Notes: By means of x-ray phase analysis, it is shown that all the interstitial Sm2(Fe1−xAlx)17Ny nitrides and the parent compounds crystallize in Th2Zn17-type structure for x≤0.4. The lattice constants of the parent compounds increase linearly with Al concentration. The introduction of nitrogen leads to a further increase in lattice constants, but the amplitude of the increase decreases with increasing Al concentration. The introduction of nitrogen leads to an increase of Curie temperature Tc . The composition dependence of Tc of the parent compounds exhibits a maximum, whereas Tc of the nitride decreases monotonously with increasing Al concentration from 750 K for x=0 to 313 K for x=0.4. The mean magnetic moments of iron ions in both nitrides and parents decrease monotonously with increasing Al concentration.

Notes: The semiclassical theory of ballistic electron transport in semiconductor microstructures provides a description of the quantum conductance fluctuations in terms of the classical distributions for the lengths and directed areas of the scattering trajectories. Because the classical dynamics differs for integrable (circular) and chaotic (stadium) scattering domains, experimental measurements of the conductance of these microstructures provide a unique probe of the quantum properties of classically regular and chaotic systems. To advance these theoretical and experimental studies we compare geometrical formulas for the classical distributions of lengths and areas with numerical simulations for microstructures examined in recent experiments, we assess the effects of lead size and placement, and we provide a critical analysis of the role of scattering "noise'' on the classical and semiclassical predictions. Finally, we present a detailed comparison of the semiclassical theory with recent experimental measurements of the conductance fluctuations in circular- and stadium-shaped microstructures.

Notes: The effect of electron beam irradiation on second harmonic generation of BaTiO3 thin films was studied. Enhanced second harmonic intensity was measured from BaTiO3 thin films irradiated by electron beams of 10, 15, and 25 keV using a scanning electron microscope. The enhancement of the second harmonic generations is attributed to the electron beam-induced poling of the film. The effectiveness of the electron beam irradiation on second harmonic generation enhancement is comparable to that of the corona poling of the film at room temperature. This electron beam induced poling technique offers a promising method for nonlinear optical device fabrication.

Notes: Second-harmonic generation of 1.064 μm incident light was measured on BaTiO3 thin films prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Upon corona poling of the film, the second-harmonic signal was significantly enhanced. The second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, d, of the poled film reaches ∼7.5 times that of the quartz. The enhanced second-harmonic generation shows a very slow decay at room temperature.

Notes: Polarized second harmonic generation measurements were performed on AlN films deposited on (100) sapphire substrates by the reactive rf sputtering technique. The bulk effective second order nonlinearity observed in these films is typically about 6×10−9 esu at 1.06 μm, several times larger than that of quartz or KTP. The tensorial properties of the nonlinearity are consistent with the crystal symmetry of AlN and the microcrystallinity of these films.

Notes: Abstract Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) at concentrations more than 1×10−8 M markedly suppressed the cell proliferation and release of soluble molecules of interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), CD4 (sCD4) and CD8 (sCD8) from phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated normal human mononuclear cells (MNC) in a dose-related manner. To further elucidate the subcellular mechanism of the inhibitory effect of PGE2 on PHA-stimulated MNC, intracellular concentration of glutathione (GSH) in PHA-stimulated MNC was sequentially measured from day 1 to day 3 by enzymic method. Furthermore, the effect of PGE2 on nuclear DNA including DNA strand breaks in alkali treatment and DNA fragmentation (apoptosis) of PHA-stimulated MNC were also measured. We found intracellular GSH levels were significantly decreased in the early stage of lymphocyte activation (day 1), but no evidence of increased DNA stand breaks or apoptotic process appeared in 3-day culture. In addition, butathione sulfoximine (a specific GSH inhibitor) and dibutyryl cyclic AMP also exhibited both proliferation inhibition and GSH-decreasing effect on PHA-stimulated MNC as well as PGE2. These results suggest that the immunosupressive effect of PGE2 is mediated by the decreased generation of intracellular GSH, but not by the increased DNA strand breaks or apoptotic mechanism in the cells.

Notes: Abstract In linear isotropic elasticity, cases exist where pure shear waves are possible even in bounded media; these have a nondispersive mode with propagation speed equal to that in an infinite medium. For these cases, consideration of a two-layer medium shows the existence of dispersion which vanishes only with equality of the propagation speeds. The present study uses the method of asymptotic expansions; a uniformly valid approximation is obtained to describe the speed and dispersive nature of these waves. The elegance of this approach is brought out by derivation of the basic result of this study viz., Jeffrey equation to describe the farfield structure of these waves.

Notes: Abstract The infrared absorption spectrum of singly ionized magnesium donor impurities in silicon has been measured. Due to better sample preparation and higher resolution of the instrument, the absorption spectrum obtained is much better than previous reports. Some new lines have been observed and identified. Besides the 2p± line, the 3p± line has also been observed for the first time to be a doublet indicating that the excited state np± splits into two states due to chemical splitting.

Notes: Abstract TheT c changes related to the microstructure as a function of annealing temperature for the BiSrCaCuO (BSCCO) film implanted with 170 keV P+ at two different doses were studied. The BSCCO films were prepared by d.c. sputtering on MgO substrates. For the film implanted at a dose of 5×1015 cm−2 post-implantation annealing at 600–800°C enabled theT cs of the film to be completely recovered. For the film implanted at a dose of 1.0×1017cm−2 theT cs were only partly recovered after 600°C annealing. On further annealing at 700°C the superconductivity of the film disappeared. TEM examination showed that significant amount of CaP, Ca3P2, and some unknown phases were formed. It is considered that the significant amounts of these phases formed during post-implantation annealing renders the recovery of the superconductivity of the P+-implanted BSCCO film difficult.
