Notes: In the Fock–Bargmann space, the complete harmonic-oscillator basis for the three-cluster system is constructed. The indices of the reduction U(6)&supuline;U(2)×U(3) are chosen as the quantum numbers. The Pauli-forbidden states are eliminated by the orthogonal transformation of basis functions. The basis states are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions and the spherical Wigner functions. Their simple form allows one to solve the problem of calculating the matrix elements of the microscopic Hamiltonian needed for the study of three-cluster systems within the algebraic version of RGM. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The addition of chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans (CSPGs), purified from the rat brain, to the culture medium of PC12D cells inhibited their proliferation and neurite outgrowth. Therefore, we investigated the effects of several extracellular components on the inhibitory actions of CSPGs on PC12D cells, as well as their immunocytochemical distribution in the rat embryo to determine whether the findings in vitro could be reproduced in vivo. Coating of the substratum with polylysine was necessary for the appearance of the inhibitory effects of brain CSPGs on PC12D cells. The additional pretreatment of polylysine-coated dishes with laminin or fibronectin promoted the outgrowth of neurites from PC12D cells. Laminin and fibronectin, but not collagen (types I and IV) and CELL-TAK (cell adhesion molecules), prevented the inhibitory effects of brain CSPGs in a concentration-dependent manner. Doses producing 50% reduction by laminin (or fibronectin) of the CSPG effects were 1.5 (or 25) μg/ml for neurite outgrowth and 2.2 (or 28) μg/ml for proliferation. The ratio of dish-attached CSPGs to laminin necessary for 50% reduction was about ∼50:l (wt/wt). Laminin from any source had the same effect. Brain CSPGs also obviously impeded the growth of fibres from dorsal root ganglion explants and primary cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons. Neurocan (a major CSPG in the brain)-like immunoreactivity was detected in the boundary caps and roof plate in the rat embryo at 13.5 days of gestation, when DRG neurons were extending their axons to the neural tube. The distributions of laminin and tenascin appeared, respectively, to be slightly and considerably different from that of neurocan. These results suggest that brain CSPGs can generate barriers to the growth of axons from the dorsal root ganglion and that the ratio of CSPGs to laminin may be important in regulating such growth.

Notes: Immunohistochemical identification of myoepithelial cells using α-smooth muscle actin provides little information about the nature of solid or quasi-solid portions of epithelial hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) because actin-rich myoepithelial cells are usually demonstrated only in the stromal–epithelial junction of both lesions. We studied the differential distribution of α-subunit (S100-α) and β-subunit (S100-β) of S100 protein in actin-negative areas of usual epithelial hyperplasia and DCIS by employing the streptavidin method with monospecific rabbit antibodies against each subunit. All usual epithelial hyperplasias (n=17) were composed of heterogeneous epithelial cell types; cells expressing S100-α and/or S100-β were intermingled with non-expressing cells, resulting in a mosaic-like pattern. On the contrary, DCIS (n=32) uniformly lacked immunoreactive S100-β; S100-α was diffusely expressed in 24 (68.8%) DCIS (three solid/comedo, 13 cribriform, four endocrine, one micropapillary, three papillary variants) and negative in the remaining eight (31.2%) DCIS (one cribriform, two micropapillary, four papillary and one apocrine variants). In conclusion, in contrast to usual epithelial hyperplasia that expresses both S100-α and S100-β in a heterogeneous pattern, DCIS can express only S100-α in a monotonous pattern, possibly signifying unidirectional differentiation toward secretory glandular epithelium.

Notes: The unit cell and space group of orthorhombic NaV6O11 (low-temperature form) are found by an X-ray single-crystal diffraction study at 300 K (hexagonal, P63/mmc), 100 K (hexagonal, P63mc) and 20 K (orthorhombic). The orthorhombic form (o) shows no superstructure and its unit cell is related to the hexagonal one (h): ao ∼ ah + bh, ao ∼ −ah + bh and co ∼ ch. Bijvoet-pair examination confirms that it crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cmc21. The hexagonal (P63mc)-orthorhombic (Cmc21) structural phase transition is proved to be of second order.

Notes: To determine the importance of silkworm moth allergens, we tested 267 patients with allergic rhinitis with CAP-RAST®, a new assay system for detecting specific IgE in sera. We used the following allergen sources: house-dust mite, Candida, Altemaria, cat dander, orchard grass, ragweed, mugwort, Japanese hops, Japanese cedar, Japanese cypress, cotton, silk, larval chironomid midge, adult chironomid midge, and silkworm moth. As expected, the highest positive rate of reaction, as determined by CAP-RAST, was 73.8% for Japanese cedar, followed by 53.2% for mite and 50.6% for Japanese cypress. Although the positive rate for silkworm moth was not as high as for cedar pollen, one-third of patients had specific IgE against silkworm moth. The positive rate of reaction to silkworm moth was much higher than that to chironomid. It was interesting to note that the patients reported had not been documented as having frequent contact with silkworm moth allergen. Correlations between silkworm moth and silk, and silkworm moth and chironomid midge were found to be significant (P 〈0.001). Silkworm moth allergen showed the third highest reaction rate in patients with severe symptoms. These results suggest that silkworm moth allergen should be considered to be important in patients with allergic rhinitis in Japan.

Notes: Abstract Fluorine containing-cyclohexadienes (FCHDs), 3,3,6,6,-tetrafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (1a), 1-chloro-3,3,6,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (3a) and 1-bromo-3,3,6,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (4a), were isolated in pure states with high yields (ca. 80%) by the preparative scale electrochemical fluorination of 1,4-difluorobenzene (1), 1-chloro-2,5-difluorobenzene (3) and 1-bromo-2,5-difluorobenzene (4), respectively, in Et4NF · mHF (Et = C2H5: m = 4.0, 4.45 and 4.7) at a platinum anode, followed by extraction and fractional distillation. The electrochemical fluorination of 1,2,4-trifluorobenzene (2) yielded both 1,3,3,6,6-pentafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (2a) and 2,5,5,6,6-pentafluoro-1,3-cyclohexadiene (2b) with high yield (ca. 90%). Some of (2a) was also isolated in a pure state by fractional distillation. Each substrate compound (1–4) was fluorinated to the corresponding FCHDs with an almost quantitative yield when 2.0–2.1 faraday (per mol of substrate) of electricity was passed.

Notes: Abstract The expression of two small stress proteins, αB crystallin and the 27-kDa heat shock protein (HSP27), was studied quantitatively and immunohistochemically in normal kidney and renal tumors in rats. Levels of αB crystallin in renal cell tumors tended to be higher than in normal kidney (P = 0.07), but with a wide range of values, whereas they were significantly lower in mesenchymal tumors (P 〈 0.0001). In contrast, HSP27 concentrations in both renal cell (mean ± SD: 1790 ± 940 ng/mg protein,n = 15) and mesenchymal (1260 ± 1080 ng/mg protein,n = 10) tumors were significantly higher than the normal kidney value (142 ± 30 ng/mg protein,n = 10,P 〈 0.0001). A positive correlation was found between αB crystallin and HSP27 levels limited to the renal cell tumor case (Pearson's correlation coefficient,r = 0.68,P 〈 0.01). Immunohistochemistry revealed the loops of Henle to be positive for αB crystallin, whereas HSP27 staining was positive in glomerular and interstitial vascular walls and epithelial cells of proximal and distal tubules. Positive immunostaining for αB crystallin was demonstrated in six of nine renal cell tumors (67%) studied and for HSP27 in all of the nine cases (100%).
