    Notes: Manufacturing defects in the near-surface region of 2¼% Cr 1% Mo castings were investigated in a joint research programme. After ultrasonic testing and X-ray inspection, large push-pull specimens (cross section 1000 mm2) were taken from castings in regions with indications of defects and tested under fully reversed loading in the elastic and elastic plastic region up to predetermined levels of defect growth. The defects are micropores, pin holes, slag and oxide layers or inclusions, hot tears and small micro cracks in welds.The initiation of crack growth was analysed by two methods, namely (a) the local strain concept with idealization of defects as three-dimensional elliptical notches and (b) by the fracture mechanics concept with idealization of defects as two-dimensional elliptical cracks. The main results can be summarized as follows:1. The local strain concept describes the crack initiation potential of the defects more accurately than the fracture mechanics concept.2. Interpretation of casting defects as cracks produces very conservative estimates in many cases.3. Analytical evaluation of crack growth behaviour using the fracture mechanics approach for defects experiencing crack growth of at least 1 mm is much more accurate than when defects having a smaller extent of crack growth are included in the analysis.Additional evaluations of crack growth behaviour of hot tears by fracture mechanics show that crack growth starting from open and partially closed hot tears must be subjected to a larger number of cycles than normal fatigue cracks of sound material. Partially closed hot tears in the vicinity of the crack front additionally delay crack propagation.

    Notes: Summary The cutaneous infiltrate in mycosis fungoides (MF) is predominantly composed of T4-positive T-cells. Attempts to distinguish the early stages of this condition from benign inflammatory infiltrates using anti-T3, T4 and other T-cell-associated antibodies have hitherto been unsucessful. Recently a monoclonal antibody BE 2 has been described as selectively reacting against leukemic cells in patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. To investigate whether the BE 2 antigen is differentially expressed in different stages of MF and benign dermatoses, thus facilitating diagnosis, especially of early MF, the reactivity of monoclonal antibody BE 2 against cutaneous infiltrates from such conditions was assessed. In the early stages of MF only a small number of reactive cells was present. In benign inflammatory infiltrates, especially in those that clinically and histologically were hardly distinguishable from early MF, BE 2 reactivity was essentially the same as in eczematous-stage MF. Lesions from plaque and tumor stage MF contained large numbers of BE 2-reactive cells. Our results indicate that expression of BE 2 is associated with the stage of a given MF lesion and is essentially identical in early MF and eczematous lesions with a similar histopathological appearance.

    Notes: Summary In an open prospective pilot trial, we tested the effect of recombinant interferon alpha-2a (rIFN alpha-2a) on thrombocytosis in myeloproliferative disorders (MPD). Since October 1986, 13 patients with MPD (4 with chronic granulocytic leukemia, 4 with polycythemia vera, 3 with essential thrombocythemia and 2 with myeloid metaplasia) were treated with rIFN alpha-2a. Platelet counts decreased in all treated patients within 2 to 10 weeks from a median value of 1,050×109/l (range 610−1,940×109/l) to 340×109/l (range 230−495×109/l). The response was dose-dependent. In 11 patients we observed a simultaneous reduction of the white blood cell count. Six patients still continue the IFN alpha-2a therapy. In 7 treatment was discontinued, because of chronic side effects in 3, and because of noncompliance in one. In these patients, thrombocytosis recurred after discontinuation of the therapy. These results show that rIFN alpha-2a is effective in controlling thrombocytosis in MPD. However, the long-term benefit of interferon in these disorders remains to be established.

    Notes: Abstract The response of Superheated Superconducting Granule (SSG) devices to nuclear recoils has been explored by irradiating SSG detectors with a 70MeV neutron beam. In the past we have tested Al SSG and more recently, measurements have been performed with Sn and Zn detectors. The aim of the experiments was to test the sensitivity of SSG detectors to recoil energies down to a few keV. In this paper, the preliminary results of the neutron irradiation of a SSG detector made of Sn granules 15–20µm in diameter will be discussed. For the first time, recoil energy thresholds of ∼1keV have been measured.

    Notes: Abstract We report on improvements of the dc-SQUID instrumentation developed to study superheating-supercooling transitions of thin-film indium dots. In previous measurements on ordered arrays of dots with diameters larger than 100µm the flip signal of an individual dot in perpendicular magnetic field has been detected. In order to use these dots as superheated superconducting detectors it is necessary to reduce the dot diameter to lower the energy threshold and to avoid intermediate states. For these reasons, our effort has been to develop small and thick dots with diameter down to10 µm and thickness up to3.5 µm. At the same time the coupling with the dc-SQUID readout was improved using a thin-film niobium pickup coil integrated on the same chip containing the dots. Phase transitions of individual dots were observed. The superheating phase transition spread in temperature of the samples was about 0.15 %.

    Notes: Abstract The presented results are part of a feasibility study of superheated superconducting microstructure detectors. The microstructures (dots) were fabricated using thin film patterning techniques with diameters ranging from50µm up to500µm and thickness of1µm. We used arrays and single dots to study the dynamics of the superheating and supercooling phase transitions in a magnetic field parallel to the dot surface. The phase transitions were produced by either varying the applied magnetic field strength at a constant temperature or changing the bath temperature at a constant field. Preliminary results on the dynamics of the phase transitions of arrays and single indium dots will be reported.

    Notes: Abstract The presented results are part of a feasibility study of a Superheated Superconducting Granule (SSG) device for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) detection. The sensitivity of SSG to nuclear recoils has been explored irradiating SSG detectors with a 70MeV neutron beam proving that energy thresholds of ∼1keV can be reached in 30µm Zn and 17µm Sn granules. The successful irradiation experiments with neutrons encouraged us to plan a prototype SSG dark matter detector. The status of the project will be presented and the expected counting rate for spin-independent WIMP interactions in SSG detectors will be discussed.

    Notes: Abstract During the entire period of research from 1971 to 1982 Oscillatoria agardhii Gomont was overwhelmingly present in the Wolderwijd. Six years of measurements of primary production has pointed out that the gross production per day firstly is related to temperature and secondly to irradiation. However, the production per year is neither related to temperature nor to irradiation. In a cold summer gross production is as high as in a warm summer due to higher production in the lower part of the euphotic zone. In the discussion attention is focused on production characteristics and light climate in relation to the morphometry of the lake. Up to an average depth of 2.5 m blooming of O. agardhii occurs easily, whilst light saturated production achieves its maximum between 2.0 and 2.5 m depth. Increasing depth leads to photo-inhibition in the upper layers followed by lowering of light saturated production. Only special circumstances such as days with microstratification allow growth, resulting then in a monoculture of the alga.
