    Notes: We present a new doping technique using an ion shower doping system with a bucket ion source. Phosphorus atoms were implanted in polycrystalline silicon from room temperature to 300 °C. Sheet resistances were significantly reduced by raising the implantation temperature. With a crystal fraction of 85%, sheet resistance was 5×102 S−1/(D'Alembertian) as implanted. These effects were not due to pure thermal annealing by ion beam heating. A significant improvement was found in sheet resistance as a result of averaging the impurity profile by radiation enhanced diffusion and low temperature recrystallization of the implanted region by collision of atoms.

    Notes: We tested the Rothamsted Carbon Model (RothC) against three long-term (27–28 years) experimental sites on Thai upland soils in order to see how this widely used ‘temperate’ soil carbon turnover model performed in a typical farming region in the tropics. We were able to verify – over a much longer period than had been examined in previous studies – that RothC performs well in a tropical region in plots used for continuous cropping experiments of maize and cassava without organic matter application. However, the model overestimated soil organic carbon (SOC) in some plots to which large amounts of organic matter (rice straw or cassava stalks) were applied. This overestimate could not be attributed to errors in estimating either the amount of C input to the soil or the ratio of decomposable plant materials to resistant plant materials entering the soil. Among many factors affecting SOC dynamics (e.g. weather conditions, soil characteristics, etc.), which are different in tropical regions from temperate regions, we conclude that the activity of soil fauna might be a major factor which makes the performance of RothC worse where much organic matter was applied. We suggest that care should be taken when applying RothC to tropical soils with large amounts of added organic matter.

    Notes: Using an ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) sputtering system, we could grow two new methods of polycrystalline silicon films. The one is as-deposited polycrystalline silicon on glass at substrate temperatures under 500 °C. The other is solid-phase-crystallization by thermal annealing of as-deposited amorphous silicon films in a UHV. As-deposited polycrystalline silicon films were oriented to (220) and grain sizes were determined from half-width of x-ray diffraction to be about 40 nm. From the deposition temperature dependence of the x-ray diffraction peak intensity, the activation energy of the crystalline growth was calculated to be about 0.6 eV. Hydrogen atoms in the sputtering gas lower the reproducibility of as-deposited poly-Si. Polycrystalline silicon films produced by thermal annealing of as-deposited amorphous silicon films at 550 °C in UHV have a (111) orientation. Field-effect mobilities of the as-deposited polycrystalline silicon film and the polycrystalline silicon film by UHV thermal annealing were 5 and 18 cm2/V s, respectively. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The optical grating memory effect in polysilane film is investigated. A refractive index grating is formed within a few minutes by using visible light near room temperature. The grating formation time is dominated by the peak intensity of the pumping beams, and its dependence on the wavelength of the pumping beams corresponds to the two-photon absorption spectrum. The grating formation mechanism is explained as the result of the chain scission induced by two-photon absorption.

    Notes: Organic thin films of copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) and aluminum tris-8-hydroxyquinline (Alq3) were fabricated via KrF laser ablation. In spite of poor crystallinity exhibited in the reconstructed organic films, the CuPc film still works as a hole-transport layer in electroluminescence cells based on the CuPc and Alq3 layers. Electroluminescence at ∼500 nm was obtained with a low initiation voltage of ∼12 V. There is no significant difference in electroluminescence performance for devices fabricated via laser ablation and thermal evaporation. Emission at ∼600 nm caused by energy transfer from Alq3 to 4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) is also observed from a DCM-doped Alq3 emission layer. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigated the effect of hydrogen ion shower doping on polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors (p-Si TFTs). Hydrogen atoms were introduced to the channel region of p-Si TFTs by PH3/H2 ion shower doping of the source/drain contact. Hydrogen concentration in the channel region can be controlled by altering the gate metal thickness. Hydrogen atoms affect the TFT's threshold voltage shifts until it becomes negative, in n-type TFTs. The threshold voltage shift depends on the hydrogen content of the channel region in p-Si TFTs. This is explained by the existence of Si−3 trap states in the grain boundaries. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We used Northern blot analysis in order to investigate the ontogeny of the murine joining (J)-chain gene. No J-chain expression was detected in embryonic tissues, including liver, spleen and intestine, but an expression of µ heavy chain was detected in foetal liver at day 17. J-chain expression was detected in the spleen at day 9 and in the intestine at day 15 after birth. Western blot analysis was carried out in order to compare the protein levels of J and µ heavy chains in serum from day 8 to day 24 after birth, using antihuman J chain and antimouse µ chain antibodies. Although µ chain protein could be detected in serum from day 8, J-chain protein was detectable only at day 24. These results suggest that the expression of J chain is a later event than the µ chain in the mouse, which thus differs in embryogenesis from humans.

    Notes: Using a recombinant vaccinia virus containing the T7 RNA polymerase, we have established a system for the transient expression of human polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) in baby hamster kidney cells, a baby hamster-derived fibroblastic cell line. This transfection system resulted in the successful expression of pIgR in these cells, and Western blot analysis showed that human pIgR was expressed as two different molecular weight forms of 92 and 107 kDa. Treatment with endoglycosidase H showed that the difference between these two forms was due to the glycosylation status of the protein. In order to examine the functional role of glycosylation, we treated the transfected cells with tunicamycin, which prevents a core glycosylation step in the endoplasmic reticulum. Non-glycosylated pIgR was released into the culture medium of the transfected cells, albeit with extremely low efficiency. Taking these results together, we conclude that the glycosylation of pIgR may play a positive role in the efficient transport or release of free pIgR.
