). This indicates resultantly that the inhomogeneity of carrier distribution increases with increasing δ and n in multilayer cuprates.
