Notes: We report room temperature delamination of chemically vapor deposited diamond films on a Si substrate due to 1.5 MeV He+ ion bombardment. The delamination of films has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. The threshold fluence at which the delamination takes place has been determined in situ by monitoring the hydrogen signal with the help of elastic recoil detection analysis. Micro Raman measurements show the presence of residual stress (1.19 GPa) in the as-prepared films and its relaxation at the peripheri of the delaminated regions. It is proposed that enhancement of the residual stress during He+ ion bombardment leads to stress saturation conditions which result in the delamination of the brittle diamond films from the film/substrate interface. These findings lead to the possibility of creating ion-beam induced channels in diamond films for device isolation by suitable choice of film/substrate combination. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ballistic electron emission spectroscopy (BEES) has been used to determine the conduction-band offset between a 10-nm-thick Al0.12In0.22Ga0.66As (Q) strained layer and a ternary Al0.2Ga0.8As (T) barrier located beneath the surface. A three-sample process was used so that the known, reproducible Au/GaAs Schottky barrier would be the top layer of all measured structures. BEES thresholds obtained for Au/GaAs, Au/GaAs/Q, and Au/GaAs/Q/T were 0.96±0.02, 0.98±0.04, and 1.08±0.04 meV yielding offsets of ∼20 meV for GaAs/Q and ∼100 meV for Q/T. Under the affect of a high-temperature anneal, the Q/T offset was reduced to ∼40 meV. In addition, a structure employing solely Au/GaAs/AlGaAs was used to study transitivity for the Q/T material system. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ballistic electron emission spectroscopy (BEES) has been used to study both the conduction and valence band offsets between InAs and AlAsSb. With the addition of As to AlSb, the conduction band offset between it and InAs has been found to decrease despite the increase in the band gap. The resulting increase in the valence band causes the InAs/Al(As, Sb) band lineup to change from a staggered (type II) to a straddling (type I). Both room-temperature and low-temperature (77 K) BEES spectra have been taken to determine the band offsets. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) has been used to determine the Fermi-level pinning position at the Au/InAs interface. Using BEEM's three-terminal capabilities, collector current–voltage scans were taken on Au/InAs/AlSb samples. The extracted BEEM threshold values (1.22 eV) correspond to the highest energy band position in the conduction band at the InAs/AlSb interface. By subtracting the InAs/AlSb conduction-band offset (1.35 eV), an estimate of the Au Fermi-level position on InAs is obtained (0.13 eV). © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report ballistic-electron-emission microscopy (BEEM) imaging and spatially resolved spectroscopy of InxGa1−xAs/GaAs misfit dislocations 800 A(ring) below the surface. Majority-carrier scattering by a fraction of misfit dislocations was seen to locally reduce the BEEM current and to give logarithmic spatial dependence, which suggests charging of the dislocation cores. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Gastric emptying of orange-flavoured glucose (group I), low-fat milk (group II) and breast milk (group III) was evaluated in 45 ASA grade I children of ≤ 5 years of age by using real-time ultrasonography and residual gastric volume and pH was then measured. In 15 more children, residual gastric volume and pH was measured after a midnight fast (group IV). Mean (SD) gastric emptying time in group I was 1.53 (0.25) h (range 1.00–1.75), group II 2.32 (0.31) h (range 1.75–2.75) and group III 2.43 (0.27) h (range 2.00–2.75). According to Robert and Shirley's criteria, no children of group I and II were found to be ‘at risk’ at 2 h and 3 h, respectively, but 13.3% of group III children were labelled as ‘at risk’ at 3 h. The incidence of ‘at risk’ children in group IV was 33.3%. It was concluded that 3% fat milk or 17.5% glucose in a volume of 10 ml.kg−1 (maximum volume of 100 ml) can be given in children safely 3 h and 2 h, respectively, before anaesthesia. More real-time studies are required on breast milk to establish guidelines for its potential use as a pre-operative feed 3 h before anaesthesia.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of coaxial approach in difficult-to-cross lesions in patients with failed percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty by conventional over-the-wire exchange technique. Twelve stenoses in 10 patients (six women and four men; age range 19 ± 7 years) with uncontrolled hypertension were treated by this method. The stenosis was caused by nonspecific aortoarteritis in 8 patients and fibromuscular dysplasia in 2 patients. It was ostial in seven and post-ostial in five vessels. Conventional exchange technique was unsuccessful in all of them. All procedures were done by femoral route. Technical success was seen in 11 (92 %), without complication. The stenosis improved from 90 ± 2.1 % (range 80–100 %) to 6 ± 7 % (range 0–20 %), blood pressure decreased from 198 ± 12.3 mm Hg (range 180–220 mm Hg)/130 ± 6.7 mm Hg (range 120–140 mm Hg) to 119 ± 5.7 mm Hg (range 110–130 mm Hg)/83 ± 3.9 mm Hg (range 80–90 mm Hg), and number of drug treatments for hypertension fell from 3.6 ± 0.52 (range 3–4) to 1 ± 0.94 (range 0–3; p 〈 0.01). Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty resulted in “cure” in 3 patients and “improvement” in 7 patients. Follow-up period was 3–21 months (mean 6.4 months). No restenosis was detected. Coaxial approach is safe and effective in treating difficult-to-cross lesions in which renal angioplasty by conventional exchange technique is unsuccessful.

Notes: Summary The surface tension of the solutions of lithium salts of fatty acids in the mixtures of water and butanol-I of varying composition has been studied. It has been suggested that the change in the nature of the micelles takes place at about 50% butanol-I concentration. Up to 50% butanol-I concentration hydrophilic oleomicelles are formed but above 50% butanol-I concentration lipophilic hydromicelles exist. A study of the effect of the concentration of the different soaps on the surface tension suggests that the surface tension of the solutions increases with the increase in the soap concentration. It has also been observed that the surface tension of the soap solutions increases with the increase in the number of carbon atoms in the soap.
